Found this spot close to my hotel and it had good reviews. Started off with chips and salsa, chips were pretty basic and the salsa was ok. I was nervous to see what my entree was going to taste like, especially after the chips...end up ordering the Pollo a la crema. IT WAS INCREDIBLE, there was definitely some kick to the crema sauce that I was not expecting. Just the right amount of heat, was able to finish the whole thing. I was traveling for work and staying at the Hilton hotel nearby. I searched for a dinner spot and this one ranked number two but was close and Mexican sounded good. It's not the the fanciest of neighborhoods but was not bad inside. The parking lot was full and that is always a good signal. The service was friendly and quick. I eat at a lot of Mexican restaurants, as it is one of my favorite cuisines. The salsa was mild and fresh. The chips were average but fine. I ordered the Chicken Corn tacos. They were excellent and the fresh made taco sauce even better. It was spicy, so if that's not your thing, you may want to steer clear of it. I am a huge Pico fan and it did not disappoint. I would have given 5 stars but the building does look a little shady from the outside for a lone female entering and the dining area was small and could use some updating. Though I didn't feel unsafe. There was one older lady working who had a mad face all the time, but I tried to be nice anyway. read more

This unassuming place makes some of the best Mexican food in the area. I placed an order of fajitas for 20 people during a blizzard when we were stranded at the airport and everything else was closed, and they went above and beyond! Food was freshly prepared, hot, generous, and absolutely delicious. We returned with a party of 3; our table ordered the puerquito marinero and seafood combo. Both were flavorful and expertly prepared. Service was excellent. Prices are exceptionally reasonable and portions generous. The building isn't fancy, but it doesn't need to be. read more

Very good! Mexican! I really love the salsa a lot, good amount of cilantro, which I love. Along with the standard salsa with the chips,they also provide one free bean dip as well. The bean dip was really good. I had the steak enchiladas with cheese sauce. Excellent! At most Mexican restaurants I don't usually get the beans as a side because they are usually too runny. Being that it was my first time here I thought I would give them a try. That turned out to be a good choice. The beans were runny at all and had a good consistency and good taste. The service was adequate. I thought our food took a little long to come out, but being that we had good chips and salsa and some margaritas, it was no big deal. A sweet Mexican restaurant very close to the airport. Almost close enough to walk to if you have a longish layover, which of course you don't have, because you are in Des Moines. I had the house special, the name I have forgotten but I think it may have started with a Q. Who cares - it was a healthy composition of all the meat in the house, with the normal Mexican sides. Thin sliced steak, carnitas, chorizo, chicken, something else I can't remember at the moment. Suffice it to say - my doggy bag fed me lunch and dinner the next day. I would rate this place 0 stars but it wouldn't let me. I had a horrible experience here. First, I found a hair in the complementary salsa for the chips. Not a big deal, I told my waitress about it so I could get new salsa but as I was telling my waitress, the manager of the establishment walked by and I could only assume me being a white lady she thought I couldn't speak Spanish let alone understand it. But the manager I believe her name was Alondra, proceeded to tell her that it was probably my hair because "white people always lose there hair". I chose to ignore this comment as I just wanted to have a good time with my family but after that I did notice that my family and me started to receive dirty looks from the manager. Again, I chose to ignore all that as I just wanted to have a nice meal with my family. Fast forward to the bill, I notice we where charged for the chips and salsa 14.99, I thought this was outrageous as our only complaint to the waitress was the hair we found and I asked nicely for new salsa. The lady that checked us out was the restaurant manager (Alondra) and I asked why we where charged for the salsa and chips. she told us that they always do and it's not free. I told her we have been there before and we didn't get charged. Then she proceeded to say it was a new policy to charge for the chips, I didn't believe her so I brought up the comment she made earlier and told her she only made that comment because she thought I couldn't understand Spanish. She started denying it and saying I don't actually know Spanish because if I did I would have known that's not what she said, but she gave me lots of attitude and was being really defensive. I didn't want to make a big scene so I decided to drop it and just pay. But as I was leaving I hear the manager (Alondra) taking to one the waiters and in Spanish she saids ( esa guera está loca, trae problemas) witch translates to,(that white lady is crazy, she has issue.) I left as I knew confronting her was not going to solve anything. My waitress was amazing and the food was good but the manager of the establishment has a really bad attitude and a sense of entitlement. Her working there is the only bad thing about the restaurant and they should really look for someone to take her place if they don't want this establishment to get a bad reputation. read more

