Went in and got asked if we needed any help, I told the guy no thank you because I wanted to look around. After about 10 minutes of looking i ended up asking for help, I asked him a question and he said he had no clue what i was talking about. Uh, you work on an art store, how do you not know. He was extremely short with my husband and I then says "he had to go to the bathroom so we need to wrap it up". We were caught off guard and said okay. I paid for the two pens i had in my hand and we left. As we walked out he stood there and watched us walk down the street. Extremely odd. I guess we will be shopping online unfortunately. read more

I'm a recent transplant to the Long Beach Peninsula. I was in dire need of replacing some art supplies and found this wonderful store in Astoria. If there is anything any artist may need, this store has it. The store is thoughtfully designed and equipped with EVERYTHING! Prices are reasonable and they have great sales. We came here just to look around because we had been here in the past and we had always had good experiences. I went with my brother and his girlfriend and my sister. We walked in and immediately the guy behind the counter was being pushy about helping us find things; we kept trying to tell him we were just looking around, but he was having a hard time letting it go. The whole time we were being very friendly to the man working, but he continued to stare us down the whole time we were shopping. We all felt so uncomfortable that we decided to leave. The crazy part is that as we walked back to our car, he came outside with us and stood outside of the door, watching us walk back. He continued to watch as we got into our car and drove off. Overall, it was a really horrible experience and made us all really uncomfortable. The old owners were always so nice to us so it is really sad that the new owners are like this. read more

On vacation in Astoria and needed art supplies.the guys there (guessing they are proprietors) were very helpful with my watercolor paper selection and sketchbook selection. They even cut my paper for me to two different sizes and gave me cardboard to help me transport it back home. Additionally they have me info for the artist studio event happening this weekend. I loved this little art supply shop, tucked away in a small town on the coast of Oregon. The owners were friendly and helpful, and didn't mind at all helping me find highest-quality oil colors for the lowest price. They pointed out a brand that was on sale, one that was good but that I had not considered before due to the higher cost, and showed me which paints in that line were actually a better value than the "bargain" brand, thanks to their 40%-off sale. They kindly explained the different grades, numbers, and pigment levels (I'm just starting out, so this was helpful to me). When we return for a visit to Astoria, we'll be going back for more. :) read more

Such a nice and well-run store! We were so impressed by the layout and how well organized everything was, everything tidy and clearly marked. We were tourists out for a day in Astoria, and ended up buying a few things and chatting with owner (?) Scott. He was so helpful, offering canny advice about different products. We got a great lunch recommendation, and he even printed out a map for us of the trolley line! Man, I doubt if the tourist info office could have done a better job of welcoming us to Astoria. It's weird when you can't get a clerk to STOP helping. I came in search of colored pencils and didn't realize, after I'd circled around, checking out other stuff, that I'd missed the aisle against the wall on the right as you come in. So I asked in some confusion, because the store is so well-stocked and well-lit and spacious, if they had pencils. The clerk came out from behind the desk, walked me down the aisle, waving left, waving right, and saying they were here ... and here ... there, there, there ... more up here, lots down there, other kinds right there ... all the way down the full length of the aisle while I expressed my understanding and appreciation seven or eight times. The pencils are in THIS aisle? OK! Thanks! Great! Got it now, thanks! He did this with a complete absence of sarcasm. I asked about pencils? He showed me pencils. And showed me and showed me and showed me until he KNEW his job was done. So if you're looking for pencils, HAVE NO FEAR! They've got pencils! read more

My experience was less than perfect here. I had come into get some paint to make a poster. Some purple paint, that simple. I had grabbed a thing of paint and I took off the cap to see if it had the paint color brushed on the top of the lid so I knew what it looked like on white. The paint had been opened and looked about half used. A worker then walked by and said 'Please don't take the top off the paint.' Well I didn't think anything of it since I probably would have done the same thing. Then I went up to the counter to ask a few questions on what kind of paint I would need. The man then proceeded to say 'The paint you opened up over there is not the kind you'd want.' VERY well.....shitty like. I blew it off and didn't say anything but THEN he asked who needed the paint and my dad said 'My daughter needs it for a poster for some community work.' And the man then said 'Well how old is your daughter?' A normal question. And my dad responded with 'Well she's right here. She's 15.' The man then insisted FOUR different times throughout our next 10 minute conversation that my father was wrong. That I was my dad's wife and my dad didn't know what he was talking about(his exact words). So as much as I would have liked my first experience at this shop to be as awesome as the other people say there's was, I sadly did not get that. I hope next time I go in there, if I do, it'll be different. read more
