Another great Virginia State Park. This park is right on the James River. Actually the Native name for the James River was in fact the Powhatan River! You've got some great camping spots here. Some are probs 20 feet from the river. The trails are well maintained and well marked like all other Vastateparks. I was a happy hiker here. Great trails, some sunny, some shady, and the River trail is just that; A trail alongside the James. Bike riding here also! Powhatan State Park offers access to the James river via boat launch, tubing and fisbing. * DYK that the James River is the longest river in Virginia? 340 miles and ends in the Chesapeake Bay. So pack it in, pack it out, leave no trace! #savethebay.

When Powhatan State Park opened in 2013, its 1,600 acres became Virginia's 36th state park. The parkland was originally part of the nearby Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center including 320 acres of fields that were farmed by prison inmates for crops and hay. Today folks from across the region flock to this attractive neck along the James for swimming, tubing, and hiking. ‍

Great trails, very lush in summer!

My wife and I are moving to the area and thought we would check out this park. Walking away, I cannot believe that proximity to this park wouldn't be listed on every home listing because, truly, I feel it would raise the value of the home. Beautiful trails, gorgeous historical river for kayak/paddle boarding, friendly faces and seemingly endless trails. We cannot wait to live a few short miles down the road, and utilize this for years of fun (and dog walking!) to come. 6/5 stars.

It is well positioned within walking distance of the county library, the YMCA, and the soccer fields. It boasts lovely walking trails, a frisbee golf course (which while usable could use some TLC), a lovely little creek with a charming covered bridge to cross it, and a multi-tiered playground which is among my favorite playgrounds in the surrounding counties because of it's lovely rural setting, its shade from the tree coverage, its new playground equipment, and its easy proximity to the creek area. We have an easy time navigating with a range of kids. Parents can position themselves between the playground where the younger kids can play, and the creek where the more nature-oriented kids want to explore, while it's safe enough for the teens to venture up to the library or to hike through the network of easily navigable trails. There are two covered picnic areas with grills. There are benches at the playground areas. In a delightfully educationally inspired move, the gardens and forests closest to the playgrounds and trails have their flora labeled so you can learn about the plants in the area. There is a texture garden near the parking lot with plants designed to touch and feel. One of the trails is an exercise trail with equipment stations for pull-ups, balance beam, and other outdoor workouts. Just a delightful spot right where you'd least expect it.

It's not very large and definitely not your typical park i.e. with tons of seating and a children's play area. This is more of a fishing off the dock and hopping into a boat park. As you enter the you'll notice benches w/ seats - this is such a great area for catching up on your novel. This area will shade you from the scorching sun rays. I enjoyed reading a book and meeting locals. Most people came to fish, run, and for the scenic walk. The benches on the dock/walkway are metal so if you're planning to sit and hang bring something to lay over the metal before you sit - it may burn your bum!

I love that the whole park is sprawled over a marshy creek and there a boardwalk meandering through it. And guess what?? The boardwalk has been extended all the way to the next neighborhood. Now there are two entrances winding around this rustic, reedy park. It's a bird watchers delight... not to mention some other little critters. Today I came on a crisp, cold day to get some fresh air, exercise and then settle on a bench and read, while soaking in nature and and reflect on the constraspects of the current pandemic. Perfect place to gain positive perspective! My favorite park!

Here, you get it all--shade sail covering the adult area with many picnic tables, a separate patio area for adults with chairs, a giant playpen-like structure with a bouncy ball in it and lined with garage tiles for safe falls for younger toddlers. There is a play set for younger kids and for older. I would say about age 3 to about 8 or 10. There is a car on a spring that rocks; a big, spiral slide, straight slights, a fake climbing mountain with seats on top, and tons and tons of options to climb and swing, including a jungle gym and even spiral-style monkey bars (they go in circle, rather than just in a straight line. There's a balance beam, different types of swings, and really everything you could possibly want. All that's missing is the kids, really. Absolutely amazing place. The greatest likelihood to catch other kids to play with is before lunchtime. The only downside is that there is zero shade on the actual playground itself. Very important note: This place is public and at the back of a church parking lot. Turn in right beside the blue library sign, and drive alllll the way back. You cannot see the playground from the street at all, not even upon turning into the lot.

It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once.
