There were probably about 25 tents of vendors, with a variety of offerings such as juice, dip mixes, olive oils, hummus, cheeses, fresh produce, flowers, jams, pies, hot food such as Mediterranean and dumplings. We talked to the organizer, and one thing that surprised me was that he said he prefers to only have one vendor of each type at the market, mostly to ensure that each vendor makes money while there. I can understand this approach, but I felt for a farmer's market the fresh produce offerings were lacking. Given that there were only 1-2 produce vendors, the prices were set as they pleased and the breadth of produce was limited. Maybe this will improve as we get later in the growing season. The location is nice. The space is very green and has a playground for kids to play in. The market also offers a "toy library" when you can check out a toy to play with for the evening (hula hoop, bubbles, balls, etc.). There was a live performer the day we were there, and there were also picnic tables for us to sit at and enjoy our dumplings we bought at the market.

Usually I…read morego to the Bloomfield Saturday Market, but knew it would be too crazy up there during Little Italy Days. The Lawrenceville one is small and quiet, and very enjoyable. I did a quick lap around to see what was available. I needed fresh produce, and I found exactly what I was looking for. There was a good selection of heirloom tomatoes at a few of the vendors. The Harvest Valley Farms table is huge and they always have a good selection for a reasonable price. They also take credit cards which is helpful. I can't get all of my groceries here, but it is nice to get some local produce in the middle of the week.

Because I have every other Friday off, on the weeks I'm not working that day, I'll go to the one in Bloomfield instead. They have a decent selction of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses. Not all of it is organic though. Even so, although you might pay a little more than at Giant Eagle, the produce here is way better. I don't know--I guess fruit and veggies are always better when they have flavor. And of course, it's always fun schlepping home a shopping bag full of produce and my briefcase on the bus.

I went early in the season hoping to find lots of vegetable and plant vendors. Most of the market…read morewas premade or ready to eat food, only 2 vegetable vendors. The prices were high, like $8 dozen for eggs. I chose a small box of 4 apples the vendor said were honey crisp kept in their storage for winter ($5). Well, when I got home, one apple was a Pink Lady and I know that because it had a grocery store sticker on it and it wasn't an organic sticker, it began with the number 4 (organic numbers begin with a 9). I became a bit angry because it appeared that they were buying from a grocery store and selling for a markup. A very small bunch of green onions was $3. If you want barbecue ribs ((full rack $28) or delicious scones ($11), definitely go. But I don't think I'll be going back, unless it's for those scones.
