I called American Eagle because the rollers had fallen off my garage door. They had been over to…read moreservice the door about two years previously. Instead of checking out everything it turned out a cable was loose. They had installed incorrectly two different sizes of springs, there had been a gap under one side of the door, so no adjustments were made. The door is still slammed heavily when it closed. But the serviceman said that was fine. I asked if any more oil should be used. He said oh yes, you should use lithium grease once a year. The garage door persisted slamming, so anticipating more breakage I called another service. This fellow said the springs were completely working on very bare tread and needed to be readjusted so he had to move the pole to fix the springs accordingly, replace broken brackets because of the slamming, re-oil certain places and use exactly the right oil in the right places because there were three different kinds of oil that should be used. Additionally, this second serviceman cleaned parts of it because they were super gunked up. I mean, massively, unbelievably corroded and gunked over - due to not being cleaned - maybe not ever. Who knew? Apparently, this had been overlooked by American Eagle.

They came out for a free estimate we agreed on a price and supplies were ordered. When they came to install everything there was 1 minor fitment issue. He didn't try to make it work or come up with excuses, he said flat out I don't know how it happened but I blew a measurement somewhere. He got the new section and was back 2 days later to finish it. It's not all about having it right the first time, every company will have a problem from time to time and it's nice to know when it does happen that these guys will rectify it quickly and without hassle. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to anyone.

She wasn't very interested and in fact told me I should ask the woodworker I know to make a drawer box for me instead of her company -- A MEDALLION CABINETRY DEALER -- ordering one for me. Uh, no, YOU'RE the dealer of this brand of cabinetry, that's why I'm calling you. In my last email I asked her about ordering one. NEVER HEARD BACK. Her attitude was lackadaisical at best. Apparently cabinet dealers only want to work with you if you buy an entire kitchen or bath from them. Otherwise, they have no time for you. Fortunately for me, I found another dealer who was more than happy to help me with my one drawer dilemma.

Upon signing both contracts, we provided a deposit of $11,670.00. By September we started getting concerned, because no work was getting scheduled and no preliminary steps were taking place (e.g., each contact was initiated by us, we did not see the drawings for the porch nor did an architect contact us or visit the house). This concern prompted us to investigate the situation and on September 13th we contacted the city's Department of Buildings. We found out that no paperwork was filed with the city for the porch permit. We also found out that Joseph of the North Shore was not a licensed general contractor or a home repairman. Only contractors licensed with the city can apply for permits and conduct business in the city, and Joseph was neither. At that point we terminated both contracts with Joseph of the North Shore and asked for a full refund of our deposit. We are writing this on March 23, 2014 and we still have not seen a penny of our deposit returned to us. For approximately five months the consumer fraud division of the attorney's general office has been mediating the return of our deposit. Through his lawyer, Joseph has agreed to return our full deposit, but only on the condition that we take down our review of his business on Angie's List and sign a document that would guarantee that we never discuss the details of our engagement with him in public domain. So he is not only withholding over $11K for the work that he did not do and was not licensed to do to begin with, he is stipulating demands in exchange for our own money. We refused his demands and again requested a full refund. Joseph's next lawyer, Lester Ottenheimer of Buffalo Grove, has replied to us and this is what he said: "In light of the fact that you will not agree to sign a mutual release nor a retraction of the false publications you made in exchange for payment, the only thing you will be receiving from my client is a lawsuit".
