It's not every day that you find a place that does boba *and* mochi donuts well, but Fat Straws has some bragging rights in both. Primarily a bubble tea spot when they first opened, they managed to be among the first few places to offer the infamous "Pon de Ring" (#1) just a few years ago. Fast forward to several locations and lots of expansion, they've fully incorporated the mochi + boba into their lineup and brand. This Preston Rd location isn't quite as popular as the Plano or Alpha Rd locations, but it's getting there. It's a small store, with some seating for small parties and lots of strip mall parking. Like the rest, it's clean and modern and perfect for the youngins. And just like their IG friendly brand, it's colorful and convivial throughout. They seem to have rebounded back to full staffing and indoor seating, which was extremely problematic during the height of the pandemic. If we're talking strictly donuts, matcha will always have a special place in my mochi loving heart. Fruity pebbles will always do well for social media purposes and is as sweet as it looks. The dark horse is the pandan coconut, as well as the black sesame / tiger (seasonal). If they have any specials available, it's always worth considering. It's about $28 for a dozen, $15 for a half. From a beverage front, their drinks are as colorful as their donuts. I really enjoy their seasonal specials such as their watermelon cooler and strawberry pineapple lemonade. The brewed teas, such as their jasmine blueberry, hibiscus cooler, and happy tea are more of my speed during the summer months. The house milk tea skews a bit on the sweeter side, but I'm not mad at it. I also think it's worth looking at some of their other varieties such as the pineapple fresca, pumpkin spice anything, or the vanilla berry truffle milk tea. They have specials often and I think it's worth checking out their social media pages prior to a visit. They could include drink bundles, special menu items, and even discounts. Having a son that loves Boba, I've tried a lot of Boba places. This one is just not good. The Boba tea itself is just gross. Sorry (not sorry?). The ingredients seem to taste worse, especially the milk used in the Boba. Again, I've had a ton of these, and for some reason the mom and pop shops are better than this chain. Also, the mochi donuts make me want to never try mochi donuts again. The chocolate sprinkles one was the only decent one, probably because the chocolate flavor masked the taste of the donut itself. Vanilla is the next one that is just ok. My son loves all sweets, and actually said the strawberry one was horrible. Overall, unfortunately we won't be back, just did not taste good. Fat Straws used to be my fav boba shop in DFW but has recently lost its quality. I'm not sure I will be returning. To preface, I have a milk sensitivity and I cannot drink anything that has whole milk or heavy cream. I ordered the pandan latte and told the cashier that I wanted coconut milk with it and she promptly told me that it already had coconut milk so I didn't have to order it with it. Once we received the drinks, they looked different from the previous year that I got them (I think in 2022) so I asked if they have milk or cream in the drink. The girl that made the drinks said that the recipe changed from last year and it definitely had dairy in it. It was upsetting because 1) the cashier didn't tell me that it had dairy in it and 2) I was looking forward to having the pandan latte and the recipe changed so I couldn't drink it anymore. The girl that made the drinks ignored me after I told her I couldn't drink the drink she made and said that I could order another drink to replace it. I had to get back in line and order which took a while. I ordered the raspberry fruit tea and it was really artificial tasting and I really didn't like it. I didn't want to be a bother (because they already remade my order once) so I didn't go back inside and ask for another drink. read more

This is my frequent spot for bubble teas in Big D. Semi-sweet I've learned to order. Having tried quite a few flavors here, my go-tos now are Matcha and Horchata. They had a lot of flavors to choose from and the flavors I was most curious about, the cashier recommended against. Knowing that it was my first time having mochi, the cashier gave me and my boyfriend samples of almost every flavor. It seriously made my day and I could see why they didn't recommend the flavors I had wanted - that being matcha and black sesame. They recommended strawberry which I loved. It was as if someone melted strawberry pocky flavor on top! The fruity pebbles was decent but i would add that the cereal gets soggy. This location is COVID friendly. They have curbside pickup available for you, you just have to call and tell them to bring it out. Love the safety ness of it all. Japanese Mochi Donuts