Was my dogs vet since he was a puppy. The last four years ???? HORRIBLE service and a very " We don't care attitude. Refused to see my dog during covid. Then this morning I woke up to my pup whimpering in pain with anal bleeding. Call HIS vet and they refuse to see him. I asked if they knew of an emergency vet, was told to Google it. If I lived closer somebody would be getting punched in the face. My pup is 14 and going to die here at home in my arms in pain because of these people. Getting a lawyer tomorrow. Over the last several years, I've taken my 2 cats, a corn-snake, and most recently, my rabbit in for care and always been happy with the care, service, treatment and cost. Never felt pressured into care or products I didn't want and always felt I got clear, knowledgeable advice. Dr. Dahlquist has a dry sense of humor, as someone else noted, and it seems a few bad reviews here have interpreted that as condescending or even abusive, but I've never read it that way. I wrote a review about Gateway Veterinary Hospital before but I have to update and give some more praise. This place is awesome! I had my dogs teeth cleaned here and I am impressed at the level of professionalism and SAFETY. They screened my pooch very thoroughly before the anesthesia and they didn't have to remove any teeth! I was was super happy because I had been a bad owner and hadn't kept up with his dental care. Also, the vet tech (Rebecca?) was super helpful and provided us with so much discharge teaching--going above and beyond the basic post-anesthesia instructions to discussing his weight issue--my dog is a bit overweight to also preventing further dental problems. The prices are EXTREMELY competitive/reasonable, the vet, techs, front desk people are all very nice and helpful. I'm so thankful I found this place for all my pet care needs. read more

I recently was looking for a vet to take my rescue mama dog to. She was 58ish days pregnant and I wanted one final well check done prior to her whelping. I sent Gateway Vet Hospital an email, inquiring about their exams, fees and if they had any specials for new clients. After reading some great reviews online I figured that they would be a fantastic place to take my dog to! I got an email back stating that they do not do free initial exams and what they normally charge, and they recommended I go to Banfield. I absolutely do not like Banfield as I have had many bad experiences there and shared with Dr Dahlquist my experience there. I will quote our emails from here: Dr Dahlquist to me (after I stated my recent experience with Banfield, see my review on the one in West Linn/Lake Oswego area): You would not like us either. Science Diet is not "loaded with fillers" - there is dietary fiber -which you value in your breads, cereals and other sources - and likely pay extra for "an excellent source of fiber!". The "best" foods are not gluten free, grain free or corn free. There is a lovely Science article on dog genetics that discusses that wolves have 2 genes for carbohydrate metabolism and dogs have upto 30. RAW diets are universally cited as incomplete and hazardous by veterinary nutritionists (with an actual PhD in animal nutrition). AHAA (American animal hospital association) and the AVMA advise against. The grain free stuff is idiocy based on personal philosophy and no science or phylogenetic understanding of what dogs came from (think coyotes not wolves). I then replied stating that my dog had obvious allergies to the additives (corn, grain soy etc) and that feeding her RAW (with much help and support and dietary information from many people and resources) had turned her completely around. I then sent him information from the PetFoodAdvisor website regarding the ingredients to Science Diet. This was his response: Get off NaturalNews and Realpharmacy bull**** sites. Needless to say, I will NEVER be coming there with my animals. I was treated HORRIBLY by this vet and am shocked that he thinks he can get away with this!!! Granted, after he spoke so horribly to me I called him a bull headed jerk and other names, but this is absolutely ridiculous! Makes me wonder how he treats his clients behind closed doors. read more

I am very impressed with the doctor and the staff at Gateway Vet Hospital. I had a similar experience as Suzanne D. of Portland did. My ScardiCat became ill with a sinus infection which was becoming chronic. Dr. Dahlquist, as well as the entire staff treated me & him so well. He tried a few different meds and ran appropriate tests, but ScardiCats immune system was shutting down from an illness he had from some time... but until the Dr. told me about it, I did not know. All were so kind, and loving to ScardiCat. He pepped up when we had our visits, he didn't even look sick when he came in contact with the wonderful people at Gateway Vet Hospital. He would purr, and rub his scent on them, something I had not seen him do before at our other vet. I was given a discount on my first visit, and was happy to see they offer discounts to seniors. I was pleasantly surprised when Dr. Dahlquist also gave me free samples that also kept my costs down as I am on a limited budget. Dr, Dahlquist was recommended to me by a teacher at a local college who teaches vet assiting courses. Thank you Pamm! I too was pleasantly surprised to receive a memory stone, "In Loving Memory of Scardi Cat". I love how special they made ScardiCat feel... He truly felt the love from them all. The sympathy card was signed by each staff members which was really sweet. It is a bit of a drive for me, but I will return when my other animals need a good doctor to care for them. I went to Gateway because I was sick of the assembly-line service that my pets and I recieved at some of the larger chains. What a difference! With one doctor and a small staff, I really felt like they cared about my furry family. I'm sure that many people have touching stories like mine, with the loss of my cat Herman and the adoption of little Henrietta, but I want everyone to know that the staff at Gateway was gave excellent personal and quality care to my pets at both stages of life. Their prices are competitive with "the big guys," their medicine is outstanding, and the people have won my heart. I'll never bring my precious pets anywhere else. read more

