This review is for my Level 1 instructor, Erica. Our class lasted seven weeks (two hours a class) and had two shows in front of an audience. Erica was caring, encouraging, and funny. She should have instructed us more, though: Being specific about how to make our scenes better. Mostly, we did scene after scene without much specific feedback, so I'm not sure I progressed. Improv classes help with interpersonal skills, public speaking, confidence, and so much more. You take classes, get to leave the stresses of the world at the door, and PLAY! You will start to make friends and laugh more which can help extend your life too. If you want to see shows, Thursdays are fun because there is a cage match where you can vote for your favorite team and there is a jam later in the evening where you can get up on stage in a safe/welcoming environment. Fun, funny, fantastic! As the voice of a long standing comedy show, I've been lucky enough to see a wealth of excellent stand-up comedy. A couple of things I've learned along the way are that comedy comes in all shapes and sizes, and that laughter is truly in the mouth of the listener. While purely improvisational comedy might not be as polished as a rehearsed stand-up routine, Finest City Improv shines and delivers the laughs again and again. One of the things that stands out here, is the welcoming atmosphere. And I don't mean welcoming in the literal sense like a welcome from a front door host/hostess, as you won't find that here. But FCI accomplishes this by doing almost the opposite. You'll pretty much be able to move freely about the space as if it was your own; if you don't bother anyone nobody bothers you-and that includes heckling. The Hillcrest vibes run true as all are accepted here; their "pay what you can" policy on nearly all of their shows, really reinforces their "no barrier to entry" mentality. Other shows are typically about $10. I love that when I see a show here, I really feel as if I'm sitting in my living room watching my favorite TV show--LIVE!!! Shows are usually in 1 hour blocks with about 40-45 minutes of improv (2-3 skits) followed by a 15-20 intermission between shows. The intermissions are a perfect time to grab drinks/snacks from the bar, or step outside to have a smoke. Unlike some other comedy shows, there are in and out privileges and no drunk minimums. Beverages include about 5-6 craft brews on draft, a couple of hard teas, one of two hard kombuchas, waters, and soda. Snacks are basically chips and they may have some candy as well. Shows are only Thursday through Sunday from about 7-11:30pm. Check the website for specific ensembles and show times. I recently took the free improv class with "SURFIN TYLER" and it was AWESOME! No matter what your profession, thinking on your feet is an amazing skill to add to your arsenal. The class was 2 hours long, was "pay what you can" (suggested donation $15), and was really a fun and exciting way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I highly highly recommend signing up for the class; do it with friends, do it with a date. The vibe of the class is again, very welcoming, and mistakes are celebrated so don't be shy. One thing I was told to do in San Diego before I left was to check out Finest City Improv, after reaching out to them on Instagram, I got a prompt response about when they were having shows and Improv Jams and made plans to visit accordingly. I was in love with all of the Pride and #BLM decor throughout the lobby, I immediately felt a sense of inclusiveness that I've seen lacking in other improv comedy spaces. I participated in an Improv Jam as well as watched their Improvised Harry Potter / Dungeons and Dragons Improv show. I had so much fun and everybody that performed was super friendly after the show. They even let me leave one of my "Sonicjeb Eats" stickers up on their drink fridge. I'm so glad I got to spend a night of fun here, and I hope to be able to visit again (or maybe even take an impov class or workshop, the next time I'm in town.) read more

Found this location last minute as my brother was in town. They were hosting a free amateur improv night and we decided to check this location out. They have a very quaint, but nice location near Balboa Park. When you walk in lobby is decorated along with display of some merchandise and they have an in-house bar. A great way to have a drink or two before any show that you're seeing there. Improv was great for it being a free show that they take donations for. Most of the attendants were friends or family of the actors, but my brother and I highly enjoyed our experience. Typical anything that amateur level there were things that were flat and there were other things that were hysterical. Overall, I think this is a great venue and would highly recommend any locals that are looking for a low cost but highly entertaining evening to check out. Such a unique fun spot, a hidden gem in Hillcrest that I didn't even know was there! My boyfriend had a friend that was performing improv so we went to support her. I really didn't expect to have such a great time, but it was! We had dinner nearby, and then walked to the venue. They have a bar right when you walk in with some seating so you can have a drink while you wait for the main room to open up. The main room where the comedians perform is somewhat small and intimate. I loved it. We watched some great improv and everyone there was laughing! We ended up hanging around and had another drink at the bar after the show too. It was great to see how many people were regulars and I see my boyfriend, and I being the same! It was very inexpensive for tickets! They have a little donation box on the outside of the main room too and I think they may run completely on donations, if I recall correctly. It was super fun, different, low cost, in a great area with tons of restaurants, they have their own bar....it's just a win all around! read more