never disappoint. They are so chewy and flavorful. Majority of the flavors are always spot on. Today, we picked up 4 flavors from their Lunar New Year lineup. My personal favorite was the Ube and my boyfriends favorite was Coconut Pandan. Thai tea was okay, there wasn't a "wow" factor for me. Vietnamese Coffee is good for those who enjoy coffee flavors. If you're around the area, you should definitely check this place out and pick up some donuts for yourself (and maybe some boba too)! Unfortunately, there are very few parking spots. I was lucky because I went when it wasn't busy in the middle of the day, but I can imagine it can get busy at peak hours. As for COVID precautions, I'd say they're doing quite well! The first and only con I would say about Fat Straws is that the milk teas did not taste as well as I thought it would. However everything else was amazing! I came to this location recently and was enticed by the bubble donuts known as Chewy Puffs (too cute)! When I arrived, the colorful aesthetic was like a dream. I'm a fan when it comes to utilizing all things color and vibrancy so this was huge. I ordered six chewy puffs and two milk teas, one Matcha Milk Tea and one Regular Milk tea. The chewy puff flavors I chose (out of SO many) were Cookies n' Cream, Coffee, Chocolate, Black Sesame Seed and Matcha. EVERY. PUFF. WAS. DELICIOUS! They are definitely not like your regular super glazed and filling donuts - they were so yummy and UNfilling that I couldn't stop myself! My husband had to actually stop me... ANYWAY, it was perfectly sweet and adorable to eat. Because this and for how many more flavors were available that I didn't get to try, it makes me want to continue coming back - definitely worth a half an hour drive if you get a huge box, just be warned of it's goodness! As for the teas, the milk teas just did not taste like I normally have bubble tea. But that would not stop me from coming back here. Usually when I feel disappointed in the boba, it's mainly because of the actual boba tea...the product...the main event. The taro milk tea was pretty fake. They definitely use powder and it shows. The taste was so synthetic and really disappointing. Gone are the days when boba spots can use powdered flavors! Boba has become so crazy expensive compared to how much they truly are worth, and it's sad when I find out that certain spots use powders. I'd rather go to Sharetea because they actually use real taro root. I wonder if their other milk teas are yummy, but I'm crossing their taro MT off my list. The tapioca boba pearls were on the softer side and missing the chewy QQ-ness I love. However, I've had worser pearls, and these were just average. I do want to give them props for allowing a change of sugar levels. I got my usual 0% and it was perfect. I can't imagine having it any sweeter--it'd be too overwhelming. I wanted to look at their modo's or mochi donuts, but I didn't even see anything like a display case. If I didn't do any research beforehand, I wouldn't have known that Fat Straws sold anything else except boba teas. There wasn't a large sign when I placed my order or any indication that they even sold these mochi donuts. Maybe they ran out around 9pm on Saturday, which is when I came...but still! They let my girlfriend try a couple flavors and they even suggested the honey dew milk tea. I tried the Taro Milk Tea, something safe that I sometimes get at Milk Tea places. After receiving our drinks, I was just veeeeerryyy underwhelmed, and wasn't exactly enjoying it. The honeydew is kinda of sweet.. a bit too sweet for us and it just didn't taste all that natural for us. Nonetheless, they allowed her to switch it up for her choice of a Jasmine Milk Tea. I've had a lot of Jasmine MT's and this one was just underwhelming as well. When I say that I've had better Milk Teas, all other milk teas I had before was certainly better than this one. I was first introduced to the Plano location many years ago and have been hooked ever since. It's seriously addictive - you go once, then have to go several days afterward. And I must say, once you have Fat Straws boba, you won't really like any other boba. I've decided that maybe Fat Straws boba is just a little different because I do know they have their own recipe. Every other boba I've tried from different little shops seem to be a much harder texture and smaller in size yet same concept. My go-to is the happy tea with double bubbles or I'll do a coffee frappe with double bubbles. The happy tea is basically kind of like a sweet tea but I order it unsweetened, and the coffee frappe is self explanatory. They have tons of options here and different combinations so you can always find something that interests you. As I like to consider Fat Straws to be a treat, I really don't think you can be disappointed. It's sooo yummy. Best boba in Dallas for-sure. read more