First time here. We ordered two entrees, a kids meal, and queso with our chips and salsa. As well as two margaritas. Pro tip right out of the gate: When it comes to Margarita sizes... Small means Regular, and Medium means pretty Large, and Large means FISH BOWL! I accidentally ordered a Large knowing I wanted at least two, and got a 48 oz fishbowl. It was only $12, but I could have done with a couple smalls. Food was great and wells priced. Had a very attentive staff. Great addition to the south side restaurant scene. We've sampled a LOT of DSMs Mexican restaurants, had a few that were our favorites, but for some reason or another went downhill and we've given them up as a lost cause. Time for a new favorite! And this is it! LaCabana's service is prompt, friendly and accurate. We haven't sampled the offerings from their bar, but they seem to be VERY popular with the other guests. We've tried at least 8 different dishes thus far (and probably visiting more often than we should) and everything has been delicious, hot and generously portioned. Extra bonus, they make a very good salsa (always a measure of whether a return visit is warranted). The atmosphere is jovial and warm and I can't remember a visit where there wasn't at least one table laughing up a storm and having a really good time. My only caveat is that the shrimp in any dish that calls for it, are a bit overdone, so we've skipped that the past few visits. But the Carnitas, on the other hand, are my husband's absolute favorite. read more

Went on National Margarita say to enjoy a $12.99 pitcher of margaritas. These were okay, but no means the best flavored ones I've had but had enough tequila to get you going. We were greeted with a friendly waiter, chips salsa and a bean dip promptly. We noticed though, that there were 6 different bottles of hot sauce on the table... Not a good sign. I ordered the fajitas with chicken, steak, shrimp and chorizo. The chorizo had an odd flavor to it. There were 3 shrimp in the fajitas. Lots of tomatoes and peppers. Little onion. My boyfriend had the carnitas, which were not very flavorful and actually pretty mushy. They had no carmalization to them at all. Overall, the flavor just lacked from the food and didn't stand up to other places I've tried. Maybe it would have been better had I used one of the several hot sauces provided at the table. The price for the lackluster food wasn't very reasonable, but we did get out of there for about $45 including tip. I would recommend trying another Mexican restaurant on the south side. read more

i have been in the Des Moines area for nearly a year and in that year of eating 90% of the time Mexican food, La Cabana has the best Chili Colorado thus far. When i lived in Alaska there is a restaurant in Anchorage called La Cabana and by far that restaurant is the best Mexican food in Alaska. So naturally i had to try this La Cabana. Although, i am not ready to make the same claim over all for La Cabana Des Moines, i am confident in recommending them and their Chili Colorado. Now i do have this issue and it's not a La Cabana issue it's a Des Moines issue. i grew up in Southern California and even while in Alaska i would say all of the chili Colorado is served with chunks of meat like stew meat, yet here in Des Moines all the chili Colorado (so far, admittedly i have about 50 restaurants to go) is served with finely sliced meat, why is that? Chunks are so much better for the esthetics of the dish and the overall taste/experience of Chili Colorado. Anyway, this place should be booming all the time. Great flavor, great atmosphere, great service. Let's go Des Moines let's show La Cabana some foodie love! read more

