Update: I contacted them through ig and told them about this. Customer service was excellent and they were apologetic and said that batch was incorrectly made. ------------------------- The bangsilog was okay. So as the beef pares mami. The tapsilog however was very peppery and my mouth is still burning. I don't eat spicy and peppery food. The beef had TOO MUCH pepper. I only had three spoonfuls, can't eat anymore.

I've been a fan of Filistix for a long time But I've only ever eaten at their University location. I went to Filistix for downtown dining week this year And I was not disappointed. The sent meal for downtown dining week had three courses. There was also a pandesal Bread to start with served with a butter that taste better than just normal butter. They explained that they heat it to caramelize it. It was delicious. The first course was seared scallops in a sinigang broth. The scallops were done well and not over cooked at all. I shared the two entrée options with my dining companion. There was a grilled lobster tail on a creamy risotto and a steak in a kare kare peanut sauce Served with an Ube mash. both dishes were great. My favorite course was dessert. Dessert was Ube and mango crepes. This dessert was so good but I was so full from the other courses I had a very positive experience here service was great and the people that work there are very passionate about what they are doing which is great to see. Will definitely be coming again.

At home with my Christmas Noche Buena Feast for Two!

I'm very familiar with the quality Filipino food of Filistix. My work friends and I often enjoy their rice bowls for lunch. We usually go to the Filistix located in the Student's Union Building, on the University of Alberta campus. Today was my first time to try out some food from their downtown location. I was the super lucky winner of a Filistix Christmas Noche Buena (good night) feast for two. It was a contest Filistix had via Instagram. I was very excited to try out this special meal! I lined up outside the downtown location. The restaurant was closed for Christmas Eve but was open from 3-6pm for feast pick up. I had been instructed to come at 5:30pm to pick up my meal. When I arrived, I saw quite a few people in line. I waited in line for about 30 minutes. Only one person at a time could enter the restaurant due to social distancing/Covid precautions. When it was my turn, I was warmly greeted by Marc. I told him I had won the Instagram contest. I was given a bag with two feast meals inside. I was also given a card for a 10% discount on my next purchase. Marc was friendly and I loved how he was willing to pose while I took some pictures! When I arrived at home, I was able to see what I had won. The first meal was tender Beef Short Rib Calderetta (in tomato sauce with potatoes, carrots and fresh herbs) and the second meal was Pinakbet (vegetable stew with tomatoes, eggplant, long beans and bitter melon). I was also given sides dishes: Ube (purple yam) and truffle mashed potatoes, ginger scallion fried noodles, Atsara pickles (daikon, carrot, jicama, and red peppers) and green beans. Everything was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!! I happily devoured this meal. The flavours were so good!!! Filistix has fast, casual and yummy Filipino cuisine. If you're in the downtown area, I recommend trying out their food. I strongly advise supporting this local business!

Pork head and BBQ pork belly

Came here with some co-workers to check it out and we were not disappointed! It's a Filipino place which has a smaller lunch menu and then a larger sit-down dinner selection. We ordered 6 dishes to share: the chicken adobo, BBQ pork belly, a lemon chicken dish, "pork head", and two noodle dishes. The clear winner by far was the chicken adobo - delicious and we even finished up all the sauce poured over rice. Would definitely order this again. The other dishes were decent but the chicken adobo was really outstanding. For dessert I tried the pandan creme brulee and it was delicious - pandan is a leafy plant that gives the dessert a slightly nutty/floral flavour, fairly subtle, and it worked very well with the creme brulee custard. It wasn't too sweet but was definitely smooth and creamy. Co-worker who tried the banana spring rolls was also impressed. Overall good prices and tasty food, would definitely go back again. If it's your first time, you can't go wrong with the chicken adobo and some rice.

Tried the noche buena Christmas feast and there were some disappointments but a lot of highlights. Enjoyed the beef caldoretta because it is a rich beef stew with peppers. The sauce of the stew was full of flavour and seasoned perfectly. The atsara is a side dish of fresh pickled cabbage which was tangy and crunchy and would have perfectly accompanied the lechon roast pork belly. Unfortunately they were sold out of the lechon. The green beans side dish was cooked perfectly to keep the crisp texture of the beans. Nothing amazing but well executed. They sold out of a few other side options and replaced them with other options. The mashed potatoes with ube was interesting and purple but definitely didn't seem to have any truffle oil. Waiting outside in the cold for half an hour isn't ideal especially for take out which wasn't very hot and had to be warmed up once we got home. This is my first time eating here and there were some good flavours but I'll probably try their regular menu rather than the large set meals that cost $35-$45.

