We had a great experience doing some shore dives with Fathom Five at Koloa Landing. Although the conditions were not the best (outside of their control), Noah did a great job of giving us the best experience possible. We used dive lights on our second dive to counteract poor visibility. Saw lots of sea turtles! We will be back to do Tunnels and Niihau when it's not winter. I just finished a few days of diving with Fathom Five. This is my second trip to Kauai, my last one being in 2016. I found Fathom Five on the earlier trip and had a great time. You will not be disappointed! I took my son this time, and we had a spectacular time. Day 1 we dove with Jordan (boat captain) and Anthony, (Dive Master). They took great care of us. Prior to boarding, Anthony gave everyone a refresher and talked about dive safety and boat operations. Once we were at each respective site (day 1 was a 3 tank, 3 site dive day) they would assess the site before anyone got wet to make sure we had clear visibility and would have a good time. They didn't miss a beat. Anthony spent alot of time making sure we saw alot of endemic sea life and other creatures. Day 2 was a 2 tank, 2 site dive. Jordan was the divemaster, and Beau was our boat Captain. As with day 1, we had a quality safety briefing and set out to sea. They took our input as to what we wanted to see and picked two great sites. (Buoy #2 and Sheraton Caverns). I have never seen larger turtles in Hawaii than at Sheraton Caverns. Amazing video and photos, two white tip reef sharks and lots of other great stuff. Jordan was great under water and we had an amazing experience. Due to Covid, lunch on the boat is limited, but hopefully that will change. There were plenty of pre-packaged snacks and juices / soft drinks available though. Beau, Jordan, Anthony and the rest of the dive team at Fathom Five took great care of us. Lance kept us informed as to pre-dive day conditions and made sure we had a great time. THEY ARE OPEN!!! This was our first time diving on the island of Kauai. We selected Fathom Five after reading online reviews and the information they have on their website. We went on 3 dives with them and this will be our go to dive shop any time we visit Kauai in the future! All staff members we interacted with were exceptional. We were very impressed with each dive master's thoroughness in the dive plan briefing, emergency procedures, and their knowledge of the marine life on Kauai. This is the most thorough briefing we've received with any dive company and it is much appreciated! Additionally, we loved that the dive groups are small (4 divers). It makes for a non chaotic situation when underwater and trying to keep a group together. Our first dive was at Koloa Landing. Lani helped us at the shop with the gear we needed to rent and gave us directions to meet at the dive site (it's a short drive from the shop). Our DM was Shaun. He was fabulous and took us out for two awesome dives that morning! This is a great "warm up" dive if you've never been to Kauai. And yes, even if you normally aren't a huge fan of shore dives, you will love this one! Super easy to get in and out. Our second dive was at night. Noah assisted us at the shop. He is a dive master as well and shared a wealth of knowledge with us about Kauai diving. He also told us what to expect for our night dive (it was our first one ever). When we got to the boat harbor (also a very short drive from the shop), DM Reid & Mercedes were waiting for us. We dove Sheraton Caverns at dusk for our first dive and then our second dive was at Harbor Ledges. It is such a neat experience to dive at night and I highly recommend it! Our third dive was with DM Julie & Thomas at "Damselville" and Sheraton Caverns. Despite diving Sheraton Caverns already, we really enjoyed it the second time around as well! It was a totally different experience than at dusk and offered its own beauty. Throughout all of our dives were blessed to see an incredible amount of marine life on all of our dives - octopi, sharks, eels, various species of fish, and of course LOTS of turtles! On 29-Sep-22, I dove with Fathom Five at Tunnels Beach for two shore dives. I greatly appreciated their spot-on instructions on how to find the meeting place, as well as their preparedness before heading to shore. They were very professional with safety being the priority at all times, yet they were also very friendly and approachable. Had I more time to spend on the island, I would have definitely booked more dives. If you're ever diving in Kauai, I highly recommend Fathom Five. Also, Jeanettes giant slate is something I wish dive masters would use more often. Providing a name to what she was pointing to was very helpful and educational. Dove with both Katie and with Shaun as dive masters. Sergio was captain on both days I dove. Both days were 2 tank dives. All were super friendly and helpful. Dive masters were super experienced and knowledgeable. At no time was anyone rushed or made to feel uncomfortable. Something super special was that Sergio spent the time between tanks looking for wildlife with the boat as it was a time of year when the dolphins and whales were in the area. I rented all equipment other than my mask, and all was in perfect working order. As a side note, I received my open water certification under Shaun 2 years ago. He is an excellent instructor. He is a great communicator and takes his job as an instructor very seriously. I highly recommend him as an instructor as well. read more

