España Painting with Erwin at the helm, is what other service businesses should be. Professional, excellent communcation, prompt and detailed estimates, flexible with pricing options, and straight up about costs. Erwin is always open to questions and kept us informed. Justifiably proud of the work they do. Pricing is fair and competitive, and the quality is outstanding. He wants his work to last. The prep work- it is all about the prep as anyone will tell you- was thorough, and nearly dust-free. Down to bare wood or solid old finish, sanded, primed, and two coats, well-applied. No one can do this level of work without hiring and retaining excellent people, and Erwin clearly has. Victor and David were on-time, respectful of neighbors, generous with automobile covers, and did outstanding work at all levels (and floors!) Not just the painting, but the carpentry. (I have renovated several houses over my lifetime and his crew, the same as were painting, were as good as any I hired in over 40 years.) The painting was crisp and immaculate, The site was cleaned up daily and the inevitable impacts on we the occupants, was held to the absolute minimum. Poor prep work overall, none in some places. We were going to replace all the windows anyway, but I'd be really upset if we had to buy new windows because of them. Speaks to their lack of care/professionalism, and communicating with them was difficult at best. They didn't scrape some of the vertical trim at all, just painted over existing peeling finish. Lasted maybe 5 years and needed to be redone. Didn't properly replace wood trim with Aztek, or similar, even though that's what I paid for. I recently had to redo all of it since water was trapped and rotted the wood behind it (which, again, I paid to have replaced). I should have watched them closely when they were here. I'm not sure I even got a second coat either and if I did it was sprayed on (saw them using a sprayer at some point NOT hand painting). Now I have many areas where the clapboards/trim/sheathing are damaged due to years of insufficient protection. I paid for caulking to be applied where clapboards meet the vertical trim. This didn't happen at all, and cost us quite a bit in rotted sheathing and cedar. Around the chimney the work was really poor. Really a shame since the price was good and the owner seemed competant and the company had signs everywhere at the time. All of the vertical trim peeled about 5 years later, exposing raw wood, it clearly had very little adhesion and also had a latex quality about it, not stain. So I think they stained right over the paint. This paint job caused me a great deal these years later. Won't be using them again.

Even though their pricing was at the high end of the estimates we received, i chose them because…read moreof: their great reviews here and elsewhere; affiliation with WBUR public radio and Historic New England; their estimate was extremely detailed; and they work on a lot of old houses. I expected their attention to detail and customer service to be just as detailed as their estimate but they fell far short of meeting our expectations. If it weren't for me directing the painters each day, we would've had a number of areas that were either not painted at all, not properly prepped, or painted the wrong color. I gave one star because their painters did an acceptable job...but only because I had to manage them by myself. They needed direction, which the project manager Pete did not provide. And when he was here he never gave me a heads up; if I happened to notice Pete was here he would disappear before I could get outside to look at things with him. At the end of the job, even on the last day, he did not meet with us when punch list items should have been reviewed. They also refused to do the last bit of work we planned on. It was estimated separately because they were still discussing with us which floor sealer to use and another contractor had to install the gutters first before they came back to paint them. Pete, backed up by Nigel (the owner) decided they didn't want to work with us anymore because they "did not meet our expectations." Normally if a business admits to not meeting the expectations of their customer, they try to correct the problem to make the customer happy. In this case, apparently because we complained about the above issues as well as some damage to our antique hardware and floor, they dumped us with 1-2 days work left to do. (They didn't have to honor the second estimate because we hadn't paid a deposit yet - they hadn't billed us yet, though we technically had a verbal and written agreement via email). Lesson learned, if you arrange work on a separate estimate, be sure to pay the deposit so they are locked into finishing your job! When invoiced, they tried to charge us for work not done (I knew this because I was here everyday managing the job) so i had to ask them to reduce the bill by that amount. When I received the adjusted invoice, I asked for a discount due to our dismal experience, the amount of personal time I had to spend managing this project, as well as the damage that they did not address. The owner responded by threatening to have his lawyer put a lien on our house instead of first trying to make this right, which is the number one tenet of customer service. Incredibly disappointing and confusingly awful customer service. DO NOT HIRE THEM.