Went here to support a friend in the level one improv class. Non-stop laughs for their entire set. The space is quite small, which is good for the acoustics and such. The improv-ers weren't mic-ed, but we sat in the back and could hear them just fine. It was a donation based ticket system, which was really nice because I paid my donation and was able to see two classes of improv (about 1h 15ish minutes maybe). By the end of both the level one and level three classes, I thought this place was a great community building spot. Finest City is known for its long-form improv, which gets its humor from the relationships the characters create instead of thinking of short gag bits. So it's a bit like watching a sitcom unfolding before your eyes-- for that matter, a lot of sitcom and most TV sketch writers got their start in improv (see Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, etc). Performances are Weds thru Sat and usually a combo of indie teams/classes/ and their house teams. It also offers classes at this location and an auxiliary training center. You might think learning improv is a high-stress competitive event, but it's not. It's actually one of the BEST things you can do for yourself-- it helps you communicate better, have better more empathetic interpersonal skills, and (somewhat counter-intuitively) calms anxiety. Yes, being on an improv stage will actually help you conquer anxiety! (There are lots of articles about this; Google it). Why? Because you learn to let go of how you THINK things should be and accept them for how they ARE. Deep, right? In improv you have to react to what's going on in front of you instead of clinging onto an idea you constructed in your mind. Everyone supports each other (in fact it won't work well if people are weird and negative and competitive; and the culture just doesn't tolerate that kind of thing so those people quit pretty early on, I think). There are also a wide range of ages in the classes. Finest City just moved to its new prime Hillcrest location, basically between the Rite Aid and the bank. Park on the street (the alley has free parking) or you can pay at the lots (the bank turns into paid parking after business hours). They're working on their beer/wine license but they have a ton of snacks, sodas, and healthy drinks like kombucha. read more

We stopped by and saw a late night improv show. To my knowledge, some of the groups that perform are part of their classes at the improv school. I felt like them charging up $12 a ticket was a little steep for a show that is by students. We had a good time though. I think I would definitely come back and check out some of their other improv shows. Some of the people really funny while others are less funny. Parking sucks in this area- we were lucky to have found some street parking after circling the block for 10 minutes. read more

I have been fortunate enough to have been to see Second City Improv in Toronto and I have to admit, these .... um improvers(?) are on the same level. Nice little waiting area where you can buy snacks and drinks..beer and White Claw even! The theater has a small but comfortable seating area. We sat through two great performances but had to leave early due to other plans. I would defenatly recommend checking out shows here. You never know... you might get to see someone that goes on to Saturday Night Live. read more

This spot adds a little more character to the North Park area with its intimate and fun setting. The small improv theater is part of a hotel and has its own small bar. The show tickets are fairly cheap and you can walk into a show at any time. They have teams that perform regularly and some special guests as well. I would definitely recommend popping in on a show - especially if you've never experienced an improv show before and want a good little laugh at some goofy scenes. They also host some improv classes and I look forward to trying those out eventually. read more

I live in North Park and never knew about this space, how bad of a neighbor am I? It is right by the Lafayette Hotel -- connected, I believe, and it's a tiny space, but a lot of fun. When it comes to performance art sometimes the smaller spaces make you enjoy it more. We saw a show featuring some comedians from Second City in Chicago and the sketches were fun. They serve booze and food here as well. My mojito was strong and refreshing and while I didn't eat off the menu, the selections seemed to be several notches up from the bar food I would expect. There was information in the lobby regarding classes and workshops and the owner had mentioned a possible Improv Festival, which would be cool. Glad someone guided me to this little gem. read more

