One thing Lynchburg, Virginia, isn't hurting for is Mexican food, and Fiesta Tapatia is just one of the many options in the Lynchburg area. Fiesta Tapatia has all your traditional Mexican fare and a lot of their own unique creations. This was my second visit, and today I got the lunch cheesesteak. One thing I love about this place is that their entrees are always super flavorful and well prepared. The steak on my cheesesteak was just bursting with flavor, and the cheese sauce was creamy and savory. The grilled onions and peppers were perfect as well. The only thing keeping me from giving this restaurant a high score is the fact that the salsa isn't my cup of tea. On my first visit, I panicked because I didn't like the salsa, so I thought I wasn't going to like my meal either, but I was definitely wrong. I ordered the Carne el Charral and steak, shrimp and chorizo were all amazing! The entree was great. I do have to admit that the salsa was better on my second visit but still not my favorite in the Lynchburg area. I will definitely be coming back to the restaurant in the future. We have been regulars at Fiesta Tapatia for more than 10 years now, ubut this evening will probably be our last visit, at least for a while. We have noticed during our last few visits that the food service is incredibly slow, especially on weekdays, and the quality of the dishes as well as the portions have been decreasing significantly. Tonight was an all-time low. When we arrived, there were three other filled tables in the restaurant, making our party of 7 table number FOUR. We waited 10-15 minutes before someone came to take our order, and then it was a good 30-40 minutes before our food started coming out. Our waitress was great. She refilled our drinks and the chips and salsa and kept checking back with us, but the fact the food took SO LONG when they were clearly not busy was disappointing. Then, when the food did begin coming out, it took at least 5-7 minutes for all the dishes to come out of the kitchen because they came out individually. Weird, but ok. At least we had food! I had ordered Camarones Chipotle, and the shrimp was delicious and cooked to perfection, but the portions of rice (which was bland and had no vegetables in it like it used to and did not even seem fried) and beans left something to be desired, as did the fact that I had to ask twice for tortillas. My father received the saddest chalupa I've ever seen in my life...small and incomplete. My kids received quesadillas that tasted gross and had very little cheese on them. I was willing to overlook all of this as a bad night until the check came. Wednesdays at Fiesta Tapatia have been Kid's Night for a while now. It is advertised in their menu as being a free kids meal for each adult entree ordered (see attached picture). We had FOUR adults who all ordered meals and only three children. Anyway, when our checks arrived, only one kids meal was taken off our bill. The waitress basically dropped the ticket and ran off, so I went to speak with the manager. It took a while for him to appear, and when he did, I politely said that I thought that tonight was Kid's Night and that kids are for free with an entree purchase. I showed him our ticket with two entrees and two kids meals, and he proceeded to explain that the new manager had changed it so that there is only one free kids meal per table. I told him that's not what the menu says, and he said he knew and changed our bill, no apology. Fine. Whatever. Then, I mentioned that he might want to convey to the new manager that raising prices (the meal I got is listed at $12.99 on their menu online, and we were charged $14.25 tonight), decreasing portions, extremely slow kitchen service, and policy changes like the Kid's Night are going to drive their older clientele off. The man just looked at me. I tried to explain further, thinking he didn't understand what I was saying, and said that I don't think we will be back because of this bad experience. He shrugged and said oh well. Well, sir, that right there guaranteed you won't see us and our families again. Fiesta has been our go-to for all family events -- birthdays, graduations, end of school celebrations, etc. We go almost every time we have family in town and often when we don't. Carlos was our favorite waiter and our kids talk about him and his lollipops often. (He was always sure to seat our kids so the could see a TV to watch cartoons, which made them love him. ) I guess we will be finding a new Mexican restaurant to frequent because we can forgive poor service and excuse bad food every now and then (especially with thoughtful staff like Carlos around), but complete apathy and disregard for the value of our patronage? I personally feel this place is far better than LaCa. The rice you can tell is freshly made, and the meat in the tacos is actually juicy instead of being bone dry. They have a fresh Guac stand where