Decided last minute to do a night dive on our trip to Hawaii. We had a great night dive and saw a ton of turtles which was incredible especially at night. This was my husband's first night dive and our dive master did a great job explaining everything to him and making sure he was comfortable throughout the course of the dive. We did a morning boat dive with Captain Janis and Divemaster Chris. Our first dive was Harbor Ledges where Chris pointed out an octopus for our viewing pleasure. We also saw turtles, box fish, a baby eel, scorpion fish and nini branch. Our second dive at Sheraton Caverns had several swim throughs and we saw turtles, moray eels, and a long nose hawkfish. We did a second day of diving with Captain Beau and Divemaster Loni. Our first dive was Fast Lanes where we saw turtles, box fish, trumpet fish, a cushion starfish, spotted toby. Went out to Sheraton caves with Lonnie and Bo. Embarrassed to admit this, but I had a panic attack for the first time ever while diving (I've been diving since I was 15), and Lonnie managed the situation like an absolute pro. I've had one or two dive masters over the years that I wouldn't have trusted, but I was really impressed with Lonnie. My husband finished the dives while I stayed up on the boat and he had a great time. How do you spend the last day before you turn 60? For my money I would go diving with Fanthom Five. Went on the most Epic dive of my life. They take all the work out of diving by helping you in and out of your gear, switching out your tanks and generally make sure you are ready so all you do is, well dive and explore. My dive master was outstanding, giving us a brief on what they expected to see and what we should be looking for but they pointed out everything you can imagine. Not only did we see 15 or more turtles getting their shells cleaned at the turtle cleaning station but about a bazillion fish there were lobster, shrimp, eel, white tip reef sharks and for good measure a humpback started to breach when we got back to the boat, and this was on one tank. For the second tank we changed locations and saw even more. This is not the first time I have gone diving with Fanthom Five but it is my first review. I have been pleased every time I go with them. For those of you that rent gear like me they have excellent rental gear. None of the torn wetsuits I have had from other company's just high-quality new gear. Great fins, masks, BCD's and anything else you need. read more

We did our 4 referral dives with Katie at Fathom 5 and are so happy with the experience. It was our first time diving in the ocean (good bye, pools) and Katie helped us all to feel comfortable by patiently ensuring that we understood everything before moving on to the next level. Unfortunately I have to give an honest review here. I've been diving for years, Hawaii, Caribbean, even for work a lot. This was a very underwhelming experience. Let's start with the good, once under water, the first site was good and the second was ok. The girl who dove with us was nice enough and tried to make the best of our dives. My only criticism for her would be the same I seem to dislike about almost all dive guides, please don't stop the group in tight, closed and confined spaces. We stopped a few times in tight tunnels and that where inexperienced divers start causing lots of problems, I got banged around a few times. Also, diving is about enjoying the marine life, they tell divers not to touch anything, while they are constantly grabbing, touching, kneeing and kicking reef, I watched hands fins and knees do damage to reef multiple times on a single trip out..... Now, in my opinion, this trip should have been canceled for safety and diver comfort. The ocean was WAY too rough for the teeny tiny boat they go out in. You shouldn't be out in 10ft seas in a 20ft dingy. I got seasick, which I haven't in years and I had taken meds for it, which I also haven't needed in years. That should at least say something. I was throwing up when we arrived at the first site and was rushed into my equipment and told to get under the water asap. I understand the idea behind this, but pushing a sick person into gear and under water, not good. Let them take a few extra seconds if needed. We got back to the dock and the lady who basically wouldn't allow me to handle MY OWN GEAR, informed me she broke my mask and just kinda laughed it off. No offer to repair/replace or anything like that. My gear was all set on the dock and I took it to start cleaning it all and realized that she had sprinkled nasty rusty water from somewhere on the boat all over all of my gear. Now my dive gear was one thing, rinse and move on, but my personal items, $40 t shirt, $30 Mauibuilt towel that I had just pulled tags off of, clean dry board shorts, all stained with rusty water spots now....... All in all, I would strongly recommend just diving with someone else, look for better boats, equipment and staff. read more

