This review is long overdue. All of the veterinarians and staff at Fern Hill are extraordinary to say the least. Cody, a rescued Great Pyrenees, was our "Million Dollar Dog", full of kindness and gentleness. He had many health issues, some strange and some not. I switched to Fern Hill Veterinary Care for my dog, following having taken multiple cats & dogs to another "chain" vet clinic for decades who shares it's name with a certain freeway in the Portland, OR area. The reasons were two-fold: 1) Said "chain" clinic, was virtually impossible to get appointments scheduled at. 2) Said "chain" clinic not only charged a lot more $$$ for everything, but constantly and consistently trying to up-sell. Fern Hill was a breath of fresh air! Less-expensive (although not the cheapest option I had explored), they offered a level of professionalism that I hadn't witnessed at the other veterinary clinic in 10+ years, never tried "upselling" me on unnecessary services, especially when it came time to discuss end of life for my dog, and upon hearing about my dog's crossing the rainbow bridge, made a donation to Fences for Fido in honor of my dog. (While said other place offered condolences upon having numerous pets having passed, just the obligatory verbal condolences -- of which nothing wrong with that, but I thought this was really touching by Fern Hill). read more

This is the first time I've ever thought to do a review in this format, but once my mom mentioned leaving a review, I realized it was the most raw and honest thing I could possibly do. If they changed her personality forever, I am going to be extremely upset. Mostly because there is NOTHING we can do about it. We had a cat once who was given a piece of a food from a kitchen table, and he was never the same ever again. The vet kept calling her "food motivated" but the thing is, she never was before this moment. I felt like I didn't have the power to say anything because she was the "expert." I will never make this mistake again with my baby. Please Ms. Vet, GET CONSENT before you give someone else's animal treats like this. You DID NOT ask for our permission, and we felt trapped and silenced by your nervous energy and non stop talking. Even if you are the expert, that doesn't give you the right to override how other people choose to raise their pet, or assume they want your opinion. I just like them. Vet care is expensive, but I didn't feel pressured. I felt supported in my decisions for my cats.

First and last time I will visit this place all due to the veterinarian we specifically worked with. I usually go to happy valley vet hospital (literally across the street) but they could not get me in same day / ER visit and recommended to come here. My cat I had brought in was not moving much for 24 hours and was clearly in pain/ uncomfortable. The FIRST thing the veterinarian did when she walked in was "that's the fattest cat I've ever seen" I was absolutely in shock that is the first thing you say to an owner of a sick pet especially as a first time/ new patient/ family. Yes, my cat is a large cat and has been happy and health for most of his 7 year life. His weight which I later found out from calling my usual vet had NOTHING to do with him being sick. We started off with recommending some tests, fluids and X-rays. After talking it over with my partner we decided to go with the blood test first (my very first cat I ever had ended up having kidney failure which is found via blood work and my current cat was displaying the same symptoms) then an x ray then fluids if needed. The veterinarian immediately shut down my request to do blood work first and then gas lit me into doing fluids and anti nausea