I was debating getting DoorDash at work today, to get delivery. The DoorDash delivery guy was fast and did an awesome job. Now for the food-it's really good. See pics. I got the chimichangas and quesadilla sampler. I hadn't eaten yet when I got my delivery. I was able to take one bite of the chicken quesadilla and 3/4 of ONE of the 2 chimichangas, as well as a few bites of beans and rice. The chimichangas and quesadillas are LOADED with meat. Not much cheese on the quesadillas, but I'd prefer mass quantities of meat over cheese. The meat in chimichangas is shredded and juicy. They are covered with queso and paired with beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole. These two meals will get me through two days of food. Prices are $10-20/meal. The weather was great and the patio looked inviting so we optioned for Mexican instead. The menu options were good and our group ended up sampling quite a few of them as the pictures will show. You will see pictures for each of the following below: Carnitas Tacos, Lobster Relleno, Spicy Grilled Burrito, Burrito Bowl Grilled Chicken & Steak, Chimichangas Supremas, Lobster Chimichanga and Chips & Salsa. We found all of the food to be solid and above average with the exception of the chips, which weren't my favorite. While not having any alcoholic drinks contributed, the value is quite good...as we only spent $16 per person before the tip. An outstanding Mexican restaurant with terrific customer service and a great vibe, this is one of Ankeny's best food options. This was our initial visit. There is plenty of parking. Wear casual attire. Sit inside or outside on their shaded patio. There are lots of menu options. Coca-Cola products. The interior and exterior are great. I didn't use the restroom. Daily specials for lunch and dinner are reasonably priced and superb options. Seven to pick two selections from. Our server, Sebastian, was excellent, offering much guidance regarding the menu while never rushing us. I enjoyed their guacamole, which was just $5.95 for a sizable portion and tasty. I also liked the chips. They have seven combo meals as daily specials, which allow you to graze while visiting. It's my second time here and I ordered the chicken chimichanga deluxe (again) cause it was that good! I mean who doesn't like a huge burrito covered w cheese?! Portion size is good I barely was able to finish 1 chimichanga. My friends also said their food was good and I did have a bite of the fish taco which was good, but it had just too much cabbage IMO. Food is mediocre at best. Bit into my burrito and there was a square metal piece in it. Definitely from their cooking equipment/ prep table. All they did was comp my burrito. Luckily I didn't swallow it or else it would've done some serious damage. Would advise no one to visit this place. Plenty of better Mexican places to eat in Ankeny. We are back! It's been 7 months, and I'm excited to get the same dish as last time. The service is really good. They were attentive and kind The music was playing and we enjoyed our chips and salsa. I'm not sure how this place has suck a high rating. Maybe we were there on an off night. From the time we arrived we were seated right away. It took over 90 minutes to get our food. Wait staff seemed to disappear when we were looking for them. Once the food finally arrived the food was cold. By the time we found another wait staff another 18 minutes went by. Asked for a box and our bill. Over all it was nearly 2 hours from start to finish, cold food, no apology, no discount, and no tip. I was really hoping for more. read more

Stopped by for a late dinner based on a recommendation from some locals. Nice place kind of hidden away near the Aldi and next to a bar that looked really busy. We had tacos (street and chicken) and house margaritas. Good chips and salsa - a bit spicy which we liked. Tacos were decent. Loved the spicy sauce. Only down side was the really thin corn tortillas which made them hard to eat - just used a fork. Margarita was not really to our taste but not bad. We stopped in at 3pm on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy. We were seated immediately and were almost over whelmed on our first visit with the menus. Fiesta Jalapenos has an excellent bar/ drink menu that caught my eye and the regular food menu had me drooling before I could get water that was brought to the table almost immediately . We really enjoyed the salsa that came out before the meal and the fresh guac was amazing. The small order was almost more then 2 of us could finish. If I could rate this 0 stars, I would. Not sure if I came on an off day or if they got new staff/management but took 10 minutes to get sat even though we were the only ones standing at the door. 20 minutes just get asked what we wanted to drink. No staff to be found and it's not even busy. Food took 30 minutes and came out cold. Food came out wrong so I had to send it back which was whatever, but it just added more time. Rice was bland, chicken was dry and overall just not impressed. Will not be wasting my money here again. While writing this, we had been waiting for the bill for 10 minutes with no one looking our way. Lastly, when someone did finally come, they turned around with my card and the card machine to talk to someone at the bar so I had no idea what they were doing with my card. read more

North Ankeny finally has a full service Mexican restaurant and the wait was worth it. Stopped in for lunch now that the kids are back in school. We were blown away by the quality. The salsa that they brought with the chips was amazing. Just enough spice but so much flavor. The two lunches we ordered were the Street Tacos and Burrito Mexicano. Neither of us were disappointed. The Street Tacos had the perfect blend of pineapples, steak, and chorizo. Put a little of the spicy salsa on it and WOW!!! It was a flavor explosion. Even the white rice with peas was good. You could tell it wasn't just cheap rixe. The Burrito was filled with very tender pork. This was your typical Americanized Mexican dish but the pork really stood out. The cheese they used to drizzle on top also complimented the burrito and didn't over power it. They also have a very Covid friendly way to pay. On the receipt was a QR code that let you pay right at the table via Clover. It made checking out very quick and simple. Can't wait to come back again and try another dish or two at lunch time. read more