My friend from the military had come with me, and as we left we were probably the only two trained killers the staff had ever seen crying like babies. For both exam fees, rabies shots, and to have blood work and diagnosis done on a lump on my one bully's back, and my other bully's breathing issue looked into, it cost me just about $190. The prices are reasonable, and the staff isn't trying to up sell you products, they only care about your animals health and well being. They will be our new permanent vet. This is the most unpleasant place I suffer to attend. First, the waiting room is always overheated. But most importantly, the unprofessional staff who work the front desk make me cringe with their interruptions, inability to create value, and paucity of critical thinking skills. Not the snazziest place, but the vet here (Dr. Dahlquist) handled my ill-tempered cat with aplomb. I hate taking my cat to the vet because he completely freaks out. He tried a few different meds, but Eddie's immune system was shutting down, from something he got into, possibly camping. This vet and his staff, was so kind, and loving to our dog. We just received a beautiful package containing a memory stone, special for Eddie. It says, "In Loving Memory of Eddie". We feel so grateful and spoiled to receive such a lovely item. Also the card that was mailed, with thoughts signed by every person that works at this clinic was included. The staff at the office is extremely friendly. I did have a bad experience when I got my dog Shorty fixed. They let me know that she might already be in heat in which case the procedure is double the price because the dog is more at risk (so they were going to charge me $240 instead of $110). They called me later that day after I dropped her off and let me know that she is in heat and the fee will be higher. I could hear my dog screaming in the background and the first thing she said to me is we have some bad news. Not such great service, my heart almost jumped through my throat. I paid the extra money and my dog ended up completely fine. Now three four months later I did get three months behind on my bill and they sent me to collections. I tried calling and offering to pay whatever necessary to bring it up to date (my card number had changed and I just kept forgetting to call them). However they are saying I need to pay for the full 12 months of the wellness plan before I can reestablish service. Even thought I only used seven months of it. So I need to pay the other 5 months for absolutely nothing at all and then setup a new plan for another twelve months? Needless to say that will not be happening. I will pay what I owe and be done and NEVER return. BEWARE! read more

I was a current client at Gateway Vet but am re-thinking that after our appointment 3/25/14. I had scheduled both our large dogs on the same day to update their vaccines. This is usual for our family and we also schedule yearly wellness exams this same way. We know a lot of Vets suggest every 6 mos but that's just not financially possible for us. The office sent reminder cards with the fees(19.95 each) printed right on them which was very helpful. When calling to set up the appointment I confirmed the amount due would be around 80.00 & the dogs would be there together, like always. We arrived, checked in & weighed our dogs on the scale in the lobby, 88.5 & 65.6 lbs. After being called into the opt the tech asked if we had any concerns, were they eating & drinking fine, took heart rate then said the Vet would be right in. I stopped her and said we were just here to update their vaccines today. She again said the Vet would be right in. Once the Vet entered the room he asked the same questions the tech had asked but started circling items on a "Work up sheet" & scribbled a lot of words down that I couldn't read. He did give the dogs their vaccines but then said they'd be right back with the "Work up." ??? I suggested to my daughter & her boyfriend to go ahead & take her dog home & I'd be right behind them. The Vet & tech returned with a bill for OVER 460.00 which I nearly fainted over and I'm not kidding. I explained what I'd expected to pay today & how I'd confirmed the amount extra. They left the room and I could hear how the Vet was talking about me to the techs in the back room. He made it sound like I was irresponsible & actually sounded angry at me. They returned to the room & I had a few words for him & how he'd jacked up the cost today. If this was a treatment plan for the future that was fine but I only had 90.00 in my budget for vaccines. He looked over his sheet of paper and left the room. I walked out & up to the front office where they were now giving me a bill for 183.70 closer to the 80.00 but still more then I could afford. I paid 90.00 I said I pay the rest after I got paid but wasn't happy with they way I'd been treated. The Vet walked away, the front office apologized but wanted my SS# which I refused to give. STAY AWAY from this Vet.... if you want to buy groceries for your family any time soon. read more