medication before we even got the blood work back because my cat "clearly needed something to help him feel better". After her making me feel absolutely worthless for even suggesting to not do these things before the blood work came back they dedicated to go ahead and do the fluids and medication (which by the way did not help one bit) At this point my cat had been up and down off the exam table, poked multiple times to do tests and add fluids with the medication he was exhausted and was just laying in the middle of the floor. After 15 minutes the veterinarian came back and said my cat's kidney blood work was absolutely off the charts and would not be livable and immediately recommended to put him down before I could even ask any questions like how, or why this is happening or options to try to make him better. At this point I'm at a loss for words, I am obviously crying with this news while trying to navigate if I should end the life of my fur baby at just 7 years old. The veterinarian said he may have a blockage in his urinary track or in his kidneys and said we could do X-rays/ ultrasound (which is more money to do) to try to see but even finding a blockage would cost about 3-4k just do clear. She then called blue pearl (24 hour ER vet) for my guidance on what they suggest if we dedicated to go there afterwards. The staff then rolled in an ultrasound machine and the veterinarian then again said "he's so fat it's hard to see anything". It took every ounce of me to not speak up and tell her these comments are unnecessary and flat out rude. Ultimately the veterinarian could not see a blockage. After about an hour of my partner and I going back and worth coming to a decision to finally put my baby down due to 24 hour ER visits with fluids running about 2k a night with a small chance that would save him. While getting set up to put my cat down I was obviously extremely emotional and crying yet again, the exam rooms have paper thin walls and we could hear every single conversation and other pet in every room even the waiting room/ receptionist desk. (Mind you we weren't even in the first exam room) it felt so wrong to be sitting there holding back crying in fear I would ruin someone else's exam with a healthy pet. When signing the final estimate break down I felt I had to speak up as I felt pressured into doing the $300+ medication and fluids before we were able to make an informed decision. They did decide to remove that from the bill which was appreciated but would have liked an apology at minimum. After everything was said and done, the medication had been given to my baby to put him down the veterinarian came in one last time asking if we were ready to give up his body. I wasnt ready but felt rushed to get out of there as if we were holding up a room for too long. I will point out that EVERY single other veterinarian/ assistant/ tech that assisted us was absolutely amazing and actually treated my family with dignity and respect through the entire process start to finish. More specifically Becca's impact on my family will never be forgotten. Fern Hill is absolutely lucky to have a person like Becca working for them. I will forever be grateful for the rest of the team members and everything they did for Turbo. When leaving the room my partner and I specifically requested Becca to be the only person to call us once Turbos paw prints had arrived and were ready for pick up which she honored. Thank you Becca, your are an absolute angel. The veterinarian who we worked with should not be in a business with the public especially when sickness/ death is a common topic. The lack of empathy, compassion and just awareness was absolutely sickening. read more

