After paying a small fee to enter, we parked. The visitor's center has a small museum where you can learn all about the history of the park. It's a good way to kick things off. From there, you can hike around the park. Beyond getting a workout, you come across historical markers and other goodies along the way. Brewery ruins, a home, a statue, and more. You'll learn even more through this experience. I love these types of hikes: where you simultaneously learn and get a workout in.

This park is sadly under used and it's the perfect spot to stay the night and put your canoes into…read morethe water. This park/camping area is tucked away on a country road spotted with farms. Be cautious driving down the road though because there is a crazy Boston terrier that will run out in front of your car and not move; then proceed to chase your car down the street. When you pull in you will see a trailer that the guy who runs the park lives in and directly to the left there is 2 boxes. There are envelopes in one to place $5.00 in for the overnight camping or to park if you are just canoeing. On the front of the envelope is a parking pass to remove and put in your car window. There is nice flat areas with wide spaces for many tents. There is also park style grills and picnic tables scattered around. The bathroom is a bit yucky and doesn't have the flushing type toile if you know what I am saying. There is also a port a potty onsite. Be careful in the morning opening the door of the bathroom because there is plenty of mosquitoes lurking in there because the one piece of fly paper doesn't cut it. If you have 4 wheel drive there is a path down to the Colorado River to drop your canoe and coolers off. Otherwise I would just carry them down. It's not a heavily wooded campsite but it is very nicely manicured.

There are pavilions available and plenty of areas to sit down. The parking are was really good. There are several jungle gyms for the kiddos. The walking trail is well kept and free or holes or anything that will cause you to fall. I saw wildlife along the way. People were fishing, eating, walking, playing games, and just enjoying life. There were several park structures near the pavilion, from swings, slides, spider web jungle gyms. There were two buildings near that I believe you could rent out for parties. Bathrooms are a stones throw and were air conditioned and clean. We could see the skate park from where we were along with additional play areas, across the street you can see the splash pad. There is "story walk" trail you can take that leads to or from the Library situated at the top of the hill. Definitely take a stop at the carousal if it's open it's only a dollar a person to ride, and really quite a splendor to oh and ah over. Tons of shade, great place for a picnic, and to get some energy out. Can't wait to visit again with my family.

One of the trails we took was the overlook trail where there is a raised platform where you can see one of the lakes and at that time there were tons of birds on the water. Staff is nowhere to be seen. The bathrooms are dirty. My daughter went into the gift shop to purchase some fishing worms and they were all dead. The girl at the counter told her that dead worms were better than live worms because the smelled bad, but who wants to touch nasty, rotting worms? We had to go to the gas station down the road to buy minnows, which was out of the way and more expensive. People were drinking and partying loudly. It's no longer a nice quiet park to take your family to. The glamping tents have taken up too many camp spots which gives normal campers less spaces to rent. Management is trying to make this a park for rich yuppies and are forgetting the local folks make this park what it is. The water is too hot in the summer to swim. No playscape for small children, so small kids have nothing to do if the water is hot.

It allowed me to enjoy the walk while understanding more about Washington on the Brazos River. Got to see the famous Brazos River and imagine how life was or could have been. Washington, Texas could have been a bustling city like Austin. It was fun seeing the old life acted out in the exact place it happened. It was fun hearing from those playing the various roles all over the park. It's a nice and sacred part of Texas history. One can explore neighboring areas like Navasota or Chappell Hill for dinner. Was hoping to have dinner at Bevers in Chappell Hill but it was closed. It was an easy drive home. Found a new way to get 10k steps in.