    Indonesian Kolak

This restaurant definitely is an Asian fusion restaurant not truly Southeast Asian food based. If you want to have an authentic Southeast Asian foods, this is not the place. Garlic Fried Rice was ok but it wasn't extraordinary. Very similar to regular Chinese fried rice. I tasted a better Filipino garlic fried rice in the past. Green Papaya Salad was too bland. They miss the sweet, slightly spicy, salty and sour balance that are the character tastes in most Green Papaya Salad in Southeast Asia. The Kolak dessert was terrible. By the look, it didn't look the normal kolak in Indonesia. The taste was like someone just dumped a can of evaporated milk and heated-up. Then mixed with slices of banana and raw sweet potatoes. Traditionally, kolak has the sweetness from coconut sugar, richness from coconut milk and fragrant aroma from pandan leaves. The server was trying to argue that coconut milk that was used for kolak. Meanwhile both of us came from 2 different countries that use lots coconut milk in the cooking. From the look and taste, we right away knew that evaporated milk was being used at that time. I know it's a fusion restaurant but giving a raw sweet potatoes in kolak was a disappointment. Will I go back? I might but I have to try different dishes before I decided not to go back.

    South Pacific Coconut Chicken

Friendly fast service during the lunch hour downtown. Ordered the South Pacific Chicken Coconut Curry which was hot and fresh. For $12, the chicken consisted of one palm-sized piece of chicken - so value-wise, would be nice if the portion was a bit larger. The chicken however was cooked to tenderness and the sauce was lovely. You order at the front, take a seat and grab your own utensils and water, etc. Space was bright and modern Also tried a slice of their banana bread as I can never resist it, but it was just okay - too sweet for my liking and slightly drier than anticipated.

It had a moody vibe with red ambient lighting and an upscale edgy sushi bar with really unique, oversized art all around. Prices were fair ranging between $12 - $35 per dish depending on what you order. Service was impeccable. Our hostess, server, and all of the staff in general were warm and friendly. Our server was able to articulate the specials and entice us to try the mango salmon roll which was smoky, creamy and tropical. Sushi tasted fresh as we also ordered the salmon sashimi. Watching the sushi chefs interact with each other and have fun while preparing such meticulous meals was entertaining and mouthwatering. My absolute favourite dish was the Rock Shrimp Tempura in a creamy spicy garlic chili sauce. These were perfectly cooked and the prawns were huge and juicy...came with a hearty salad underneath them too. The dim sum deserves a shout-out as well. We ordered the Truffle Lamb and Prawn Shumai Dumplings and it was the freshest dim sum I've ever had in Canada. Reminded me of when I was in Singapore. We will definitely return!!

I ordered the Curry Beef Brisket Noodle again during my second visit because the dish left a great impression on me during my first visit. The Curry Beef Brisket Noodle is a must-try and I definitely recommend this if you are visiting this restaurant. During my first visit, I did not have the chance to try their satay skewer and I decided to order a chicken satay skewer to try. The chicken satay was good. The meat was tender and nice, and not too burnt or tough unlike some of the satay that i tried. It came with a satay dipping sauce, but the sauce was not as good as I thought. Perhaps it did not contain peanuts due to possible allergy concerns so the sauce was not as fragrant as I expected satay sauce to be. But still it was good, and the skewer wasn't too expensive as well. Great restaurant and definitely one of the hidden gems in Edmonton.

And we also came with a very large group. Honestly they had all the reason to kick us out, but the staff took care of us regardless. Since we were late we just picked the soup broth and 5 add-on's. I got the Herb and Lamb broth. It was delicious, savory, and hearty. And for the add-on's, I picked the sliced Beef Sirloin, Enoki Mushroom, Napa Cabbage, Fried Tofu and Flat Rice Noodles. They didn't have Fried Tofu so I asked to substitute for Fried Bean Curd instead. Looking back at this now, I'm glad (and I'm sure the kitchen was too) that we only picked 5 things.
