It was clean, well shaded, had running water available, and even the human portapotties were clean and in the shade (a miracle!). The dogs that were there with us were well behaved and the owners seemed to be paying attention and interacting with them, always a good sign. On the way back, we parked at the little pond and walked around for a little while. It was a little too warm to do multiple laps, but it was a great view and, again, very clean. I think we'll be making Byrd Park a regular part of our journey from now on.

The playground has well-constructed equipment, many of which is differently-ambled-friendly. There are also nice porch-swing-like bench swings for parents to chill out on. There are bathrooms that are well maintained and clean. Trails are well maintained and expansive. Plenty of Ingress/Pokémon Go/Wizards Unite stops. Ice cream trucks (plural) visit frequently, particularly in the summer months. Even though it's located in a developed area, Huguenot Park feels like it is the middle of untouched nature.

There is so much to explore here and offers something for every level of stepper. Whether you're looking for an intense hike or just a leisurely stroll, this is a great spot to be. The park has multiple entrances and different access points which would make multiple visits here still feel fresh. The park is very hilly and has a lot of inclines so keep that in mind. Once you get down to the park you'll be greeted by the lake trail where you can walk in a loop around the stunning lake. You can also do catch and release fishing here which I saw multiple people doing. While the lake trail is paved, this park also has a variety of cobblestone and natural trails as well. The walks are pretty shaded and all have stunning views of either greenery or some water component. This is a great walking spot if you're wanting to really dive into nature and experience some stunning views. This is definitely a more mild intensity walk mainly because of the inclines, they also have stair entrances to get on the trail as well. There were quite a few people on the trail, consisting of families, groups and even solo walkers. Despite its almost secluded nature this park felt relatively safe with the amount of people present. You may want a trail buddy if veering into the natural trails but the paved lake loop was pretty open making it feel safe for solo walkers. Overall, with its variety of entrances, views, and the moderate challenge, this park is a great choice for regular walkers and nature lovers!

It is nice, quiet, peaceful and they always have interesting activities for adults and children alike. They also have a free library and sell firewood. The bathrooms are spotless. The employees are by and large very friendly and helpful (with exception of the young female ranger who told my sister in law "You have legs! You can hike, can't you?" She may want to brush up on the Americans with Disabilities Act and learn not to be so, as they say "ableist") I also love their gift shop. They have fun t-shirts, pins, stickers etc. I look forward to coming back--I love this park and Powhatan.

The often-overlooked Wetlands is a great spot to start/end a hike or run. Part of the James River…read morePark System (JRPS), this portion of the park is sandwiched between the Willow Oaks Country Club and much more popular Pony Pasture section of JRPS. I find that the trails are really well maintained in this section of JRPS. Despite the name, even after some rain, the trails are generally in runable condition. It's not huge, but offers several trails that probably total up to a couple of miles. It's well shaded to be nice in the warmer months and also has access to the James River. Street parking is available on Landria- I've always been able to find a space, though it does get pretty busy on weekends in the warmer months. The trails connect with the trails in the Pony Pasture section, providing the opportunity to get in a nice 3-4 mile loop on all trails. You can also add on some more miles by running or walking with picturesque river views along Riverside Drive.

Recently visited Leakes Mill Park because I just had to get outside and get active! Mid-afternoon…read moreon a cold weekday and there were only 3 other cars in the lot, which made me feel like I had the place to myself. There are fields, a playground, and mountain biking/hiking trails - the mountain bike trail is something like 8 miles? It's a lot of switchbacks which if you're hiking them - can get a little redundant BUT I suggest you stay on them until you familiarize yourself with where you're at. There is also a graveled walking path that I believe is a 1.8 mile loop if you choose not to do the actual trails. There's a pretty creek that runs through one park of the park where the ruins sit. There's plenty of picnic tables, benches and workout equipment throughout the trails too which is really nice. I can't wait to take my pups back here.
