In a perfect world, I would hope that no one would need to avail themselves of their service and our beloved animals would live with us forever. When that is no longer the case and tough decisions need to be made, we had an excellent experience with Compassionate Care to say goodbye to our pup. Let me start by saying that every administrative and customer service interaction was timely, clear, and concise. The last thing you want in this situation are delays and confusion. Once I reached out through the contact link on their website, the email response with details about their different services happened within 10 minutes. An intake call to make arrangements for a euthanasia visit at our home was answered by a human and only took a few minutes. They recommend making a reservation 48-hours in advance, but we were put on a wait-list and we moved up our reservation when things opened up. I appreciate that you can reschedule (with four hours advance notice) as well. They have a variety of services, Eco-friendly cremation, and memorial pieces. Everything was arranged in advance, including payment through their web portal, so when the vet arrived for the appointment it was all about our boy and his (and our) comfort. Dr. Wilson clearly walked us through the process, gave us time to say goodbye, provided options, and was a wonderful partner in the process. Cremation is done at a facility in N. Portland, but they have the option of picking up the cremains in Oregon City which was more convenient for us. Having gone through this experience with another pet where we took them to the vet's office, I would highly recommend this option for the pet's comfort. It just felt better saying goodbye in a familiar space surrounded by love. read more

My experience was okay. I made a most difficult decision to let my beloved cat go after a long weekend spent almost entirely in ER trying to figure out why he would no longer eat and why his eye was swelling shut. And an even longer two or three weeks before that fighting to get him to eat. Like others here, Kevin was closer to me than my human family. I was busy with the doctors in ER so my partner called in to make the appointment to ease my stress. He said I was primary contact, but it was difficult to make that clear all the way until the day so communications were continually going to him. Not a big deal in the overall picture, but it didn't make the experience any easier. This was my cat for 8 years before I met my partner and while he loved my baby, I was the one with the lifelong bond. The doctor showed up within the time window allotted. We both found her a little cold. I felt like we were just a job and everything was done by number. My BF picked up my cat and carried him to me, but the doctor said we should do paperwork first which resulted in me putting him down after building up to do what I deemed impossible. I was emotional and crying. This really should somehow be handled before the visit. There were corrections to be made on the form. I was about to lose my baby and this only made me aware that I was filling out his death warrant. I am utterly heartbroken. I know holding your baby until the last minute is catharsis and closure, but I found it traumatizing. His passing was peaceful at least. Everyone's goodbye will be unique, and my example will not necessarily match what others experience. Everyone we spoke to was professional. I just wasn't feeling the compassion. read more

I made an appointment for two days out, but ended up needing to reschedule for sooner due to health decline and they were more than happy to be able to do a same-day appointment for no extra fees. The person who came was right on time, so polite and even noticed that we take our shoes off before entering and did the same. I really appreciated their compassion and awareness. The process was very simple and they gave us plenty of time to grieve and say our goodbyes and get our last cuddles in before and after the sedative and euthanasia took effect. This is a review no one ever wants to write. But here we are. We had to put down our beautiful dog on Sunday and were thankful to get an evening appointment with Compassionate Care. We were greeted at the door by the Vet, Josie Gold, and she turned out to be our angel. She was extremely patient and guided us through the process and told us exactly what could happen and what we should expect. After a very patient meet and greet with our dog in which treats were involved she gently gave him a sedative shot which he barely noticed. Then at the appropriate time she professionally and lovingly managed the application of IV line and then let the rest of the medicines finally relieve his suffering. We pet and talked to our dog throughout the whole process. We held his big paw. Then we cried. It's not easy. One of the hardest things we'd ever done. But Josie assured us that we'd made the right decision at the right time. I can't say enough good things about the way this was handled. My wife and I had to make the very difficult decision to euthanize our dog Pogi (means handsome in Tagalog). He had suffered for several years with environmental and food allergies. We had gone through several medications, food trials, home remedies and even tried different vets to find some relief for his itchy skin. A decision made in consultation with our long time veterinarian. Our vet was willing to perform the service in their office, but we wanted to do it at home. The individual I spoke to said the cat was not terminal and the cost of treatment and medication regimen was irrelevant. The said they would need to contact my veterinarian, review our cats medical records and get back to me. I found a far more understanding and compassionate provider to help us. I can't properly express how much Dr. Marie's empathy and expertise comforted us during one of the most difficult experiences we had as a family. Our cat had been with us 14 years before she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. It was a matter of days between diagnosis and the day we said goodbye. She was more than a pet, she was our family member. I'm so glad she could spend her last hours at home with us where she felt safe. She would've felt so anxious if we had taken her to the clinic to be euthanized. Dr. Marie treated her with such love and tenderness, you would've thought she knew our cat as well as her own. I can share a long story about my little mutt Fiona's final months and days, but I'll keep it short. My Fiona had been rapidly losing weight since December due to kidney failure/cancer. She wouldn't even eat peanut butter, which to me was a clear sign to my wife and I that we would have to make that tough decision on "when". They gave us time to think it through before deciding on when we felt was the best time to euthanize our suffering mutt. I'm sad just writing about this