Two people had the ham and cheese pastry which was generously filled and smelled great. I had a small Hawaiin pizza. The pizza crust was an obviously pre-made crust complete with the holes all over it that those types of crust typically have. It wasn't a fantastic crust BUT it was prepared well and not dried out. It was soft and bready and the rest of the toppings were great including the ham. We had 2 Heath bar cookies and they were absolutely top-notch. I would definitely go back here for the tasty well priced food, spacious pleasant dining area and overall feel. There were a few insects flying around the room the day we were there. They are probably tough to keep completely out of the room in spring but they are off-putting for sure.

Delicious display of desserts. Baked breads available. And different items throughout the store. I and a couple others ordered Phillys with a side of mac. My Philly was seasoned well, good amount of cheese, bell peppers and onions. It was on white bread and wrapped in foil. The mac was thick and creamy. Texturally the pasta was slightly chewy and the cheese sauce was thick. It coats your tongue. I believe it's a white mac (vermont cheddar, most likely. As it was sharp and slightly sweet). It was packaged in a 4oz to go cup with lid. I also picked up a magic bar and a cinnamon roll (not pictured). My only complaint, is when a co-worker went an hour later and ordered the same thing, her sandwhich looked better. It was double the meat and her bread was toasted. So there seems to be a bit of inconsistency depending on who makes the sandwhich. I'll post pics of both sandwiches.

But I like the atmosphere too, always filled with locals: workers on lunch break, people gathered to play trivia in the evening (sadly not in summer though). Service is always good, people are friendly, and the outdoors-themed decor is quirky and dominated by an oversized model rifle over the bar. The open room with the bar in the center means you can enjoy the ambience wherever you sit. The place feels clean, including the bathrooms which are single-use, gender-neutral with changing tables. The pub-style menu is heavy on burgers, wings, and pizzas. Also nachos, salads, fish&chips, shepherd's pie, pastas, and more. A large selection of burgers, and always a monthly burger special. This month it was the Apple Fest: with cheddar, bacon, maple cinnamon aioli, and apple slices. Interesting enough but the apples didn't really add anything. Points for creativity though. The bacon was nicely crisp. The burgers are large (8 oz) and served on a brioche bun, butter-brushed - a bit too heavily in my opinion. Cooked to your requested doneness - unusual at this level of restaurant - and correctly. Served with a side of fries: decent enough but not outstanding, with a very light cornmeal batter. What the burger entrees lack is a third item: a pickle, small side of coleslaw, etc. At least throw in a pickle wedge please. I also like the Rodeo Burger: jalapenos, french-fried onions, lettuce, cheddar, and barbecue sauce. The French Connection is interesting too. On other occasions I've tried the pizza. Good but not memorable. Definitely better than the other pizza place in town though. It's a thick crust with generous amount of cheese, ample toppings, and a sauce that tastes like more than just tomatoes. The crust isn't made in-house (I asked) but it's better than many. The french onion soup, which has been on the specials board for as long as I've been coming, is a big disappointment. Thin, metallic-tasting broth, onions cut too small, and cheese topping that isn't properly browned under the broiler. I can't understand why it's popular but I see it ordered frequently. As for drinks, it's about the beers here. There's a large selection including many drafts. Including locals from the island, nearby Stowe, and elsewhere in Vermont. As for ciders of which I'm a fan, sadly only one: Citizens United, a fairly boring choice but at least it's local. A few wines by the glass are available for the wine drinkers. Mixed drinks like margaritas are a waste: Weak on alcohol and made from overly sweet mixes. Avoid. The desserts: brownie sundaes, cheesecake, peanut butter pie, bread pudding. I've never tried them, except once: churros. Unexpected: typically found in Mexican restaurants. Definitely not recommended. Little cinnamon flavor, and a strange filling that reminded me more of a thin cannoli. One more thing before I go: They ALWAYS have help-wanted signs up and their Facebook page also mentions it frequently. And more than once I saw on their Facebook that they had to open late or close early due to to lack of staffing. I have to wonder: why do they have trouble finding and keeping staff? Is it a problem with morale or bad management? I don't know. But the staff is always pleasant and seem unstressed so if so they're doing a good job hiding it. Whatever the reason, I hope they can fix it. Short staffing and frequent turnaround is not a good thing.

