When I visited Amsterdam, trying a croquette was a must. I discovered a unique croquette vending machine shop and got a croquette from there. Surprisingly, the croquette was hot, as if it had just been cooked and served. The creamy filling was delicious, and the breadcrumb coating was very crunchy. It was really good! I wish we had this type of vending machine in our hometown. It was a unique experience, and I would love to go back and try different items. read more

You just scan your payment for the food option you want and press a button and the door opens. They also have people working inside if you need any help. The food was warm and very good. FEBO (pronounced "fay-bo") is a Netherlands - but more specifically Amsterdam - tradition. It is a company that specializes in delivering food via automat, aka a vending machine. Japan may have more things to sell inside a vending machine, but what they don't have is something like this. This location is particularly convenient because they are located in an alley tucked behind Dam Square. I think that this particular location closes earlier than others (note the 7pm or 9pm closing time). The signature item of FEBO are their croquettes. I got their veal croquette (kalfsvleeskroket) made of a mixture of Dutch veal and ragout. Exact change is required so I deposited my €2 coin into the slot and I was able to pick it up. Still warm but not fresh as it had cooled down a bit. The ragout was flavorful and I could see the pieces of veal. Still good for €2 as I'm not expecting a FEBO croquette to be jaw-dropping. There are 4 flavors of croquettes, 2 types of burgers and their kaassoufflé made of Gouda cheese. All of these can be bought via automat. Fries, shakes, crispy chicken pieces and drinks can be purchased over the counter. That requires actually talking to someone. Also, another caveat: they don't take Visa/Mastercard - Dutch cards only, even with a contactless machine. Was grateful that the lady in the counter explained this to me. It's not about the greasy, fried, processed, fatty, only-God-knows-what-ingredients pieces of food that come out of the machine. It's about the experience. There's something about putting the right amount of coins into the slot, and slowly opening the small door to reveal a golden croquette. It feels like winning a prize! Like those annoying claw machines. Only here, you won't have to waste all your coins and walk away with nothing. Yes, I'm from NYC so there are plenty of late night food options. Anything you want, really. But FEBO machines are just so convenient! For 2-4 Euros, you can get items ranging from croquettes to hamburgers, or fries and drinks at the counter. I saw on a television show that they have workers behind the walls that makes sure the slots are refilled just as quickly as they get empty. The food isn't particularly good, but if you're thinking about going to FEBO for great food, then you may need to reevaluate your life. I love that I can't tell what's inside because each deep fried brown log looks like the next deep fried brown log so every time I open your little doors, it's like Christmas morning. I've heard stories from friends from the Netherlands about the horrible Dutch fast food from the vending machines, so when I saw FEBO, I was so excited to try this! There were so many different kinds of greasy fried stuff behind the little sliding doors, and we emptied all our coins to try as many different things as we could. For what it was--cheap fast food--it wasn't too bad. Salty, crunchy, hot, some with gooey insides--it was a pretty tasty little treat to ourselves on a Friday afternoon and satisfied all our guilty pleasures of unhealthy junk food. There's even a little bar area along the wall to sit and eat your goodies if you wish. What I didn't get was that there was a counter with someone behind it, but everyone was opting to hit up the vending machines instead. Perhaps you only order the fries and milkshakes at the counter? I was a bit curious as to what the milkshakes tasted like, but I didn't get to try any. read more

Such a freaking cool Amsterdam fast food experience! Their fried croquettes are amazing. Each pastry is 2 euros or so, and a friend and I tried five different pastries (including one kip chicken). Everything was delicious and so so so deep-fried and good. The inside of the croquettes was like the inside of chicken pot pie with lots of gravy and cream. I tried four different flavors of croquettes: beef, satay beef, veal, and chicken, and they were all delicious! They were really all equivalent in flavor, so you can't go wrong with any of them. However, the satay definitely has a lot of strong Indian flavors, so if you don't want to taste of a lot Eastern spices, get the (plain) beef or chicken or veal. All were very satisfying. read more

You just insert a few coins, open the little slot and pull out whatever you want. OK, you look like you're having a panic attack. I get it, there are bright lights, your judgment is a bit impaired and there are too many options...so let me save you a little trouble: you want the kalfsvleeskroket. Not only does it have the crispiest crust of any croquette you've ever had, but the veal ragout inside that glorious bread-crumb shell is also the gooiest, tastiest treat you've ever tasted. I had a 1.5 euro dinner out of a vending machine and loved it. Febo is awesome if you're a sociophobe (like me), like street food (like me), and are always looking for cheap dining options (like me). Simply insert 1.5 euros (croquette) or 2.5 euros (burger) to release the magic hatch and take out your hot food from it's little deposit box. I've tried the beef croquette and one that has peanut sauce in it, and the latter is superior by far. The convenience and presentation of the food was somewhat reminiscent of 7-11 back in the US, but don't let that put you off--this stuff isn't sitting there for hours, but re-filled by someone on the other side of the machines, much like how a mailman fills P.O. boxes. *Ask for mustard and/or chili sauce behind the counter. *Have exact change at hand, as the machine doesn't seem to provide change. read more