We recently experienced the medical decline of our 13-year-old cat. Our vet listened to my wife and gave us options. In the end, we decided it was in our kitty's best interest to put him down. The doctor and staff did a great job at making us feel comfortable with the process, reserving a room for our last moments with him, and showing so much care for both our kitty and us. read more

I made the switch over from a 5-6 year vet to Fern Hill. My first visit was very pleasant. My anxious dog had to be muzzled but the vet had offered peanut butter within the muzzle which really distracted her and helped her anxiety. Thank you (and sorry) to the staff who had to clean up all the peanut butter on the ground when we left. I did see reviews of how this establishment upsells you on treatments and things that are unnecessary but I declined on some and there were no concerns/comments that made me feel like I was being forced. Dr. Larson & her staff were amazing! I was able to get a same day appointment for my service dog who injured his toe/toe nail. The office returned my voicemail minutes after they opened! They accommodated us by doing the procedure in the room so he didn't have to be separated from me, noticed he had a slower than normal heart rate & took extra precautions to ensure he could safely go under anesthesia. He was given a blanket to lay on, treats for being such a good boy & helped me load him back up into my car..he's over 100 lbs. The team was so tentative, positive & patient. I first came to Fern Hill when one of our fur babies had an ear infection. Our regular vet office couldn't fit us in for 3 wks and didn't offer any other options. Have you ever had an ear infection? Or worse, a child with an ear infection? They hurt like hell and can't wait 3 wks! I called Fern Hill and got an appt for the next day. Wow! This is a nice office. Very relaxed and not at all chaotic. We immediately switched to this vet practice. That was about a year ago. A few months ago, another of our doggies needed an urgent care appt. Although they could not see her that day, they sent me a list of urgent care clinics. That was very helpful, and I truly appreciated it. We Highly recommend Fern Hill Veterinary Care! Just 3 weeks ago our 7.5 year old bulldog Nala was bloated, not eating and not acting herself. Our regular vet couldn't see her for another week and she obviously couldn't wait that long. I went down a list of veterinary offices within our area, Fern Hill was 12th on the list of distance from us and the first to say they could see her the same day. We scheduled the appointment and from the second we walked in everyone was so friendly and treated us like family. Nala needed blood work and X-rays to start which determined emergency surgery. They were able to do surgery the same day, she stayed over night at a separate hospital for IV antibiotics and close observation. Fern Hill checked in with the overnight hospital the next morning to check on Nala and again called me to check in over the next couple days to make sure she was doing well with recovery. They stayed in touch through her entire recovery. We came home from our appointment this morning after having her staples removed and I have to say, in the most awful situation to be in, we had the best experience possible. Nala was so excited to see everyone and loved all of the attention she got while we were there today. I knew Nala was in good hands there and we're thankful to have her home and healthy! Their staff is all so incredibly friendly, you can see their love for your fur babies, they went above and beyond for our family. They were comforting in a time where I was upset and also scared. Fernhill, while unequivocally an extraordinarily low quality veterinary practice, with little to show in empathetic, modern practice (i.e. they attempt to medicate fidgety pets before using treats, multiple staff members, etc) - also operate w/ zero moral or professional integrity. Service - it is challenging to word this in a way such that it is not read with implicit exaggeration, but Fernhill is pretentiously "women first" but clearly "pets last". Markups are egregious, with simple Zofran being upcharged 3x the industry standard. Furthermore, they try to upsell significantly expensive services from the get-go, rather than incrementally exploring and experimenting. For reference, our first vet visit with a simple complaint of a cat not eating was initially quoted to over $1k, and the onus was on us to pick apart the needful services and push back. Preying upon the desires of pet parents to be good to their pets and weaponizing a time of great emotional distress to upsell needless services is morally reprehensible ( not to mention, if it was humans, literally illegal). Service staff is generally polite, but the owner Alicia is someone you do not want to work with in any personal or professional context. Shady practice - not to scope in on the aforementioned insane markups and upsell practices, but they also have a truly insane method of dealing with unhappy customers. Rather than offer a path to resolution, ways to prevent this concern, basically anything - they mass report google/yelp reviews to maintain a pristine rating all while they deceive unknowing customers. In general, Fernhill is a place where you can be sure to pay an exorbitant markup on shoddy service and their "money first, pets last" implicit motto shines through clearly. I think I may have found my forever vet. I have had a bunch of bad experiences where I feel like the vet doesn't care and just wants to upsell services my dogs don't need. I found Fern Hill from a friend. I have to drive 10 miles but so worth it. My golden retriever randomly tore off her toenail and I tried to find an urgent care and everything was full. I called Fern Hill and Heather answered and said I could bring her in but it would be an extra fee for immediate service and talked me through how to care for her so I could wait for an appointment for a few days. Then when we arrived we were greeted so warmly and my golden is super anxious... they got us in a room right away and everyone greeted her first... they talked to her in a way I've never seen. Erin the vet tech was so lovely and Dr. Z was so careful with her and I just can't say enough good things. I feel like we were both truly cared for. Thank you Fern Hill! read more