FFD is a true gem! Last week I went out with them for the 3 tank Ni'ihau trip and also a 2 tank regular boat dive trip, and both were spectacular. I really appreciate the care, knowledge, patience and expertise of the crew and especially the dive master, Sean (Shawn) (spelling?). He was an expert at managing the different levels of expertise among the group of divers, ensuring that everyone was well-informed and safe, while also finding and pointing out a huge variety of marine life. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the marine life and geology of the island, easily pointing out and teaching us about the endemic fish species, monk seals, nudibranchs, current patterns, coral life, and so much more. I highly recommend FFD and will be back here next time I'm in Kauai. read more

I don't even know where to start or if there are even words to paint the picture of how magical this trip was and actually do it justice. We did the 3 tank Ni'ihau dive. It is a TRUE adventure! It's a long day, you will be exhausted by the end so I can only imagine how tired the crew must've been. First, I want to say that while of course you are going to a bucket list location, no matter where you are, or how amazing the location, if you do not have a fantastic guide, it will seriously dampen if not completely ruin the experience. Julie was our guide and I could not be more grateful to have had the pleasure of meeting her and being guided by her. She is full of love and passion, kindness and excitement and it truly shines through not just in each word that she speaks but also in each motion or cue she gives underwater. Actually, underwater I noticed it even more, her energy would just engulf you, further magnifying any feelings of awe, appreciation or wonder that you were already feeling! I can't stress enough what an asset to the company an amazing guide like this is! Her persona should be the goal of what every company encompasses, from the face of the company, to the guide, to the managers and owners. Julie fully prepped us before entering the water making sure we were safe and knew about where we were going and what to keep a lookout for. She said what an honor it was to take us which honestly made my heart swell because you could feel that she really meant it and the sincerity of her words were palpable. We witnessed two monk seals squabble a bit underwater and Julie had even prepped us for that so when we saw it (which doesn't by any means happen every dive trip), we knew what was happening and why. She also had this little etch-a-sketch pad for writing so she would write what we were seeing. Around her neck she wore a noise rattle to get our attention. Between her prepping us above water, the writing slate and the rattle, it made for a super smooth experience with a nice flow. The boat only takes a maximum group of 6 people, but we were extra fortunate to only have one other couple with us who were also very friendly and fun so the entire day felt more like a trip out with friends versus a guided tour. When we got to our first dive location, we were greeting by dolphins surfing in the boat wake and a monk seal at the surface. Not a terrible way to start the dive! The first two drive spots we pretty much had a monk seal with us the entire time! Different ones, but he would just hang out and swim around us, up to us, over and under us. Go away for a bit and then come back. That alone was worth the trip! We live on Big Island and don't have very many monk seals on our island so it's rare to see them when you're in the ocean, usually we just get a glance as they sleep on the beach. Each dive we got nearly a full hour underwater which was lovely and unexpected. We never felt rushed or like the crew was ready to end their day. We felt as if they were enjoying everything as much as we were. I can't even remember or name all of the things we saw but a short list would include: monk seals, spotted eagle rays, sharks, leather coral, nudibranch, lion fish, frog fish, golden chub, pipe fish, eels, ulua, and lobsters. There was one point where we approached a drop off and there were THREE spotted eagle rays, a shark AND a monk seal (not to mention a trillion fish) ALL IN THE SAME CAMERA FRAME! I am pretty sure we swam through a magic portal. Julie pointed out various endemic fish and I saw many new fish for the first time and certainly tons of things I would not have seen had she not pointed them out. Janice was our captain. It was a pretty rough day on the water, especially on the way back to shore, but Janice navigated the waters efficiently and got us back safe (as well as the boat!) which is no easy task in that channel! She also was on top of helping us with taking our gear off and on, getting out of the water. I always feel bad that the captains didn't get to experience what we do while doing boat dives, it takes a special person to deal with all the difficult stuff and not really get to reap all the rewards. When we got back to the harbor, we were greeted by a big beautiful rainbow. My boyfriend and I feel grateful to even have had the opportunity to do something like this. What an adventure Fathom 5 provides! This was my birthday gift to him, it will be a hard birthday to top! Truly the day couldn't have been any better and I can't wait to do it again! read more