Oh my gosh, this place cracks me up. It's something between fast food and vending machines and really just so unique you've gotta try it. The food comes out piping hot, which is fantastic! I found it really tasty though I'm sure it's also veeery unhealthy, but then again, that's fast food for ya. I didn't know what to get, so I went for the kalfsvleeskroket and it turned out to be really good! This is the best and most convenient fast food I have come across. When in Amsterdam, and you partake in what is offered in the local coffee shops, you may find yourself wondering around viewing this awesome city through glazed eyes. Eventually you will get hungry, and you probably wont want to deal with anyone behind a counter in your paranoid state. Febo is your place. Walk on in and check out all the different selections behind the small glass doors. Make your pick and put your money in the slot. Take your tasty fried selection out and your done. So easy. Why am I so excited to write a review of a burger vending machine joint? Yes, you heard right - Febo is a giant burger vending machine. They sell other fast-food type stuff, too. I saw a similar joint on the Food Network - but that place was located in NY. So when I stumbled across Febo, I got a little giddy. I must admit. Thus, my generous 4-star rating. The idea of beinng able to spend less then 3 euros for lunch in Europe should make anyone giddy with excitement. Also, everything is made fresh even though it's technically a giant vending machine - we were told that no item is out longer than 20 minutes. And if you don't like what they have on display, you can order from the larger menu. Under 3 euros AND made fresh? That gets four stars from me. There are no seats, but you really don't need any. Your food is served in a paper tray and the condiments are out on the counter. You do need exact change, and they have a change machine in every Febo to help you out. And I realize everything tastes better after a few drinks, so in case you're wondering, YES - I was sober when I ate here. Although I bet it tastes a-freakin-mazing after a night of pub-hopping ;) This particular location is just down the street from Rembrandt Square. So you can take your grub to one of their outdoor tables and take in the scenery. read more

I think I'm in love. On a walking tour around Amsterdam, our guide recommended we try FEBO. As other reviewers have noted, it's vending-machine style food - but served hot. You place your coins in the machine, select any of the items in that row and pull the handle to retrieve your delicacy. From what I've read online, this is probably the only really uniquely Dutch food you will find. I choose kalfsvleeskroket, which the menu said had veal in it. It was AMAZING. Crunchy on the outside, salty on the inside. It was like eating a thick, fried stew. For those of you from the US, imagine condensed cream of mushroom soup, onions, and meat, squirted out of a tube, rolled in breadcrumbs, and placed in deep frier. These belong at every county and state fair. I imagine FEBO would be great after a trip to a coffee shop, but honestly I enjoyed mine as an afternoon snack after a long day of walking. read more

The Dutch have perfected fried gravy. Yep, the little fried snacks FEBO has or any Dutch "frituur" for that matter are great places after one is heading back home. There's a whole slew of frituur's throughout the city. My fav, the "patatje oorlog" (fries of war) where they put mayo, curry sauce, diced onions and peanut butter sauce all on top of your fries. Maybe it was due to some outside circumstances but in the wee hours of the AM, Febo was like a dream come true! I mean, there we were standing there and all this food was right there for us to grab out of the boxes. Gotta love it. So the end result was that we tried multiples of every single item that they had, plus the friendly worker cooked us up a whole batch of fried chicken on top of everything else. Cheeseburger from a vending machine? Don't mind if I do! I know this restaurant concept is already popular in cities such as NYC, Tokyo etc. but we don't have one (yet) at home so I had to try. The food is actually cooked fresh behind the "machine" in a prep kitchen, so don't be afraid of eating a stale burger. Items range from burgers to fried croquettes with meat filling. Prices are cheap for Euro standards, about 2.2-2.5 Euros for a burger. BTW, the vending machine don't give change but there is a change machine in the store. They also have fries that are made to order. Was it the best meal I had in Amsterdam? No way. But it'll get you by if you're looking for a quick snack and short on cash. read more

You really want this? Then you must be drunk. The food is cheap, greasy and utterly gross. But when the restaurants shut down in A'dam and you've been imbibing at the pubs, Febo is an easy fix for your drunken-stupor hunger. Just go to the vending wall, stick in your euros, open the magic box and retrieve your deep fried something. Tip: smother it with mayo to make it palatable - it's what the Dutch do. Enjoy. read more

Honestly...what is not to love about fast food out of a vending machine type system where you put money into the slot next to the food item you want to buy and open the door and you are served. It's weird and whacky and kitschy but totally fun and worth the experience if nothing else. Sure, it's greasy and cheap and not that awesome tasting but it's cheap and fast and open 24/7. Its the perfect post drinking pit stop on your walk home. Some of my favorite memories from Amsterdam involved going out to party and then hitting up Febo on the way home. I stumbled into one of these places in Amsterdam way back in the 70's and fell in love with the croquttes...I had almost no money and ended up eating at least one of my meals here my entire stay...I went back to Amsterdam recently and was thrilled to see that not only are the (automats) FEBOS still there but there are alot more of them and they are just as good as I remembered....The only other fast food treat I can recommend whole heartedly are the felafel stands that seem to be on every corner all over town...Ask around and find out which is a good one and fall in love with felafel...Watch how the regulars top them and copy what they do..Watch out for the tiny green peppers...They are HOT but I got addicted to them and tortured myself with them over and over on my last trip...I did eat in real sit down restaurants this last trip too but what I remember the most are the FEBOS and the felafel stands...