My wife and I went here last night to see the group "Director's Cut" perform Remember The Titans. We were very impressed with the layout of the club and with the two emcees, and thought we would be in store for a good night of improv. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed with the show that was put on by Director's Cut. I have seen a decent amount of improv before, and this was the worst performance I had seen, mainly because of their seeming lack of organization. Multiple times they broke character, and often it didn't seem clear who was leading the scene shifts --- a couple of times it seemed like one person wanted to go one way and another another way. We wanted to walk out half way thru their performance, but out of respect for the hard job they do (it takes a lot of courage to get up on a stage for 60 minutes) we stayed until it was over. I don't know if Director's Cut was just having a bad night, or if this was a typical performance of theirs, but I will be avoiding them in the future.. I want to like this club, and I might give this club another chance in the future; but if I do, I'll be going at a time when a different troupe is performing. read more

I'm a new student at FCI. I signed up to develop better improv skills between songs (I'm a singer). I took an "Intro to Improv" class with Kat Brown and had SO MUCH FUN! Her passion for improv and teaching was awesome. I signed up for Level 1 classes and am starting Level 2 soon. I can honestly say that FCI has changed my life. I've been to a bunch of improv theaters across the country and I've been at FCI for 3+ years now. Finest City stands out because they are focused on building a community and camaraderie with the people walking through the door. By no means are they perfect (No improv theater is), but they have an open mind and have the flexibility to improve and grow with society. As a performer, you can find stage time to perform if you are around. As a student, its a great training center with most stage performance opportunities than any other school in San Diego. Finest City Improv is one of those great places where even if it's your very first time visiting- you still feel like you've been there before. The atmosphere the staff and students and performers create for their audience is warm and welcoming. The laid back feel of the theater and the intimate setting makes you feel like a part of a family and that is ALWAYS a nice feeling in a big city like San Diego. Some shows here are performed by students, some by professional improvisers, both local and touring, and the level of support and audience participation is just fantastic. Local talent is definitely top notch, especially with a recurring musical improv duo called "The Hardy Boys" made up of Jesse Suphan and Kat Brown, who are two of the most hilarious and engaging performers I have seen in improv. Improv is one of those things that just witnessing gives you a sense of freedom and playfulness, so it's a perfect night out for a large group of friends to enjoy, or go on a date; even if you went alone, though, you would feel a sense of belonging here, though, as the staff and emcees and performers are very welcoming. I recently attended my first show here, and after witnessing how great an atmosphere this place exudes (awesome show, friendly folks, great drinks) I decided to sign up for a class. I just attended my first one and it was absolutely fantastic. It's a zone free from judgment, full of support and very liberating. Very professional but also laid back, so there's some this great combination of relaxed focus in the classroom. I'm looking forward to the shows they will be having, especially since I have learned the theater really gives back to its community and often does shows for local charity organizations. The classes are stretching and have been an awesome growing experience for me. I hope to continue through the whole program. You should def try this place. This review comes from a person who is jaded, has been in show business for nearly 30 years, and who has an active suspicion of improvisational theatre. Having said that, I think you owe it to yourself to take in at least three separate shows at Finest City Improv. After that, you will have a pretty good idea about that improv is, what Finest City gets into and whether you, like me, can be persuaded to not only like it but love it. I'm not saying that everything is perfect. Actually, part of the fun of improvisation is that no one (audience and performers) knows what's going on from moment to moment -- and sometimes what goes in is a train wreck. What this gives you is that unmistakable first-date feeling about every moment, good or bad. When you add them up, Finest City Improv and its various teams, performers and guest artists make the moments worth watching about 89% of the time. Have you had that kind of success on a first date before? I didn't think so. I also think it's worth noting that the train wrecks are often brilliant in their own right. In addition to the fine entertainment, there is a full bar and food available Hell, why not go on a first date there -- it could be refreshing to embrace the awkwardness like so many of the Finest City Improv performers do so well.. read more