they make the guac which is also amazing. When I usually go here I get the Camarones ala diabla (which it pictured here). Great build-your-own burrito. Good size and thoroughly heated. They have a guacamole cart which was pretty neat, I'd never seen that before. It was a nice surprise to learn Tim would be in town tonight. I know Jess Lynn was happy to have a surprise visit by him over at her dad's and stepmom's. We had a nice, late, dinner with him here. We haven't eaten here in ages. I tried a different entree I've never had before. It was their Quesadilla La Mejor which is normally a vegetarian dish but I added shrimp to it and asked them to leave out the baby corn and added a side of rice. It had spinach, zucchini and mushrooms in it with a little sour cream drizzled on top. I also got a guacamole dip. Don got a combination dinner with a taco, a beef burrito with refried beans and rice. Tim got a seafood dish. I didn't take a picture of his but he posted a picture of it on his Facebook post. Our waitress was good tonight. Better than some others we have had in the past. I had more than half of mine to take home so we can make another dinner out of it. So first impression for me is the decor is a little bit done on the cheap, which is ok but it gives a cheap impression coming in. I did check out the bathroom and it looks like it's from a totally different restaurant, like they ran out of money when they got to remodeling the restrooms. They were clean for the most part, drain pipe under the sink was visible and showed signs of a leak. Got our salsa and it's ok, don't get the feeling it was fully made from scratch. Also has the texture of a ragu that was modified into salsa. A few of the chips are burnt as well, not enough to really matter. Very cold in here today, I like it cold but it is even chilly for me. Ordered the lunch fajitas Texas. Nothing great here, shrimp was cooked well, but not much flavor. The steak was tough and a little stringy, definitely not the quality I would hope for. Some pico would have been nice with this as well as guacamole. I know these are extra at some places but I have also seen some of the more popular Mexican restaurants offer at least small portions with this same dish. Drink refills were not bad. I don't know how I've missed this place for so long but I came here on a recommendation from my sis-in-law. The place looks pretty small from the outside, but it is quite large. Tables or booths. The menu is extensive and the place looks like it was assembled from pieces of some restaurant that closed, decorations, booths and layout. The food is decent but toned down a lot for the local taste. I ordered fish tacos, and the waiter asked "Mexican or American Style". Is there an American Style fish taco? Mexican meant cabbage vs. lettuce and tomato. My companion had a combination plate which she deemed tasteless. The meat was poorly spice and the beans were bland. We ordered some guacamole, which needed serious onion and salt. It did have some tomato, but again- for the Lynchburg palate. My tacos came out with not fish, but shrimp and scallops. Might have been fatal for someone with a shellfish allergy. We waited a long time for a drink service and a long time for a menu. The hostess who seated us scowled the whole time. Absolutely love this Mexican restaurant. It certainly rivals the local chain (La Carreta) and personally I prefer it. At first glance, it seems like a hole in the wall establishment but the portions are huge, price is great and food is super tasty. My friends and I eat there regularly and have yet to be served something that was sub par. They bring chips and salsa to every table for no charge, the service is super nice and you get your food very quickly. Either way, Fiesta Tapatia is a fun place, but their food could use some work. During my first visit, I was ecstatic to see Menudo and Ceviche on the menu. So of course I ordered it! The Menudo's flavor was there, but it was apparent that they didn't clean the intestines as well as they should've, so the smell was rank! The Ceviche... oh the Ceviche... it was WARM and dressed in ketchup! That's all I have to say about that... (If you eat ceviche, then you understand my gripe). Other items aren't too bad. This is one place that made a decent tamale. Not the best that I've had, but better than those I have had in good ole Lynchburg. What is good is the service and selection of drinks. Ordered take out and the food arrived cold. Fine. I tried to blame it on being delivery. But then I get into my enchiladas and the ground beef is full of large pieces of fat, grease, and burnt bits. Very little flavor in the sauce and beef but plenty of cheese on top which accounts for the second star. Queso wasn't much better - very little flavor and large gross chunks that didn't melt down when reheated. Salsa was far too blended and, like everything else, had very little flavor.
