I was finally able to visit University tap with Sherryoke afyer a long time of hearing good things. However, the bartender Misha was iincredibly unkind and rude when i unfortunately gor sick ad i was sitting at the bar and instead ot wishing her concern whether I was on or not, she prompted to yell at me and tell.me to leave immediately. I understand the frustration and co cern that takes place when such a rhing happens, but common humac decency should prevail o er freaking out at a new customer . I will n9t return if she is the bartender. read more

Horrible service this evening. Ordered a pizza, waitress said we needed to pay right away as the special ended in 20 minutes. No problem. 40 minutes later, the table next to us gets their pizza, they arrived 10 minutes after us. They received the wrong pizza. 15 more minutes and our waitress asked what we ordered. The cook came out and was nice, but was clearly confused by the waitress. I would have left, but had to pre-pay, and was so hungry. After an hour and a half, we get our pizza. I asked for boxes, I was so frustrated and just wanted out of there. My friend and I left in one car, and my brother waited to finish his beer. As he was leaving the waiting was on the patio on the phone complaining about us. What a shit show. Will not be returning. read more

Great little neighborhood bar, where it seems like everyone knows each others names and they are always glad you came! Some might consider divey, but it's not really. It is dark, but the blue light of the tv showing the Twins and Cubs games, keeps us aglow! Also Elvis is playing on the Touch Tunes.. So in other words I'm in heaven. Sommer the bartender is top notch, and always there with a smile and a cheap cold brew waiting for you! They got great happy hour deals on food and drinks.. I like the Sunday 2.75 tall boy! Where you going find deals like that? The bar is right off the bike trail so, very easy to ride too, and or drive! You want dive bar, I'll show you dive bar. you'll find a smattering of usual suspects drinking reasonably priced beverages and bellied up to the bar. Food is not too bad (graziano on the pizza! I like the hot sicilian but its not for the sensitive type). Depending on when you show up you might score a good happy hour or free pool. This place is actually not that bad...not my typical hangout, but I went for karaoke on Wednesday evening with friends because their show starts at 7; most karaoke around here starts at 9 during the week, which doesn't work for my friends with kids who have to get up super early. First impression upon driving up: there is a small patio adjacent to the parking lot...I heard loud country music wafting from inside and the couple sitting at the patio were obviously already inebriated at 7 on weeknight. Not usually a good sign, but I'm willing to try anything once. Upon entering, I noticed how dark this place was, most of the light comes from beer lights on the wall and TVs glowing with baseball games. Very minimal seating unless you want to sit at the bar. We managed a small table over by the pool table; I liked the bar stools with 8 balls on them. The karaoke was a bit confusing...no books or slips for requesting songs, but the DJ who runs the show is actually very friendly and likes to chat, it's a welcoming kind of place. Just go up to his computer and request a song...he'll search for it and enter it into the rotation. Mostly country tunes for most of the show, but at least everyone was having a good time and I even got complimented on singing "Angel from Montgomery" by Bonnie Raitt as we were leaving. There was a super cute couple (woman obviously pregnant) who sang a duet and of "Say Something" by A Great Big World with harmonies....a definite highlight. Drinks were reasonable, but not the cheapest I've seen which is a big reason I enjoy a good dive bar from time to time. They did have Des Moines IPA on tap, which was surprising and even though it was busy, it didn't take too long to get served. So, would I come back? If I'm bored on a Wednesday night and already made a stop over at Mayhem comics and 515 Brewing (in the same strip mall) I might pop in for a quick tune if I'm feeling like singing any Patsy Cline. Endless Sommer: U Tap is uniquely it's own. On the surface it's a pretty typical dive bar (which isn't a bad thing) but they manage to make an event out of any day. Specials for Monday night football, weekend brunch, karaoke nights, Yelp events, there's almost always something going on. They've also managed to make pretty solid pizza with homemade sauce and are extremely flexible about how they go about doing so. Have an ingredient that you want but they don't happen to have? What an incredible venue! They have beers, FREE POOL and hardly any serial murderers at all. The Captain Jack gambler machine happily took my $13 without even the slightest inclination that it would pay me a single nickel. Okay, i wanted to hate it. I doubt want to be in des Moines and certainly didn't want to say anything nice... but.... it's just awesome. Please do not come her until i hop home because it's just too busy and very worth waiting for. The breakfast was killer, jerrod was prince charming, the chef and staff were kind, quality, fun, sarcastic and amazing. I really wanted to hate it and dislike des Moines in general but the staff and regular customers made we so terribly at home i can't! This sucks! And don't drink the bloody Mary's either. The bartender was great. She pours good drinks. Prices are decent too. I was visiting g from out of town and we went on Thanksgiving Eve with the purpose to hanging out with old friends and to sing karaoke. However, the DJ ended at 11pm. WHAT??? I tried to give him some money and asked if he could stay longer, but he said no. Our group of about 8-10 people ended up going to a different bar for karaoke. What a bummer that this bar lost out on our buying drinks for a few more hours. Disappointing doesn't cover it. read more

University Tap has a new fan! Ive only been in here twice now but I can definitely see myself back here all the time! Classic divey bar with lots of character. Lots of great specials on drinks & pizza! Mondays pizzas are half priced! They are cooked to order and made with specialty sauce made in house. Different drink specials everyday and karaoke! Theres even breakfast pizza on Saturdays. They've got your TVs for when you want to catch the game or your fave tv show. The women's restroom was one of the nicest setups I have seen, especially being a bit on the divey side. Kim, the owner has everything in there you could need and stuff you may you not know you need! Very thoughtful! Theyve got a great new bartender, super attentive and friendly! There is a patio for smokers. Lots of room at the bar and plenty of tables if youve got a bigger group! I will definitely be back in to take advantage of some of the specials and try out more pizza! read more

Great place!! If you are looking for a fun place with great karaoke this is your spot. The owners(Kim and Chuck) are one of the nicest I've met. The first time we went here they welcomed us like we were in their living room and we're old friends. Even the regulars make you feel welcomed. I highly recommend you visit !!