Parking was a nightmare. We circled from blocks away from all sides for a good 15 minutes and saw NOTHING, but then, suddenly, a spot right in front opened up. I bet that doesn't happen often. Anyway, the place is tiny and most of the people there seemed to know each other. Not being part of the scene it felt a bit strange, but the people were nice and friendly. The problem was that when I was there the fire alarm was set off and it was a loooong time before it got turned off. It was ridiculously grating but people handled it well. I think because the people there mostly are there with or for friends, like we were, so we just waited it out. The show was awesome and I would definitely want to come back, as the problems we experienced were really abnormal. read more

The Seany Foundation had an event with Finest City Improv on Saturday June 3rd, 2017 and it was a BLAST! Kat and her team were amazing to work with! They did a great job with all of the planning and preparation for the event, BUT like the amazing improvisers they are, they were also great on their feet when plans needed to change. FCI were amazing with our population of kids. We are a pediatric cancer foundation and our kids require some extra care and attention. FCI were great with all of their extra needs, taking everything into account when teaching their classes. The kids had a great time. Not only were the classes fun and entertaining, it was great to see the kids break out of their comfort zones. To see some of the more shy and anxious kids truly having a great time. We would recommend these improv classes for any child, especially those who need a little push out of their comfort zone. And for our more active kids, this was another great avenue to let them shine and push themselves! And for the volunteer chaperones, it was wonderful to see all the kids take to it in different ways. The classes alone were amazing, but the improv performance that FCI put on was top notch! Put on a completely family friendly show for our kids, that was still amazingly funny for the adults to watch! We highly suggest you stop by and catch a show! You'll be glad you did!. My husband, his friend, and I were looking for something to do on a Saturday night, and I decided that improv was something that would be fun. I googled local improv clubs and Finest City came up so we booked tickets online, about an hour before the show. The theater itself is attached to the back of a hotel, and is small and a little old. When you walk in, there's a small bar and a very small little lounge area. The bar itself is pretty well stocked. I think it had decent prices (Husband paid) and the bartender was cool. The bar/lounge area is connected to a small theater room, which is kind of run-down, but suffices for most people's purpose there. It is a very intimate setting, which is nice, because it gives a lot of chances for audience participation, which really enhances the experience. I had a GREAT night, and so did my husband and is friend. His friend even went so far as to say that after being in San Diego for over 2 years, this may have been one of the most fun nights he ever had. The performers were, for the most part, hilarious and really gave their performances their all. We had a chance to participate in some of the skits, and it really made the whole experience so much funnier and more enjoyable for us. Also, our tickets were $12 a pop, but we got 2 and a half hours worth of show, which I thought was an amazing deal. It is a great place to go on a date or with friends, and if you don't want the night to end at 11, there are a bunch of places that you can wander to in the area after the show is over. First, I love this place, and I love the people. Now that I'm taking classes here (super fun and great way to inject some fun and playfulness into my week) I know a lot of the performers too. Here's what to expect for shows: -Each team (group of performers) has a different style and set up. It took a visit or two for me to understand the different formats. Funny from the get go. Much funnier once I knew what to expect. -It's an intimate (cozy? tiny?) theater behind the historic La Fayette Hotel & all street parking. -There's a bar and food available and you can order during the show using a little form at your table in the theater. Pretty cool. -It's all made up and inspired by a suggestion from the audience. The main point is to be entertaining, not necessarily literally incorporate the suggestion in every scene all night. Once I let go of wanting things to play out like a scripted movie, I now really appreciate and marvel at how quickly the performers make characters and relationships and funny situations appear out of nothing. -I generally find Friday and Saturday "teams" are strong and cohesive. I'm particularly a fan of "World According To..." Sunday has a few student groups starting off, which is great for us and amusing as an audience too. Great place for shows and even better for classes (because then these people become your friends!) read more

