There were several pretty ducks strolling on the green grass. It rained yesterday so everything was green and bright. It seemed like a safe place to walk and run. There were several others walking their dogs and some kiddos riding bikes. We walked along the river and saw the backside of a great looking bar/joint called Neighbors. There was nobody there seeing it was only about 10 am but it looks like a neat place.

Totally recommend if you are looking for something "cool" to do this summer. PS adults are allowed to get wet too.

There are two playgrounds that are designed to give a play area to children of all ages. The covered pavilion has picnic benches and is located between the playgrounds and the splash pad which gives you the best view of the entire park while your kids run around. The jewel of this park is the splash pad. I recommend bringing chairs and blankets to sit on as there are not any right near this area. The bathrooms are located right next to this spot which is great for changing your kids in. I suggest wearing water shoes if your kids will be running in and out of here, there are many "stickers" all around. I hope the city continues to bring more to the East Side of Buda. There are communities here that have been ignored but are thriving!

There is also a dinosaur themed play area for children and covered pavilions to have social gatherings. Shelter and pavilion reservations are required. The extra large shelter can accommodate up to 100 people. I came to this location specifically for the walking trail and to scope out the 'play for all abilities' dinosaur area. The highlights of the dinosaur area are: Wheelchair-accessible ramps and platforms: Now, children in wheelchairs can smoothly roll onto platforms and access various play structures without hindrance. Sensory play equipment: These are especially beneficial for children with autism or sensory processing disorders. Elements like tactile panels, sound tubes, and visually stimulating components allow kids to engage multiple senses as they play. Low-impact ground materials: The rubberized surface ground materials have been chosen to cushion falls and facilitate easy movement for all kids. Shaded areas: Recognizing that some children might have medical conditions that make them sensitive to the sun, several sections of the playground offer ample shade. I applaud the effort of the city to add an all ability play area as there are few within the city parks. We camped here spontaneously one weekend in February. The good: the trails are lovely! There are…read moremany miles and different terrains to explore. I love the pine trees and views from some of the trails. The campground is lovely as well. Very clean. Spaces are large. People are respectful. But... A big con is the traffic noise at night! We stayed in the Copperas Creek Camping Area, which is quite close to the road, so we expected some noise. But it was intense both noise. A loud, long crash woke me up in the middle of the night, with a second crash crashing into the debris from the first one. That whole incident kept me up for 2 hours. I don't know if the other campgrounds in the park are any better. The park is nestled in a populated area so I doubt it. But the trails and area are beautiful!! So I would definitely recommend for hiking!! Not so much tent camping... (maybe it's better in an RV?).

We stopped by Bastrop State Park on a whim while driving to Austin, and it ended up being a great…read moredecision. It's less than a 2-hour drive from Houston and under an hour from Austin, which makes it an easy add to a road trip. I especially appreciated that the entrance is right off Highway 71, so you're not wasting a bunch of time driving deep into back roads just to get to the park. We visited on a beautiful Saturday in January -- sunny and in the 50s, basically perfect hiking weather. While there are plenty of trees throughout the park, many of the trails are fairly exposed, so you get a lot of sun. Definitely bring sunscreen, even in cooler weather. The trails are wide and well-maintained, with sand and rocks laid down in many areas, making them easy to walk. The terrain is nicely hilly but nothing too difficult (we did about 4 miles total). One thing to note: trail signage is a bit limited, and it would be easy to get turned around and know where to turn. Thankfully, I had decent cell reception (T-Mobile) and was able to use Google Maps to track where we were. Parking was easy, the staff were friendly, and the landscape was beautiful. We used our Texas State Parks annual pass, which saved us the $15 entrance fee, and the entry process was quick and simple. The line of cars trying to get in was only 2. I'd love to come back in the spring when everything is blooming. Overall, a great stop if you want scenic views, manageable trails, and a convenient location. Highly recommend if you're on your way to Houston or Austin. There's also a Buccees just a few miles away!

The park has lots of playscapes and climbing structures, and you'll also get nice views of the tall buildings of downtown Austin. They do have an hourly pay-parking lot at the entrance, but it does fill up quickly. It's almost better to leave your car here and walk to Terry Black's. We only hung out at the hills and tunnels section of the park, which our 4yo son loved. They have several hills covered with artificial turf of varying heights that are fun to crawl, climb, or roll down. The tunnels through each hill will make you feel like a Hobbit in those LOTR movies.

The park is certainly geared more towards children, which is great! There's plenty of space in the playground area as well as picnic tables and a pavilion. As 2 adults in our mid 30s, we thoroughly enjoyed the length of the trail, as well as the detail in the sculpture quality, and the plaques along the way that provide historic descriptions of each exhibit. It's a fun place, though, is highly recommended bringing a child along as it would make the experience even better.

And bring a stroller -- it's gravel, most strollers can handle it. I made the mistake of carrying my 1-year-old (in a carrier) on the trail and was super tired. It's a decent amount of walking. Visitor's center has ample bathrooms and they're clean. They also have toys for sale -- lots of toys. Great curation of dino-themed merch. My one tiny complaint is the lack of a trash can on the trail. One mid-way would help (maybe a T-Rex head lid, for fun). I had a wrapper from a melted protein bar and had to carry it. Overall, really fun activity for kids at a reasonable price (2 and under are free).
