Whiner Beer Company is located in a pretty interesting building in Back Of The Yards. Has other things to check out when not having a few cold ones. There's also a limited menu of pizza. Coming in here it seemed like it would be a great place for banquets and gatherings. It's located in the building known as The Plant. There were only a few people here and it seemed pretty quiet. A lot of people just don't know about it. The beers are the best things but it also has more. A lot of the beers seem to have a theme about care. It's about $7 a pint. Best of the ones we had was the Miaou. This is a dry hopped Belgian style wheat. Hoppy while still being not too hoppy. There's also pizza. Kind of limited and expensive. The pizza mostly has meaty toppings. Has to be one of the most interesting places in this pretty rough area. It's pretty cool to come when the rest of the vendors here are open. They're closed Mondays to Wednesdays.

She responds that you should have still called in not sure why you wouldn't call us! I said is this part of your policy where one has to call before coming in? she says no, and proceeds to say, you could have called in. At this point, I'm upset I asked to speak to the manager. He came with the same attitude with a fake concern, and then they offered to give me credit not even a refund. I had pictures of the blood nasty chicken sold. He said, "we cook many chickens some are going to turn out bad like the one you purchased". UNPROFESSIONAL. It's so unfortunate that I have to go to a different store now because of this experience when I live so close by.

They even stock some healthier food labels now and while their produce section may not be the freshest - it's some of the cheapest I've found (though I stick to the canned goods for price and flavor). A word of advice: the shopping carts take a 25-cent deposit (which you get back when you lock it back up) and if you don't bring your own grocery bags from home, be prepared to pay $0.10 each for ALDI's plastic shopping bags (good news is they're really strong and fit a bunch). I was shocked to see that this ALDI hadn't made it to Yelp yet - so I'm certainly adding it because it's nice to have an ALDI that's quick to get to by bus (it's along the #47).

Visiting Filbert's bottling plant/warehouse on Ashland is a unique experience, to say the least. As the sign pictured here on Yelp notes, the actual entrance isn't on Ashland itself per se. Instead, it's perpendicular to the street, just off of a small parking lot. From the lot, visitors enter via a short staircase onto a loading dock. (Alternatively, it seemed like you could also enter through an additional storage and loading area towards the back of the parking lot, if stairs were an issue. Definitely call ahead if you have any accessibility questions or concerns). Once inside, from the perspective of looking into the warehouse from the loading dock, there are three things to see: To the left, a live bottling line; to the right, along the back wall, a display of historic drinking containers; in the middle, dozens of pallets of freshly made Filbert pop. ...and that's about it. There's no receptionist. There's no signage (that I noticed). There's no retail space. You're just in the middle of a small warehouse. It may not feel right at first, but you've found the correct place, in all of its light industrial glory. Filbert's is an active work space and you may need to wait a moment to catch anyone's attention. A couple of minutes after my arrival, one of the guys in the warehouse offered up a spare case and there was no rush or pressure while browsing cases of pop for sale. With a few exceptions (notably, ginger beer: $1 each), each 12oz glass bottle is $0.50 and you're welcomed to create mixed cases of whatever is available. A small shelf held a few popular flavors in larger sizes as well. Filbert's line includes well over a dozen pops ("sodas", as I'd call them back home...), but the Draft Root Beer is the centerpiece. While I didn't bother to confirm whether or not every flavor was in stock, it seemed like most were. Depending on the day, you might be able to find out a little more about the company or get to check out the line. Be forewarned though: there is not a formal tour or anything of the sort, so your experience may differ from that of fellow Yelpers. As far as the sodas themselves? There wasn't one among the eight that I selected and didn't like, but none that I'd add to my 'must-try' list either. The most pleasant surprise might have been either of the lemonade (a tart, refreshing, snappy version that made me wonder why carbonated lemonade wasn't more popular) or the blueberry (a not-too-sweet fruit-flavored drink with a clean, fresh finish). For those so concerned, many of the drinks here are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (per their labels), although the ginger beer uses cane sugar. read more

The best of the best! We really love Filberts and have had them in our retail store for many years. We love ALL their flavors but our favs are Ginger Bear, Root Beer, Watermelon, Pineapple, Green Apple -- but any of them are great! Much better than the pop in stores.