I don't know that I'd call this "fine dining", as it's described on their website. It just doesn't…read morehave that feel, due to factors like flimsy paper napkins instead of cloth, glass-covered tables instead of tablecloths, etc. But first impressions from my limited experience (lunch consisting of a fried fish sandwich, a drink, and a "Citrus Tarte" for dessert) are it's a decent full-service sit-down restaurant, and locally owned (not a chain). Because this was lunch I didn't try any of their numerous seafood entrees. The fish was haddock. A single, thick piece of a generous size that fit the bun well. The fish was very fresh, flaked nicely, and the batter was crunchy, just the right thickness, and adhered to the fish without coming off. The brioche bun, butter-brushed and shiny on top, was fresh and slightly sweet. It's served open-faced with the lettuce (good greens, not iceberg) and tomato (a thick slab, pretty good for a restaurant tomato) on one side and the fish on the other. So the greens stay crisp and you can season to your liking and then assemble it. It was served with generously-sized lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side, and the waitress brought a bottle of Tabasco on my request. This comes with choice of one side. I chose french fries. I feel that it should come with two sides. A small portion of cole slaw would have been nice but I wasn't going to order a large portion a la carte. But the fries were excellent: standard cut, with skins, double fried but not greasy, and generously salted. Perhaps a little more fries than I needed. Half fries and half slaw would be better. It was the middle of the day so I didn't try any of their interesting sounding specialty cocktails, many of which included maple syrup this being Vermont. And the sangrias sounded interesting (2 kinds; the red included amaretto and the white, peach schnapps and Sprite, both made with fresh fruit). Instead, I got a Citizen's Cider, refreshing and bubbly, filling the pilsner glass to the brim, and just slightly sweet. Perfect. My waitress, and service overall, was good. There was a bit of a delay after ordering my drink, and I was very thirsty, but she eventually returned, with apologies for the delay, and also brought water at that time without asking. No other issues with service. She even noticed a mistake on the bill and corrected it before I even noticed: charged me for the wrong dessert, saving me a whole dollar! For dessert I got the "Citrus Tarte". From the description it sounded like a Key Lime Pie so I asked and she said that's basically what it is. I imagine the only difference is they use a generic lime juice or other citrus rather than key lime. It was ok but not spectacular. The filling wasn't really tangy enough and lacked that special key lime flavor. The crust, loosely pressed graham cracker, was very good, with more than the usual amount of salt. However, it was served with an excessive amount of whipped topping out of a spray can, and it was definitely not real cream. Moreover it was starting to melt so it was not attractive. I didn't use it. Either use real whipped cream - even if it's from a spray can - or leave it off completely please. The dessert was HUGE though. I wasn't planning to eat the whole thing but in the end I did. The place was clean but a bit run down. The floor was covered by outdated wall-to-wall carpeting and was stained (but not dirty). Wood paneling was chipped and in need of refinishing. Curtains on the windows have seen better days. Overall though, it's an attractive, comfortable place to eat. The bar was especially attractive with its dark wood and mirrors, and quirks like an antique grandfather clock (not woking) gave it a a homey feel. Bonus: I saw no television anywhere! Restroom was also clean. I don't know that I'd get an expensive seafood dinner here. But maybe I would. They do have quite a large selection, not all standards. I'm a bit bothered by their vagueness about sourcing, saying only "We strive to ... support local farms and other local vendors as much as possible." Without listing the names of those farms and vendors as is customary. And "as much as possible" really means nothing at all as far as I'm concerned. Ok, so first impression, based on a limited lunch experience, is 4 stars. This could go down or stay the same on a return visit and I'll update if that happens. It was good enough that I'd certainly consider a return visit someday.

So let's get down to the review business. 3 years ago I would have given this place 5-stars but let's take a look at why they've been dropped down 1 star. Their atmosphere is wonderful, the wall art is very on par with their brand and feel, their staff are very friendly and welcoming. The cleanliness of this place is what you'd expect from a very busy pizza venue; clean i the AM, crumbs in the PM, but never really "dirty". The food quality of their non-pizza options is on par & amazing. And I would say the same for their pizza, except a few years back they made a change to their Mozzarella and I have been greatly disappointed. Every time my partner and I dine on their pizza or mozzarella based food options we feel crumby afterwards. We've found that cheaper mozzarellas tend to have more oil leading to more tummy upsets. But I have to say the rest of their foods, the non-mozz options, are on par with an Italian pizzeria, wonderful, tasty, presented beautifully. Overall their food is wonderful, their staff are very friendly, and the business is clean & presentable. I'd recommend giving them a try yourself next time you're in St Albans.