I took a free "Intro to Improv" class here before committing to a paid course. My teacher Kat was on fire! Her energy and enthusiasm for improv were so infectious, I instantly went home and signed up for Level 1. I've been attending classes here for a few months, and every time I leave this place I feel high on life. Maybe it's the lack of oxygen from hysterical laughter. Or maybe it's the alarmingly high levels of endorphins released during each class. Either way, I love it! I also love the people I've met in my classes and the teachers who made me feel free to be myself, be silly and learn while playing. I try to see at least a couple shows here every week (shows are Thursday - Sunday night.) The house teams are very high caliber and will make sure you have a good time. There's a great bar and a place to hang out and chat between the shows. While I get this is improvisation and the comedians are amateurs, still learning and appear to laugh at each other's performances because no one else does in the audience. Call it that and don't give this place a 4.8 average rating. Are all the students in the audience the ones giving these ratings? We saw 4 different teams perform and only one of the four actually acted like they've been doing this before. Nothing flowed or made any comic sense. My fiance and I were looking for some last minute entertainment on Saturday night and found FCI on Yelp with a great 2for1 deal. The place is small and cozy. The drinks are great and the bartender was very nice. The acts were hilarious. I especially loved Minor Suspension. That group fantastic and I laughed the entire time. Stand Up Sex was also great. After reading some of these amazing reviews that exclaim "improv changed my life", you might think an improv theater is a front for a creepy cult. And if you walked by the classroom window and saw 12 adults crawling on carpet and flailing their arms, you might be very convinced that FCI really stands for Favorite Cult Imaginable. But here's the secret: people in cults are having the greatest time. I think. And improv is very similar, except society is invited to watch and participate in this quirky, courageous performance art and it's almost impossible to not get enveloped in the excitement. As a current student, I can say with only a touch of bias that it is the community that makes this such an amazing and addicting experience. Everyone from teachers to house performers to your peers contribute to this metaphorical net, providing you a safe foundation from which to leap. When the time comes, they also jump with you out of the plane, because improv is about both safety and risk. Thursday-Sunday, FCI welcomes you with open arms and alcoholic "kool aid", provides 3 hours of entertainment for the price of a kale bundle from Whole Foods, and inspires the hell out of you. So what are you waiting for, you "Who's Line Is It, Anyway?" binge watching, Amy Poehler loving individual? Watch some shows, confirm FCI isn't actually a cult, and come get weird with us. read more

After attending 6 nights over the past 1 1/2 years, it's time I said something about this place. After my first visit, I would have given this place 5 stars. The location is great. The theatre is fairly small and intimate and probably seats 50 to 60. It's a nice place. I was invited to my first show in 2014 and it was a packed house (I think they oversold tickets because people were still trying to find a place to sit. But everyone was dying of laughter during the hour long show - some Who's Line is it Anyway games and a half hour scene. What happened? After my 3rd or 4th visit, the shows became very awkward in a way the performers were trying very hard to be funny, that or concentrating too hard on what they learn in the classes there. I think some of these performers are fresh out of the classes and maybe are not at the level of an experienced performer. But that's what people want to see, experienced performers/comedians making the audience laugh. We don't want to pay to see someone 'practicing' their craft on stage. There are also times when I would attempt to have small talk with performers after shows. Keith, Cat and Valerie were nice enough to spend at least a minute or two to listen to some questions and compliments I had. Other performers acted as if I was some bum that walked in looking for money. And what else is wrong? In the lobby, I heard performers bad mouthing other performers. Really? I thought these actors always supported each other, especially in the same theatre. I still remember good performances like Swim Team, but other greats like Stage Monkeys and The Hinges now no longer exist. But I even heard from someone in the lobby you can see even better performers at Side Stage Theatre. I don't know if she was a performer, but that doesn't sound good when I'm hearing this. But I like Finest City. It's a cozy, warm atmosphere (minus the talking behind the backs). They just need to book good performers and make people laugh again. Do something shocking. Do something different from other groups. They all seem to just do the same thing. Do something controversial, but in good taste. Make me laugh again. 5 stars for making the drinks strong!!! read more

I'll start by saying I've seen a lot of improv shows on the east coast and the other improv venues in San Diego. Overall it is the least professional and skilled. Not to say that you will have a bad time, but they use profanity to the point where it's a bit excessive, and ignore the suggestions or work use them in an abstract nod to the word rather than base the scene on it. On the plus side the people there are super friendly! I love the atmosphere, the skill level however, is lower than what I'm used to. read more
