My family recently moved into the neighborhood. We saw a crane trimming a large tree one morning and drove around the neighborhood to look. When we realized it was through Patti's Swim School, we started talking about possibly enrolling our two young children. The gate was open. The wide driveway and parking area looked like the entrance to a business, and we didn't see anything at the entrance saying "Private Property," "No Trespassing," "Appointment Required" or "Enrolled Families Only." We stopped near the gate and began talking to the neighboring property owner. A man named Michael came outside, told us not to speak with her and ordered us to leave because we were trespassing. His tone and manner felt very aggressive and confrontational. The neighbor disagreed with him and said the area was a public or shared-access easement. We had no idea there was apparently some kind of dispute between them. I can't say who was legally right about the easement, and we weren't there to take sides. Michael told us to leave, so we left. I was very angry afterward, but our realtor told me Patti's a reasonable person and that I shouldn't judge the whole school based on one interaction with Michael. I thought that was fair. I waited a day to cool down and emailed Patti directly. I told her what happened and asked three basic questions: Who is Michael? Does he represent the school? Does she think the way he handled the situation was appropriate? She didn't answer any of them. Instead, Patti compared what we did to parking in someone's driveway and walking into their backyard. I don't think that's a fair comparison at all. We drove through the open gate of an operating business and stayed in what looked like its entrance and parking area. We didn't enter anyone's house or backyard. Of course Patti has the right to control access to her property. We left as soon as we were told to leave. But if nobody's able to enter without being enrolled or having an appointment, that should be clear at the entrance. Patti claimed there were signs around the property saying people couldn't enter unless enrolled. I later took photos from the road and still couldn't find that warning at the entrance. What I did see was a small "Welcome to Patti's Swim School" sign. Her email concluded, "I'm sorry if you took offense," and then informed us that the school had a waiting list and couldn't accommodate our children anyway. That doesn't seem like an apology to me. The waiting-list comment felt like an unnecessary, condescending jab. I made a point of not judging Patti's Swim School based only on Michael. I cooled down, contacted Patti privately and gave her a chance to address it. Her response is what ultimately made the decision for me. Again, I can't speak to the quality of the swimming lessons. I can only say that after this interaction and Patti's response, I wouldn't have the trust needed to leave my children in their care. I was especially concerned about my younger one, who's hesitant about getting his head in the water. Amanda has been so patient and reassuring--she calmly addresses his fears, explains what he needs to work on, and encourages him in a way that really builds his confidence. We've been with Waterworks for almost two years now and we've been at every single Hayward location…read more(Foothill, Hesperian, and now Whipple) mostly due to scheduling reasons and being somewhat equal distance to most of them. After a bit of a snafu with the constant HVAC closures at both Hesperian and Whipple, as well as a very professionally handled customer service escalation (shoutout to the amazing support from Alicia) and additional support from a swim manager (thank you Michelle) we can now happily give Waterworks an updated review! I've have now had my son in lessons with both Tay and Zane and couldn't be happier with our son's progress. We've cycled through many instructors through all our time at Waterworks but Tay and Zane have truly been the best match for my child (and we really have had cycled through 4+ instructors before due to high turnover) and we truly hope Tay and Zane are going nowhere anytime soon! My son's confidence has soared since working with both these instructors and I can't wait to see him swim even more independently. Daydreaming about him joining a swim team one day! He went from being in tears out of fear before every swim lesson to eagerly plopping himself into the pool and looking forward to class every time. And even when he does get nervous, both Tay and Zane know how to help him take deep breaths and practice other coping skills to feel less nervous. Waterworks tends to be on the more expensive side but not that much different in pricing than other swim schools in the area. Most importantly, the indoor pool is a perk as I've had friends recommend some of the local swim clubs but since they're all outdoor, the seasonality of swim wouldn't work for us. After a few months of lessons, I was able to get past the mental barrier I had around deep water and finally learned how to tread water. The entire experience has been seamless. Classes can be booked online or if you need to skip a day you can get a make up token. You check in on an iPad and it tells you your lane and instructor. Changing facilities and bathrooms are super clean and plentiful. We never need to wait. Sitting area for parents is comfortable and you can easily see your kid in the pool. Our children have a fear of water on their faces and are super sensitive, but our instructors kindly got them over that fear. Coach Gabe in particular has been so patient with my son, and he has really grown into a confident swimmer in just 3 months! He went from screaming when water touched his face to dunking his head and holding his breath underwater. Their tadpole program is great too for babies and toddlers, although my daughter is not progressing as quickly since she doesn't get 1:1 attention from an instructor. Private lessons are pricier but it's the way to go if you need more help.

In regard to Lap Swimming…read more Hours are pretty flexible. About twenty lanes with the first part of the pool set for those who water walk and about 16 to 17 lanes to lap swim. Depending on the time of the day, some lanes close, for water classes. Be weary, if you go first thing when they open at 6am, and also when they reopen at 4pm or 5pm. There are groups of people that call themselves "The Regulars". A few of them like to put kickboards on open lanes to save for people in line behind you. Sometimes, if there is a long line on a hot summer day. A "Regular" might show up and just cut to the front of the line outside with another "regular" who is there already. Some of these people can be rude and really like their specific lane. And will throw a fit if you happen to take their lane. Some of these "regulars" will even lie and come up with a sob story for you about their past injuries, just to get a specific lane. The staff have not really monitored/enforced certain rules in the past. Hopefully that changes. You have been warned. The "regulars" are nice, as long as you don't get their lane or get in line ahead of them. Some will even show up 1 to 3 hours before the pool opens in the morning and afternoon in order to get their lane. They mean business and can be cutthroat. The place has a lot of potential. Cosmetic wise, it's what you'd expect of a facility that's almost a 100 years old.

For the price you pay for rec swim and toddler swim you can't find a better deal in the East Bay!…read moreWe come to this pool the most frequently out of the 3 indoor public pools in the area, the others being Dublin Wave and Silliman Aquatic center in Newark. Great hours for toddler swim, 11am to 1pm Monday thru Friday and 5 to 7pm Tues, Thursday, Friday. There is also rec swim kn Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30pm. The toddler pool is great for toddlers to get used to the water and there is a depth gradient that will allow them to explore and eventually try to swim. There are also toys provided by the staff for the little ones to play with in the pool. The staff here have always been very nice to us and you can tell that the lifeguards on shift take their jobs seriously. Yes, the facility is almost 100 years old and does show its age, but for $5 total for a baby and an adult as well as the super flexible hours? You just can't beat that deal.