right now. Come the day, Monday May 1st 2023, Marie from Compassionate Care arrives at our door. She showed respect for my "no shoes in the house" policy, as well as wore a mask as she explained she was recently around sick kids. I admire the fact that Marie was truthful and mindful of others. She explained the process and went over the payment ($600+) details. As well as the post-euthanazation, cremation services, and pick up. While I was listening to her, I was just thinking about how glad I am that Fiona will pass at home with us versus at the vet; She would be at the vet shivering away with anxiety. It's not how I would want Fiona to leave this world. She was such a loving little brat, but gave us unconditional love over the years! Fiona was already tired and sleepy that we proceeded to go though with it. Marie gave us plenty of time to spend with Fiona during the two stages of injection and relaxation. Marie also handled Fiona with care, and my Fiona passed away quietly and peacefully. She was placed in a blanket into a small basket. So I carried my mutt one last time to Marie's car. All done in about 30 minutes. No more pain Fiona! Love ya mah il' Nana! We were told the cremation process can take two weeks, but we were called in about 10 days that Fiona's ashes were ready. We went to the facility, and her ashes were dropped off via curve-side drop-off. I highly recommend Compassionate Care for those thinking about your pet's final stages. She brought in a beautiful basket and blanket to take Fiona's body out to her car and Ron decided he wanted to walk her out. We both deal with death, grief and closure so differently and Marie respected our space the entire time we were making decisions. It took less than 10 minutes for the 1st bout of opiates and anesthesia to run its course through Fiona's little 14 lbs body and the final goodbye was within seconds albeit heartwrenching seemed painless. I can't thank Compassionate Care enough for how they handled when I had to say goodbye to my cat, Leo, yesterday. Leo had late stage CHF but we'd hoped to extend the quality of his life for a few more weeks. His decline was so sudden and severe that it caught me off guard. He struggled to breathe, and there was nothing the vet could do for him bc his heart was too big to even drain the fluid from around it. I knew I didn't want Leo to die at a sterile emergency clinic; he'd always hated the vet and as an anxious kitty I didn't want his heart to give out just getting there. Someone had recommended Compassionate Care to me awhile ago after using it with their pet and I'm glad I found them. I made an appointment for 3p the following day so I'd have time to spend with Leo in the morning before I said goodbye, but later that night his breathing got so labored I couldn't bear to make him suffer until the following afternoon. We called at 10p and asked Stacey (who answered both my calls and was very kind) if we could move the appointment to earlier, and they were so understanding and moved us to the 8am-10a slot. Our vet was named Deborah and was so gentle and soft-spoken. Never rushed us and showed so much compassion and kindness throughout the process. Waited for my go ahead on everything. Even gently petted the edge of Leo's ear as he passed and whispered to rest in peace little one, bc my husband and I were so sad and crying we couldn't watch his last breaths. The whole process was so much more gentle than I'd even imagined. I've never had to pts a pet before and I was honestly terrified of it being traumatic. But it really did seem like he'd just gone... to sleep. They offer creamation services or to leave the pet with you, so that part is as easy on the owner as they can make it. I'm so glad we had this option for Leo. I think this was the kindest and most peaceful way he could go and even though I miss him so much, I'm incredibly grateful this is how it happened and this service does a wonderful job. I imagine it can't be easy to make a living putting down pets and dealing with owner grief, and the staff of Compassionate Care deserve all the thanks and respect for taking that on so our animals don't suffer as much. It's been 36 days since my first Love moved along from this place. That harrowing day that ended in a cyclone of release, devastation, and grief has paved the way for my favorite loss story. I've had a ton of death in my life: suicides and cancer the most frequent. And of course, cancer took my Dexter as well. He lived a life I was honored to protect for almost 12 years. And then he was gone. He was mostly gone the day before he died. His spirit was ready to go. His body was ready to be done. On February 26, 2024 I had to made the call I always dreaded for my sweet little cat Marshmallow. I have known that she had kidney disease but it was managed well until this past October when things started to look very grim. She rallied back and we were able to give her 5 more wonderful, very fulfilling months but on Monday, February 26th, when I woke up, I knew that her health had changed and I had changed and I needed to let my pretty girl go. Writing this now is still so painful and it is hard to see through my tears but I am forever grateful for the compassion and empathy that Dr. Casey Choate showed to Marshmallow and our whole family that afternoon. I know that that day, Marshmallow was done and her passing in my arms at home while I sang "The Teddy Bear Picnic" was truly the best way for it to happen. Compassion, understanding, patience, and love were provided throughout the entire process with Compassionate Care, starting with scheduling her in-home euthanasia over the phone, to meeting with Dr. Jessika Lais on our front porch to go over the necessary paperwork, to the procedure itself, and finally relinquishing custody of my long-time companion to a "stranger." At no part of the process was I rushed. They gave me the gift of grieving, and processing, in my own way. Their comments and condolences were never trite and, in fact, were exactly the opposite, which not only offered comfort, but also validation, and pure love. Dr. Jessika, in particular, was exactly the angel both Sienna and I needed to help us make this transition. I cannot say enough positive things about her, but I feel truly blessed that she was sent on this specific mission. Sienna's passing was swift and peaceful, and I don't believe a traumatic trip to our vet's office would have ever been able to achieve the beautiful experience we actually had. While I recognize this may be considered a luxury by some, I was so impressed by every thoughtful detail that I can't imagine anyone not opting to let go of their furry family member in a similar loving fashion. Compassionate Care not only has my stamp of approval, they will have all of my future recommendations, and my return business (though, I hope that will be far in the future).
