Brisket sandwich is bomb. So are the cocktails. I'd like the macaroni to be creamier. We enjoy the ambiance of this place. Staff is friendly.

Pulled pork and coleslaw were delicious. Fries were spiced just right. Take a ride along the river for an excellent dining experience.

BBQ chicken was dried out and the sides were not edible. I was hoping for some good take out but would not order from here again.

Good food and excellent service. First time eating in this restaurant since Wheatberry bit the dust. New owners are doing a good job.

Meats were nicely done with a good light smoke flavor, the sausage, I enjoyed good texture and seasonings with jalapeño.

They were doing a NOLA-themed menu, so we started out with a Sazerac which was DELICIOUS. We ended our meal with Spanish coffee, equally delicious even though our mixer said she'd never made one before. In-between, we enjoyed tuna tartare, oyster bisque, Cajun walleye with hush puppies, a smoky Cajun gumbo, beignets with chocolate sauce and an Argentine malbec. All EXCELLENT!!! If you haven't been to the Historian, you're missing out. Great food, friendly service, nice vibe and decent prices.

It was refreshing to peruse an interesting small plates menu which we would definitely go back to try on a future visit. There is also a traditional menu as well as a special menu on weekends prepared by a guest chef featuring international cuisine. We tried the "Thai Night" menu and especially enjoyed the vegetarian potstickers in a delicious Thai sauce and the noodle salad with shrimp. The flavors were layered, with a delicate creamy texture and just the right amount of spice. There is a parking lot on site and reservations are a must on weekends, although an early arrival might get you a nice spot at the bar!

6/14 update: I was ready and waiting past few days but police never came after owner said he filed…read morethe police report Monday (result of him claiming credit card didn't work). On Tuesday pm, he messaged requesting my zip code when he learned he needed it after trying the credit card info I had given him Saturday for the first time (per credit card report). He said it still didn't work. I tried the card and it worked fine. I did not want to give info on another credit card so sent a payment by certified mail and contacted him with another request for the itemized bill and the police report info (dept/officer/report #) which he had previously said he would provide after he was paid. Owner said thanks for the payment and "so privileged " of me to ask for that info (bill and police report info). He threatened and tormented me for a week ie the video was playing on 3 police websites (Michigan State PD, Sheriff, and Buchanan PD) even though all I wanted to do was pay. Please BEWARE my friends. 6/10 Update: owner says he filed police report; he admits to poor service and says the food complaint is "laughable." He says I will have to come in person to settle up (after all his threats and intimation-not happening!). The credit card info I already gave him Saturday is confirmed to be valid. I am carrying the physical credit card with proof it is valid and proof of attempt to pay to give to the police. He decided to put the burnt ends back on the bill that he previously removed according to the messages but still no itemized bill received. I am still interested in getting this resolved asap and never had an issue with paying but the service and food and lack of a bill not acceptable. I need to know which officer/dept to contact to resolve this. Worst dining experience ever. Odor of weed noted inside restaurant entry as we entered. We were the only customers in restaurant at prime time on a Friday night. The "burnt ends" were lightly grilled fat chunks smothered in bbq sauce-we reported this to the cook who had brought it to the table and who noticed the food was barely touched when he took the plate away. He did wipe off one of the three serving plates that were wet with something when he brought the plates and served the "burnt ends" to the table. We explained the burnt ends were unsatisfactory and he made no apology or attempt to rectify, walking away with the plate without saying a word. The dazed inattentive waitress asked us to repeat our orders 3 times on everything as she wrote the order down and still the order was wrong in many ways (server and cook errors). It took a long time for food to be prepared. Two of the 3 meat orders were the same when we ordered. The waitress said at first only one was prepared and then the cook made the second one but it only had 2 of the 3 meats ordered in it. The sides were incorrect too. The entrees were improperly cooked and not edible. We asked for the bill. The server brought a credit card reader instead and every item said "Custom amount" with no description given and no paper bill was offered . Menu math was less than the custom amounts on her credit card reader. I asked the server to bring an itemized paper bill. The waitress left the table and did not return at all. We waited for her to return with the bill for a long time. No other staff found. Started feeling nauseous and left $20 cash on the table with the intent to contact the owner to settle up. The waitress was seen loitering /chatting at the back of the parking lot as we left- not obtaining the itemized paper bill I requested. I guess she/they took the pictures of the cars leaving the parking lot to post on Facebook with their accusation. I responded to the Facebook post identifying myself and was in contact with the owner who happens to be the cook who had not been helpful at the restaurant. He wanted to settle this privately (as I continued to be slaughtered online by his Facebook friend court ie must not have been able to afford the food after visiting the 25 pot shops in town) and by phone call. I agreed to privately resolving but communicated by messenger instead of phone call because I wanted written documentation. He proceeded and threaten me and intimidate me, refusing to provide an itemized bill or remove his Facebook post until I paid the bill. He threatened to release the video of us there which hopefully includes audio of the burnt end fat globs sliding off the fork and our comments of how disgusting the food was. I would also be heard questioning if the owner was aware that the food and service was so bad because this was bad for the business. The ribs were tough, flavorless and looked like they came out of a boiling pot. After the threats and intimidation paused, I explained that I had wanted to try his restaurant ever since it opened and was excited to be trying it when I arrived. He then apologized saying "I'll delete the post we'll figure everything else o