Fathom Five is my favorite dive operator on the island! I've had great dives with other companies, but Fathom Five is the most fun. The staff at the shop and the dive team are all super personable and incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. On this most recent dive we were greeted with friendly smiles and a hot cup of coffee to start the day. Then off to the boat for a smooth ride out to the dive sites. They know how to avoid the crowds and find the best wildlife experiences, giving us a great marine biology lesson before we dropped in so that we knew what to expect - and they did not disappoint! Lava tubes, turtles galore, all varieties of colorful reef fish and corals from the tiny to big boys. To top it off we encountered two different octopus, one bigger than any of us had seen on any dive before. Great people, great sites, great dives! read more

Booked the entire deal online. Even the waiver and dive equipment specification was done via email or the web. I only phoned in to confirm the dive conditions and meeting location. 7AM at the shop in Koloa. Then a 5-10 min van ride to the dock in Poipu, depending on if there are pickups along the way. I dove with Linda and she was a fantastic guide of the underwater playground there in Kauai. Extremely knowledgeable and best part was she brought it with her underwater with a tablet so she could write to us underwater. We dove Turtle Bluffs, Fish Bowl, and Yellow Brick Road outside Poipu and included a mini drift dive. Viz was greater than 60 LF and the waves were minimal. LOVED the fresh cookies as an on board snack between dives. Captain Tom was great; pointed out a ton of whales, flying fish, even a manta above the surface. Gave us ample time to empty our bladders at every rest stop. Equipment: Wetsuit was brand new. BCD with integrated weights and octopus were in great shape. Fins were standard slip on type. Shop is an Aqualung dealer so it carries only that brand. Improvements: I paid the extra for Nitrox, but only got 1 tank for the 1st deeper dive. The 2nd dive was regular air. I know the 2nd dive is shallower and the Nitrox there is not really necessary for bottom time, but I choose to dive Nitrox b/c of the additional energy it gives me after a morning of dives over regular air. This helps since I've ditched the wife and kids for that half day and they're gung ho to go right after I get back from diving. I think next time it should be clearer upfront if the Nitrox upcharge is for 2 tanks or just 1. I dove with a wireless transmitter to monitor my air pressure. It was the first time I was using it. When the transmitter was installed on the octopus, a high pressure port was made available by removing the rented depth gauge / computer. I would have liked to have had that as a redundant backup in case something went wrong with my new equipment. It would have been nice to install the transmitter onto high pressure port without losing any equipment. read more

Great boat, excellent equipment, wonderfully and information dive master. Highly recommend. This is a local, family run business that has expertise in diving all over Kauai. They were incredibly flexible and very careful with our group, which included 3 kids (13-16 years), two of whom were new divers. They made sure everyone was comfortable and safe throughout the dive.
