Jeff's - we went Thursday night (a friend and I, she was having a bad time and needed to talk) and our server was understanding and respectful of the vibe. We had delicious mussels as an app, and both had strip steaks. Perfectly cooked, delicious. Prices were reasonable, dining room had a low buzz of conversation which hopefully camouflaged the occasional sob or growl of anger which emerged from our table. Timeless - I was surprised to find such an amazing place here. So delicious and the scallops were amazing.

I don't know that I'd call this "fine dining", as it's described on their website. It just doesn't have that feel, due to factors like flimsy paper napkins instead of cloth, glass-covered tables instead of tablecloths, etc. But first impressions from my limited experience (lunch consisting of a fried fish sandwich, a drink, and a "Citrus Tarte" for dessert) are it's a decent full-service sit-down restaurant, and locally owned (not a chain). Because this was lunch I didn't try any of their numerous seafood entrees. The fish was haddock. A single, thick piece of a generous size that fit the bun well. The fish was very fresh, flaked nicely, and the batter was crunchy, just the right thickness, and adhered to the fish without coming off. The brioche bun, butter-brushed and shiny on top, was fresh and slightly sweet. It's served open-faced with the lettuce (good greens, not iceberg) and tomato (a thick slab, pretty good for a restaurant tomato) on one side and the fish on the other. So the greens stay crisp and you can season to your liking and then assemble it. It was served with generously-sized lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side, and the waitress brought a bottle of Tabasco on my request. This comes with choice of one side. I chose french fries. I feel that it should come with two sides. A small portion of cole slaw would have been nice but I wasn't going to order a large portion a la carte. But the fries were excellent: standard cut, with skins, double fried but not greasy, and generously salted. Perhaps a little more fries than I needed. Half fries and half slaw would be better. It was the middle of the day so I didn't try any of their interesting sounding specialty cocktails, many of which included maple syrup this being Vermont. And the sangrias sounded interesting (2 kinds; the red included amaretto and the white, peach schnapps and Sprite, both made with fresh fruit). Instead, I got a Citizen's Cider, refreshing and bubbly, filling the pilsner glass to the brim, and just slightly sweet. Perfect. My waitress, and service overall, was good. There was a bit of a delay after ordering my drink, and I was very thirsty, but she eventually returned, with apologies for the delay, and also brought water at that time without asking. No other issues with service. She even noticed a mistake on the bill and corrected it before I even noticed: charged me for the wrong dessert, saving me a whole dollar! For dessert I got the "Citrus Tarte". From the description it sounded like a Key Lime Pie so I asked and she said that's basically what it is. I imagine the only difference is they use a generic lime juice or other citrus rather than key lime. It was ok but not spectacular. The filling wasn't really tangy enough and lacked that special key lime flavor. The crust, loosely pressed graham cracker, was very good, with more than the usual amount of salt. However, it was served with an excessive amount of whipped topping out of a spray can, and it was definitely not real cream. Moreover it was starting to melt so it was not attractive. I didn't use it. Either use real whipped cream - even if it's from a spray can - or leave it off completely please. The dessert was HUGE though. I wasn't planning to eat the whole thing but in the end I did. The place was clean but a bit run down. The floor was covered by outdated wall-to-wall carpeting and was stained (but not dirty). Wood paneling was chipped and in need of refinishing. Curtains on the windows have seen better days. Overall though, it's an attractive, comfortable place to eat. The bar was especially attractive with its dark wood and mirrors, and quirks like an antique grandfather clock (not woking) gave it a a homey feel. Bonus: I saw no television anywhere! Restroom was also clean. I don't know that I'd get an expensive seafood dinner here. But maybe I would. They do have quite a large selection, not all standards. I'm a bit bothered by their vagueness about sourcing, saying only "We strive to ... support local farms and other local vendors as much as possible." Without listing the names of those farms and vendors as is customary. And "as much as possible" really means nothing at all as far as I'm concerned. Ok, so first impression, based on a limited lunch experience, is 4 stars. This could go down or stay the same on a return visit and I'll update if that happens. It was good enough that I'd certainly consider a return visit someday. read more

