My daughter told me about this place because she and her friends like to come for margaritas. I like new places so we decided to give it a shot. Plain and simple, I like this place. It's nothing fancy. Friendly and fast service. It had Mexican music playing on the speakers but it was more of a pop/rock Mexican, not the typical music you usually hear in establishments like this. I enjoyed it. Great Mexican beer on tap for what I thought was reasonable prices. Chips and salsa are good. You have to get the Hildago Molcajete. Huge, temperature hot, layers of different stuff, fantastic. Plenty of leftovers. True molcajete served in the stone bowl. No restaurant is cheap anymore. Back again! Plenty of parking outside on an early afternoon. We stopped back for another company lunch. This time I checked out the lunch menu. I found what will probably be my go to going forward. We were seated close to the bar. This was also a little closer to the kitchen and were attended to right away. The chips and salsa hit the table right away and we ordered up the guacamole and the queso. Everyone is always really nice and helpful. TVs on over the bar and music plays. I ordered the Huevos con Chorizo this time. Two scrambled eggs with chorizo, Mexican sausage, served with rice and beans. I had them hold the beans. Food came fast again. I was doing the happy food dance my eggs were so good. Once again, an all around great experience. 3 times out of 3 so far. read more

First time trying Hidalgo and it was ok. The service was great, and the food came out fast which I appreciated, lol. Once you sit down, they bring you chips and salsa. The salsa was mild, but it had good flavor. The ambiance inside is warm and cozy. I also appreciate that it's not too loud inside so you can have a good conversation at your table/booth. I tried the Seafood Enchiladas that came with two flour tortillas stuffed with shrimp and crab, topped with cheese sauce. The flavor was good, but the shrimp were a little salty and they used imitation crab meat. The pricing is fair which I appreciate. There is plenty of parking which I also appreciate because I get anxiety looking for a parking space, lol. read more

Hidalgo on100th in Urbandale The restaurant is about a block north of Hickman at 2675 100th, very close to my domicile. Plenty of parking space available. That location has been the final resting place of several restaurants during the 28 years I've lived here, and I believe Hidalgo can overcome that jinx. My old friend Rob (emphasis on the OLD. At 85, he's a year and five days older than me.) and I try to have lunch together at least once a week. I'm kinda handicapped, so he usually does the driving, and we've visited several favorite restaurants over the years. I'm a little more adventurous than he is, and I like to try new places, some of which become favorite places. I think Hidalgo is going to be one of those favorites. The place is operating room immaculate, the music was entertaining but not intrusive, the menu was more varied than those of the other Mexican restaurants on this side of town, and the service was prompt, friendly and attentive. I had checked out the menu on line, and I needed several mental coin tosses to choose between Carnitas, Mole Poblano, and Fajitas. The only menu item I settled on at once was the Horchata. I had enough Coke and Sprite in my own refrigerator. I didn't need to sip on those beverages in a restaurant. The Horchata was excellent; cool, flavorful, and just sweet enough. I smoke ribs and Boston butts at home, so Carnitas were not a new adventure. The photo of Chicken Fajitas in the online menu finally won out, and it was an excellent choice. I had hoped to finish with sopapillas, but after I ate the last bite of my fajita, Rob had to roll me out the door like a beer keg. (Well, I may have exaggerated about that.) He couldn't finish his California Burrito. I have only two suggestions: 1) The tortillas for the fajitas are just a tad too small. It's difficult to enclose the delicious innards. And 2) the meat and the peppers have different shapes and sizes. A fork works fine for the peppers, but a serving spoon would be better for the meat. Minor problems easily solved. First time and a great experience. The host noticed our daughter had dressed up for dinner and he made a big deal of seating her and speaking to her. We were promptly seated. The waiter came and got our drink orders. I asked which margarita he would recommend and he gave me a large sample of the watermelon margarita. Won me over immediately Food came and was delicious. Food was perfect temperature. Waiter checked on us appropriately. We had a great experience and went ahead and splurges for dessert. We ordered fried ice cream for dessert and the kids meals came with ice cream and toppings bar. read more