We adopted a street dog from Mexico from a local rescue organization, and were offered a free initial visit at one of several vet clinics, and chose Fernhill. We did not intend to establish care there, as the clinic is not close to our home. The visit was a great experience, from scheduling to the vet techs, to the vet. The techs and vet were kind, patient and spent a lot of time with our terrified pup who had only been in the US for 3 weeks. If you want compassionate, knowledgeable folks caring for your animal kiddos then I highly recommend! They are a smaller practice which brings thoughtful, face to face interactions. We brought our two little dogs; one with an appointment and the other just to tag along and get acquainted as he's a shy barky little dude. They were so great with them and gave all the cookies and pets! They came at the appointment with professionalism and a little humor. The front desk staff were welcoming, technicians were AWESOME and Dr. Downes listened carefully and was just amazing. This was our first time here and it's now where we'll take all our pups. I live in Gresham, have two 9yr old cats - the vets in Gresham all have super poor ratings- I have been to a few and I just don't care for them, I deal with it since I'm just updating shots. BUT I got a 8 week old puppy and I was in need of a better vet so I took him to Fern Hill. I was really impressed by my visit today. The office is clean, the staff is nice, the Dr. (Dr. Downs) was super welcoming and easy to talk to. Since my puppy is so little I had a list of 5 things I wanted to cover - I felt all my concerns and questions were answered and I didn't feel rushed. I didn't feel like things were a money grab (which is an issue with Gresham vets). They were up front about costs, made sure I was aware of the cost before proceeding. They did try to sell the pet insurance, but I'm sure this is a partnership program that they are required to talk about - but I didn't feel pressured. They gave me 1 month free and an info packet, they told me other programs exist and to do my own research on them but in the meantime my puppy is covered. The free month auto cancels if I don't end up signing up (which is nice, because it's not something I have to remember to cancel, nor do I have to worry about random charges). First visit. So far so good. I hope this is our forever place. It's impossible to find somewhere to go! Everyone is full or has terrible reviews. They were able to get me in on a Friday for an emergency so we were very grateful for that. The staff is so friendly! We have a super fickle Siamese and they weren't deterred by that at all. From the very nice receptionist, amazing tech and Vet... we are pleased. So patient and kind w/ our weird little kitty. The facility is a drop off service. So it felt a little different but nice that your not sitting for hours. We may have preferred a face to face w/ the vet like a traditional practice but when she called she was very nice, knowledgeable and professional. It was about 190.00 for same day emergency visit. $300 for bloodwork and urine samples so close to 600.00 after we added 2 vaccines. We would go back for sure. So glad to have found such a great place. They all just seem happy to be there, great mojo! Brand new practice so it's clean and nice. read more

We love Fern Hill Vet care! our cat had been intermittently vomiting and had lost weight. So in June, 2022, we brought her in to our regular vet in Happy Valley off Sunnyside Rd. They did blood tests (and got them mixed up with a dog) but after the delay, said that the readings were normal. They were unconcerned about weight loss or anything and gave us no treatment plan or followup. Then it was August after the cat was still sick and had lost another pound of weight. We took her back there. they repeated the blood tests, still "normal" they said suggest ultrasound but still no treatment. Our 11 pound cat was now down to 7 pounds! That vet never called us to see how our kitty was or to schedule ultrasound or to offer any kind of treatment plan and now I was googling her symptoms trying to maybe treat her ourselves! I was losing faith in that (our regular) vet so then my husband found the new Fern Hill Vet clinic in Happy Valley. (Years ago we had also used the clinic near New Seasons but then they sold to a corporation and were all about money, and they would order every test in the world and charge $500 + every time we went in.) WOW! Fernhill was amazing! From the moment we walked in both we and our kitty were cared for! Dr Zambelli at Fern Hill took one look at our baby with concern, and immediately began going over the previous lab records from our other vet ...while communicating with us about the results. Those results were NOT normal! The other vet was wrong and never read their own test results nor communicated the bad results to us. they completely dropped the ball. Our cat was very sick, weak and starving and it was affecting her organs! After issuing meds for vomiting, Fern Hill Dr Z ordered an ultrasound for the very next day, then did "targeted" blood labs again which would be sent to their special lab. Also they infused our cat because of dehydration. Next day after no cancer (only inflammation) was found on ultrasound, Dr Z called with the plan and sent kitty home with two other meds. In two days our baby was eating everything in sight and no vomit, normal stools! Her B 12 is low on the lab report per Dr Z but we can go back to Fern Hill for shots. Also Dr Zambelli called us at home to check in and see how our cat was doing.....she really cares! We feel certain that Fern Hill has saved our cat's life and are just glad we switched vets to Dr Zambelli! Thank goodness this wonderful clinic came to Happy Valley when we needed a good one! You never know how good a vet clinic is until your pet is sick.Then you really find this out! Thank you Fern Hill! read more

We brought our dog in on a Saturday due to not eating, vomiting, & diarrhea. From the receptionist to the vet techs, to Dr. Roberts, everyone was fantastic. Communication was stellar and they took such great care of our dog. Very clean facilities too. We had a clear treatment plan, sent with info, and notes emailed to us. I have brought pets over the years to probably 10-15 different veterinarian clinics and I couldn't speak more highly of Fern Hill vet. read more

She is such a kind and compassionate person and those qualities are what make her a phenomenal veterinarian!!