Is this Vermont fancy? Well I had the creamy sage seafood pasta, and they did not skimp nor over plate it with protein. It was tasty, fresh, and wonderful. In a refreshing twist for me the calamari was fried well and without needless peppers. But i did miss tentacles! There are a lot of craft breweries with gastropub food in the area so this place stands out a little above the rest it is very nice date restaurant and worth checking out if you're staying in St. Albans for a few. Didn't have baked potatoes on a Saturday at 4PM - ran out Friday, we were told. Five of us, and we were brought a basket of bread and butter and were told she'd be back with another basket, but never came. Never had water refilled, never asked if we wanted coffee. Had appetizers, main meal, drinks, and dessert. Tab almost $400, and we were asked to leave after an hour and a half, told they had another party coming in. The restaurant was NOT full, and the prime rib was tough. Used to be my favorite - don't know if I'll ever go back. When asked if I could have a small house salad in place of the veggies being offered, I was told no - that the veggies came with the meal, and I could order a salad and be charged for it. I went to this restaurant last night and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. When we arrived there were several tables open and the restaurant was closing in an hour and a half, yet we were seated at the bar. It took about 15 to 20 minutes just to have our drink order taken and over an hour to receive our food, even though the restaurant was not busy. When my meal finally came out, I took one bite and could not eat it because the flavor was honestly just very bad. I politely told our waitress I would not be eating it and that I would just share my boyfriend's meal since we did not have time to wait another hour for a replacement. When we received the bill my dish was still included. My boyfriend kindly asked if it could be removed, but the bartender rudely refused and spoke to us in an inappropriate tone, saying they could not take something off just because I did not like it. I have only sent food back around 3 times in my entire life, and every other restaurant I have ever been to has handled it with kindness and understanding. To make things worse, the staff were openly gossiping about another customer at the bar, which was completely unprofessional. Overall, the service was rude, my dish was not good, and the way the staff handled the situation was unacceptable. There were three of us. One had the lobster,scallop and shrimp linguine, one had the ny strip special and one had the baked haddock. All three were very delicious, hot and in point. This is the kind of place that you really have to know what to order to have a great time. The BLT sandwich is classic and yummy, the sweet potato fries are delicious and crispy, the calamari is crazy good, and the scallops on the dinner menu are sooooo good with that ritz cracker crumble. And I had a Cuban sandwich there once on a special menu that was really nice. On the not so good side, we had a "prime rib special" that was the weirdest experience ever. It was tiny, we asked for med rare and this poor tiny thing came out with grill marks on either side, cold in the middle, and tough as an old boot. Honestly looked like it had been taken out of the fridge and thrown on the grill. Zero seasonings. Not what a prime rib special should be at all. The fish sandwich is weird, and I'm not in love with the mango tartar sauce. So you really need to find what you like and stick to it. I walked in with my one (1) year old at 2pm for lunch. I was told by the hostess that the kitchen was changing over for dinner service ( keep in mind the menu does not change). The restaurant barely had any customers. My son and I had traveled all day and were very hungry. I asked to speak with the manager but she still refused us service. I even noticed that other tables had not received their meals. I explained to them that I was simply going to order a fish sandwich and a kids macaroni and cheese. I found Jeff's by "restaurants when me" when I was near St Albans VT for a wedding, and am I lucky I found them. We had no reservation but still got a high top near the bar. The food was absolutely phenomenal. We had the escargot and seafood with pasta. Over $25 for a main entree which includes a side of either diner french fries or mashed potatoes. Small side salad not included unless you pay an additional $2. So, you're paying over $25 for a main entree which includes nothing more than a protein and a starch--something that would easily cost under $5 at the grocery store. That pricing is ridiculous for St. Albans. If the food were amazing or even very good, that would be one thing. But it's nothing more than what you would expect from a functional restaurant. Certainly not worth the prices it charges and it's clearly an attempt to capitalize on the lack of competition in the area. It's insulting to the people of Franklin County and completely out of touch with the community here. Save your money and go elsewhere. It never used to be this expensive to eat here and any claim about "inflation" is nothing more than self-serving justification. Jeff's has lost its way. read more

What a treat it was to go to this restaurant! We were driving from Montreal to Boston and decided to stay the night in St. Albans, Vermont to explore a new place and came across this cute and elegant restaurant located in the heart of the city center! This was a Saturday night and it was so crowded that we were going to have to wait 50 minutes for a table for two but we found two spots at the bar and sat there. It was such a lovely experience- our bartender and waitress was very interactive and lots of fun and we sat beside a local couple who were lots of fun as well. The food arrived in a timely manner and every dish was delicious. We opted for 3 'appetizers' and one main to share for the two of us but that was too much food. We wanted to try everything! The oysters were fresh as can be, we were given 12 escargots which was so generous for the price, the clam chowder was thick, delicious and plentiful -- I'm glad we tried these three dishes and I would definitely recommend. I went to Jeff Maine Seafood on Valentine's Day and it was a very lovely experience. The environment was very romantic laid back at the same time but fancy. It has little cozy boothes to sit in and also there was large tables that you could sit in,if you had a big party. The lighting in the environment was very relaxed and romantic. The service was on top of their game, when they visited us to make sure we had everything we needed. It was just right not too much which I like. (Very friendly, very knowledgeable about their menu). My spouse does not like seafood but they had a good array of different types of foods that were not seafood so he was quite happy. On the other hand I love seafood so I got myself the beet ravioli, which honestly the ravioli itself was bland a little bit however the sauce definitely compensated for that and it was delicious. I'll probably never get that this again but there's so much of variety on the menu that I would definitely want to come back to Jeff's Maine seafood. My spouse got the sirloin and mashed potatoes he also got the buffalo bites (which is absolutely very delicious I was very surprised I might just order that to go one of these days cuz I'm pregnant right now and I actually have that in my mind that I want those buffalo bites they were that good). The place is a little pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. Fun experience to do that on a Valentine's Day. I've always wanted to go to that restaurant since I was little, that's how long this restaurant has been in St Albans. DEE-Licious! There were 4 of us. I had the spinach salad (soo good!) and pecan crusted salmon--the salad was almost a meal in itself, but the salmon was worth the add-on. I shared the bacon wrapped scallops--also good. Two people had the clam chowder--they indicated it was very good. My husband and one other person had the southwestern swordfish. My husband is not a big seafood eater, but enjoyed the meal very much. The 4th person had the baked sea scallops and enjoyed them. Two shared the lava cake--they ate it all up after hearing several mmm-mmm comments! Erin, our waitress, was so much fun. Service with a smile--really enjoyed our dining experience. Clam chowder was amazing, my daughters haddock was delicious but the three stars is because I had a lobster craving so my husband and I decided to try a new seafood restaurant. I ordered the 'lobster' linguini and while the pasta and sauce were delicious at $30 a plate I was expecting more than one ripped apart lobster claw! What a bummer. If that's the portion whatever I guess but maybe call it seafood linguini... there were three scallops and three shrimp in there and im pretty sure one scallop was bigger than the portion of lobster.
