Also it's a salt water pool, a first for me! The facility and staff are amazing, the signup can get challenging: high demand. Cadence is as follows: Signup starts Saturday at 3pm for the following week. The open slots gets filled quickly, how fast? within (I kid you not) 3 mins. Cost: $6 for non Alameda residents $5 for alameda residents There's also a discounted senior price Pool overview: heated and kept very clean! 7-8 lanes (around 5 time slots per day) - pls verify on their official site provided below. On the regular you have to deal with the following:…read more-towels stolen when left on lounge chairs -belongings thrown off lounge chair and chair taken over while you're in the water -grown adults will get in the lane, won't notify you, begin swimming, crashing head on into you (a bit traumatizing and dangerous) -circle swim w/ 3 people: certain types of people are impatient and angry for whatever reason, demanding you hurry up and push off the wall, are too slow, or try other tactics to bully you out the lane. (I continue swimming at my own pace, refuse to leave the lane) -communal shower, low water pressure. -swimsuit spinner always out of order -the director who sends out weekly newsletters is pretty efficient and has been there for years after previous high turnover.

They got a punch card (10) passes for $64, not bad, if you want to swim for a day, they offer a 1 day pass for only $8 . Parking is free, just on the other side of the road but if you have a handicapped placard you can park near the vicinity. The pool is almost near the post entrance, it's just kinda tricky. For years, people around me told me how nice it was to swim at the Mills College pool. Being…read moreenvironmentally minded - and time sensitive - I resisted. Afterall, I live only a couple blocks away from Temescal Pool, why should I go all the way down to Mills to swim? Well, last August - after some pool princess put on flippers and decided that it was appropriate to swim UNDERNEATH other swimmers without checking in with them in advance of executing this plan and creating three near misses for head-on collisions and refusing to apologize ("I'm sorry if YOU were SCARED" instead of "Sorry - that was rude of me") - I went to Mills. It takes me 34 minutes to swim a mile at Mills - compared to 50-60 minutes at Temescal. Why, you may ask? TRAFFIC. The Temescal pool is always full of people - nobody is good about paying attention to pace in a lane and it's all circle swimming. Mills is pretty big, and I have never had to circle swim. People split the lanes - they get in, have their swim, get out. No sitting in the pool at the end of the lane chit chatting and blocking others from doing flip turns or any of this other nonsense you see at Temescal. If you're a serious fitness swimmer (vs social swimmer) - check out Mills. But - not too many of you - I don't want that place to get crowded! The downside of Mills is that they tend to move around the lap swimming schedule frequently and they are closed down for swim meets. The pool is also closed for two weeks in December (this year they closed several days earlier than advertised).

It's now open through the end of the fall season, which is great, because that's when things start warming up. The facilities are nice and clean, and the pool is just immaculate and beautiful. The water temperature is about 82°, and it felt a little chilly upon entrance, but once you get in and start moving around, it's not that bad. It doesn't really get that crowded here, and they usually have recreation swim for two hours on the weekends. Cost to get in is three dollars for adults, and a dollar for children over six years old. Definitely cannot beat the price. Parking isn't too bad. As long as there is not an event going on. Also, you may have the way through some campers that are around the area, but the pool management has been doing a great job of keeping those away and not having them park right in front of the facility. Great pool, great price, and glad to have this option available for a warm day!

But this Oakland Parks and Rec pool feels like the little forgotten sister, perhaps because of it's location or the fact that Fremont Pool has almost the exact footprint and design of Temescal Pool, which was recently renovated. Despite it's shabby appearance, this pool is constantly filled with children and adults. The OPR website states, "Fremont pool is located at Fremont High School and serves the East Oakland community with fun, safe and recreational programs. Pool use includes swimming classes and lessons for tiny tots, children and adults, swim team practice, water aerobics, recreational swim and so much more." Despite the flooded changing rooms, I always enjoy taking the water aerobics class that occurs at the end of the day after adult swimming lessons. There are generally very few people that show up, and you couldn't ask for a better student to teacher ratio. At times, there are more swim and water aerobics instructors than swimmers themselves! And if you come on a lucky day where Martha is your instructor, be prepared to have the water workout of your life. This woman knows her stuff.

I made the mistake of getting a 10-times swim pass card, anticipating that I would be able to swim…read moreuntil the end of September. Well, we are past the first half of September now and I have not been able to use my pass. The heater is broken and the water in the swimming pool is very cold. The administration makes no attempt to accommodate the community. The pool is open in the morning for a lap swim which makes no sense. The warmer parts of the day are in the afternoon, so the water doesn't warm up until 1:30 PM when they close the pool. Also, the weight room opens up at 6 PM so you cannot coordinate workouts. Oh, and the pool is closed on Saturdays and Sundays when most people have free time to use it. Why not open the pool from 4 pm-6 pm, and on weekends, so people could enjoy warmer water and then use the gym? Please, either make a more sensible schedule or refund my money!

For some reason, my previous review doesn't show up, so I wanted to re-iterate what a great program…read morethis is for swimmers in Alameda. I now have three children swimming (ages 6, 9, and 13) and couldn't ask for a better youth activity. We have now experienced nearly every coach on the team and they all bring amazing strengths to the experience. Coach Ben coaches my youngest and he truly has a gift with young children. Every day the kids are excited to see him and he makes the workout seem like fun and games. Yet he still manages to instill the discipline required to keep the workouts flowing and make sure the kids are safe and listening to instructions. Under his tutelage the kids get better almost without realizing it. My middle child has Coach Brett and his strength is imparting excellent technical skills while maintaining a fun atmosphere. My nine year old loves his jokes and sense of humor. She also knows, however, that she will be working hard every minute of the time she is there. While younger she would have hated that, but the swim program gradually builds the kids' enthusiasm and skills so that they are ready for the challenges that the next group brings. My oldest has Coach Marshall and for her it is like her family. They joke, laugh, tease, and work hard every single day to achieve her goals. Marshall works with each swimmer to determine what they want to accomplish and how to get there. Any assistance that she needs is available, including weight training, dry land, and a multitude of workouts per week. Gators has been so wonderful for her that she now wants to swim in college. I am confident that the team can help her get there. I encourage anyone with a child who loves swimming to try the Gators.

The coaches use positive reinforcement and let the kids think they're just having fun when actually they're learning! My very first Gator (now 17 years old) swims on the high school Varsity swim team, still loving it and now very competitive. The work ethic he learned with the Gators led him to be both Freshman and Sophomore "swimmer of the year". And he had fun working that hard. Rest assured that the life skills taught gently, positively, and subtly through the Ala-Gators will give your swimmer a solid base through high school, and beyond.