We have given this place multiple tries over the years. A 2 star is an average overall. I have noticed the food has gotten way too salty. Once to the point I couldn't finish my meal. The food overall is average. Food presentation is nonexistent. Sometimes the food is cold so had to be sent back. The staff are friendly, but service is slow to the point that you think they forgot about you multiple times in a visit (has happened every time I have been). They do a good job of accommodating large groups. There are other Mexican restaurants in the Ankeny area where you will have a better experience. read more

Went to dinner on Saturday night and one of the dishes was missing three of the ingredients listed in the menu. The dish was Missing queso pleblano peppers and sour cream. We brought this to the attention of our waitress and pointed it out on the menu where it listed those 3 things as key features of the dish. She had to go get assistance to understand what was wrong and once she did understand she brought out the sour cream, but then brought out sauteed jalapenos. We again pointed out this was not what was listed in the menu and asked for roasted pleblanos. To which again she needed to go request assistance and then brought out sauteed green peppers. At this point we asked for a manager and after about 10 minutes. She confirmed that the restaurant was indeed out of poblano's. This should have been something very easy for the cooks or the waitress to point out prior to the food being brought to the table. Or even prepared. Instead, 2 different incorrect ingredients were brought to the table. Queso was never brought at all. The service was absolutely terrible and the food was cold by the time we got it. read more

I had the Burrito Tapatio; the chicken and peppers were freshly sautéed and tasted good. However, it was doused in queso which overpowered the great chicken/pepper/onion taste. Visited this place for the first time last night and I was impressed with the decor and atmosphere. But that was about it. We arrived about 7:45 and after a 5 minute wait we were seated. Mind you the place had very few patrons so I was surprised it took that long even though the staff was staring right at us. We ordered the lobster tacos, guacamole, a side of rice and 2 margaritas. The tacos came with refried beans and we explained to the waitress that we were splitting the dinner when we ordered. I mentioned this because we didn't get a an extra plate to split the dinner until we asked, nor any extra napkins. When our tacos arrived we hadn't gotten our guacamole so I told them to to just forget it. As we started to dig in I found my refried beans were cold. So after waiting ten minutes our waitress finally came over to ask how our dinner was I asked her if the beans were meant to be served cold. (Like a bean dip) She said no so she went to get me another bowl of them. After waiting another 10 minutes she brought my beans to me. They were Just as cold. No joke!!! I gave up at that point. When the waitress passed by again I asked her about my beans again and she apologized and said she even asked the cook about the beans and made sure they had been warmed up, and he confirmed. Lol. Even the outside of the ceramic bowl was cold. Unbelievable crappy service. Then there was the tacos. Although there were pretty tasty the bacon in them was almost raw. I also have to call BS on them having real lobster in them. I'm pretty positive it was imitation crab meat. Although I would have been ok with that, it does not state that on the menu. The next disappointment was the compensation. They only took off one of the margaritas. The cheapest one of the two we ordered. The equivalent of $11. Charged me full price for my imitation crab and raw bacon tacos and cold beans. Then the manager came over and explained to me that there was a sign on the door when we came in that they were closing at 8:30 due to some cleaning maintenance they had planned and that maybe if we would have come earlier we would have gotten better service!!! The sign was not up when we walked in. They had put it up after we were seated. He actually blamed us for their shitty service!!! He then handed me a 10% discount card for our next visit. Lmao!! As I walked out I threw his discount card on the lobby floor. What a joke. I reviewed my receipt when I got to my car and they charged me $15.50 for my $11 dollar margarita. FML!!! I would love to recommend this place because it seems to have a great menu and it has pretty cool looking decor like glass flower beds in the floors but I think they should have spent that money on better cooks, waitresses and a better manager. Definitely in the running for the best restaurant Ankeny. The food is the best Mexican in the area and it's not even close. The margarita options are plentiful and have nice little twists like the blackberry mint and spicy mango. The service is very quick and the staff is pleasant. The carnitas tacos, Queso funedido, enchiladas and bacon wrapped shrimp are my favorites. During the week they run margaritas specials too. read more

We tried this place for the first time yesterday. While the food was ready when I arrived and the staff friendly I did find a issue. When I got home and the food was passed out one entree was cool borderline cold. The rest was warm as would be expected on the drive home. I will start by saying the margaritas are awesome! But it was downhill after that. The place is freezing cold. Not just the fact that the heater, but the air conditioning is running in the winter. There is an alarm at the front door that beeps every 10 seconds and is extremely irritating. We asked if they could do something with it, but they said they couldn't. What appears to be the owner and our weight person getting into a large, loud heated discussion prevented us from being able to hear each other or get anybody to check us out. The place is a little off the main track and not easily seen from the main road (Ankeny Blvd). It's tucked in behind the Bankers Trust building but it's worth finding. read more

The food was great, but our experience was completely eclipsed by the terrible service. Our waiter did not take away dirty plates, refill our water, or ask questions until we could finally get his attention and flag him down to order and to request items. It seemed the rest of the tables had appropriately attentive servers, and thanks to the busboy and other staff who did help us when they noticed we were sitting there waiting. Instead, our waiter sat at the bar with the bartenders and a few guests. We left no tip, which we NEVER do. Obviously the other staff saw that we weren't getting service and did nothing about prompting our waiter, so I'm torn on ever going back. Food was amazing though. read more

A small, and weak "premium" margarita awaits you at the bar for a convenient $16. After ordering simple, and safe menu items, over an hour wait from placing the order to actually eating dinner. How hard is a plain cheese quesadilla and fajita nachos??? Apparently it takes almost 60min! Colorful, modern, yet strange garnishes... who puts spring mix on nachos? Peppers were raw, onions raw, food cold. Minimal service. I would expect more from from a High School cafeteria than what our experience was this evening.