Watermelon margaritas. A ton of vegetarian options. Free tequila shots. My husband and I had an amazing lunch at this location. The owner/manager welcomed us like old friends, introduced himself and his staff, and gave us great service. The fresh guac was amazing (literally huge chunks of fresh avocado and they omitted cilantro upon request), the vegetarian fajitas were amazing, and the watermelon margaritas made me forget it was freezing rain outside. I've only been here once but was a big fan. #1 most important thing about a Mexican restaurant for me is the chips and salsa. This place has perfect salsa that is spicy to perfection. Their chips are warm and have an excellent crunch. So that being said I already was pleased before even ordering. I got the steak fajitas. The dish was really good and included melted cheese on top which is a nice addition I was not used to. Everyone else seemed satisfied with their food as well but I can only speak for myself. Didn't get any drinks but their bar area looked nice and large. All I know is next time I want Mexican I will want to come here. I like thin crispy chips, but these were good. The food has great flavor. if you think jalapeño is spicy, then so is this. If you find habanero mild, this is definitely mild, but the flavor makes up for the lack of heat. The seafood chimichanga had a nice balance of seafood and cheese and spice... very yummy! it wasn't real crispy, but it wasn't mushy. 1. They charge $1.99 on to-go-orders. Why? I'm not sure, I read on one of these websites that they don't charge extra for carry-out. 2. I called back after I returned home & noticed this charge, and I have to admit that I was offended that I was charged when I have ate there many times in the past, I was never charged extra. I also tipped generously on to-go orders. 3. They replied that they don't apply this if you eat in. This employee stated that he worked there since they opened & his uncle (the owner) always insisted that they apply this charge. (If true, this is totally different that what I experienced). 4. I felt that they took advantage of me, being a regular customer & I always trusted them. They really treated me terribly, it was disrespectful. 5. $1.99 will not break me, but I think they're business practices are deceptive especially to a long time customer. Me and my girlfriend were looking for places to eat because we were bored of the same fast food in our local area. We've encounter about Hidalgo through apple maps and with a quick search of the reviews we found it was a well founded establishment. We arrived at the restaurant around 4:30 on a Sunday evening so it wasn't that busy. We saw that it had very beautiful artwork around the restaurant. We were seated right away and given chips. Salsa was good and although the cheese/chorizo dip was extra, it went perfect with the chips. Our server was very attentive and was very patient about taking our time. I ordered the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas while my girlfriend ordered the California burrito. Both our foods had taken about 10-15 minutes to cook. Everything was delicious and tasted amazing. At the end our server actually packed our leftovers for us which we considered amazing service. Although I haven't experienced the bar area, the dine in service was 10 out of 10. read more

Decided to check out this newer Mexican place and was happy to see it was pretty busy on a Thursday night. Sat at the bar and ordered queso to go with the chips and salsa. While the flavor was hood, it was runny like milk. We split an order of fajitas which was more than enough for use, but could have used an extra tortilla or two. While visiting DesMoines this weekend we came to this delicious yummy place! So reasonably priced and such a great portion of food. Everyone raved about what they ordered. Two ordered the Tacos De Carnitas and they loved the tender slow cooked pork topped with a delicious avocado, they also loved the refried beans. My husband had the chicken fajitas and ate every last morsel! They were seasoned amazing! I actually ordered off the menu and they totally accommodated my request. We've been to Hidalgo a few times now, and unfortunately after each visit we're less impressed. Initially the opposite was true; a nice restaurant layout with booths and tables surrounding an elevated bar, attentive servers, and the food was pretty good too. But with more visits the level of service and food quality has declined. On our last visit the service was spotty at best. Our server didn't have a very good grasp of English, and once we placed our order he pretty much disappeared. Our first food item, Queso to go with our chips, was cold. We told the server who apparently went back and microwaved it. Yuck. The rest of the dinner pretty much went downhill from there - all food served was lukewarm at best. Even the margaritas were watered down. And here's a tip; don't call me Amigo. It's condescending, especially when you're called that multiple times. This gets 3-stars because we have had some good meals there, just not recently. Give it a try. You might have a better experience than we did, but you can get a much better Mexican food dinner just a mile or two away at Mi Mexico. read more