This restaurant is about a 3 minute drive from the Holiday Inn & Convention Center at the Des Moines airport. It's a family type restaurant that is no-frills. The food was tasty and plentiful. My friend had the fish soup that she raved about (prawns, crab legs and so much more!). I had the Arroz con Pollo (chicken and rice). It also was enough to feed 2 people. I had the chicken fajita taco salad. They brought out soup which was amazing! I am sure it was full of butter and cream. I liked the slightly different flavor this taco salad had and it wasn't like every other Mexican restaurant. Salsa was mild but tasty and guacamole had a few tomatoes and cilantro. I have never been more disrespected at a restaurant before. I do not recommend this restaurant. The manager Alondra hid behind the plexiglass the whole time I asked for better service. Very unprofessional establishment with servers that ignore you. Do not get service from Manuela the waitress. She is rude and looks like she does not want to be there. On top of all that the food had no flavor other than white velveeta cheese. Enchiladas suizas do not consist of flour tortillas with white cheese and more white cheese soup poured over it. When I told her she got the order wrong, she told me she was unable to help me. The manager, Alondra was even worse, cowardly hiding behind the plexiglass and refusing to tell me her last name, so her establishment could be reported to the BETTER Business Bureau. And don't even get me started on the restrooms. The point is, if people go OUT to eat, the client expects to be served and a pleasurable experience is crucial. A business that treats the client like they have no value, is a selfish display of power and if the food is shitty, nothing can save that. read more

I had a great night out the other night here with my beautiful lady! With so much Mexican food competition in DSM this place holds their own. They started us off with chips and salsa and surprisingly a side of bean dip too! I thought that was different and nice. We both decided to get steak burritos and they were hot, fresh, and delicious. Very generous portions of tasty rice and beans to go with it. Some Mexican restaraunts have questionable steak pieces, I assume because they buy it cheap, but this steak was really good! Our waitress was funny, friendly, and fast. The 3 F's lol. And made sure to keep the drinks coming and checked the perfect amount of times to not feel neglected or bothered. Great service. Oh, and did I mention Tuesday nights margaritas are $1!!! I cannot pass up a margarita or 3 at one dollar! They were strong too! I love me a strong margarita. We ordered out due to the social guidelines and wanting to support local businesses wherever we go. This one is yet another total winner!!! They were very nice on the phone when we order and said it would be 15 minutes. We arrived less then 10 minutes later to find our food smelling delicious and waiting for us to enjoy!!! Very impressed but a little nervous that it would be great and taste good being ready soooo fast. And again we were positively surprised at how amazing our lunch tastes. We took it back to our hotel and enjoyed it right out of the to go containers as we could no longer wait to taste this delicious feast. My wife and I ordered the Acapulco Fajitas (double portion) and our son is devouring his delicious and filling Tim S Nacho Grande. We were super surprised at the amount of food we got and how the flavors really come together in our meals. We added the queso cheese and salsa right into our fajitas and ate them without the tortillas. Yep if you're in Des Moines and looking for some great Mexican food, this is the place to stop!!!! This is my new go to Mexican food in Des Moines! I came here with my daughter not expecting too much. We went on a Saturday afternoon. The chips and salsa were freshly made and yummy! Probably some of the best guacamole I've had. The watermelon margarita on the rocks was really good. The medium was almost too big for me. They brought us soup as a bonus! It was so good. I ordered the super tacos with 2 chicken and 1 beef. The beef was really well seasoned. My daughter ordered nachos. They were huge! The only complaint is there wasn't enough cheese on them. That's the only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. I will be returning often :) read more

I have tried this place countless times now and it is good. I am very picky about margaritas and these margaritas are delicious. They have decent drink specials too. It is good for larger groups and very kid friendly. The service is quick and friendly I haven't had any complaints any of the times I have visited. We both got their medium margaritas on the rocks which where made at a good consistency. There queso is very good(one of my favorites) along with their salsa. They brought out a complimentary soup with chicken and cheese which was very very good(don't know the name). We both got lunch specials. I got the juanis special and he got the steak burritos, both very good. Both meats, chicken and steak were very moist and flavorful, which is something we look for in a Mexican restaurant. Rice was soft and beans were very good as well. Staff was polite and speedy. Restaurant was clean also, we'll definitely be back. read more
