The theatre is small and tucked away near a British pub. Parking is rough on the busy streets but we found a spot in the residential area nearby. We arrived close to the start of the show, so there was not a long wait to check in. The process was quick and they sell reasonably priced popcorn and drinks in the entryway. They do open seating in the very small, intimate theater. The show started promptly and the energy was so fun. The host was high energy and both teams gave it their all. Essentially, the two teams compete against each other with the voting being done by audience cheers. I'm glad to say that the team I was rooting for won! Throughout the show, they would often invite audience participation but they do not force it on anyone, and it is all very good natured. Time flew by and there was a 15 min intermission in the middle. The bathroom is outside the theater and there were staff member standing by to direct lost patrons. At the end of the show, the cast members stood by the exit to chat, and accept congratulations and high-fives as we left. I had a great first live comedy experience at the National Comedy Theatre, and I would love to attend more of their shows in the future!

This organization is amazing for three reasons:…read more 1) They make being a literary nerd cool. Yeah, I said it. They PACK a bar on a Thursday night for professional storytelling (think "This American Life" but live). 2) It provide creative writing opportunities to populations without access (like the Braille Institute, the teen center at Father's Joe's Village and veterans). Giving back. Awesome. 3) But one of my favorite things about SSWA is that they actively work to keep writers and artists in San Diego by supporting them and securing artistic development opportunities which keeps culture IN San Diego. That means that artists will continue on in San Diego instead of going to LA or NYC. YES! No culture drain! So go out to one of their events, or if you're a writer or a storyteller or a comedian, go to their Greenrooms and find other writers. I've been writing in their Greenrooms for more than a year and my writing has improved and I've met some fantastic people.

The historic Balboa Theatre in the Gaslamp district on 4th is a landmark to the city of San Diego…read more The Balboa first opened in 1924 and then closed in 1986. It remained closed until 2008 where it was restored and now it full of performances from comedy shows, plays and music. On this first time visit I came here to see Bobby Lee's stand up performance. Our seats were in the balcony level way above. At this level it is a little diffcult to see the stage as you have to angle your head down wards to see the stage. Viewable but its very far. The seats are very tiny and it difficult to walk across as every inch is used up in the theatre. Acoustic were great and the overall detail and restoration is amazing to look at. Great theatre venue overall but would recommend not sitting in balcony.

There are little sections separated by railings, which add a little separation. We paid for the VIP up top (not the four-top tables). We could choose to sit on a counter/bar stool with a thin-line bar top. But, it was farther back and you looked down at the people in front of you. So we moved to the right side in a standing section. The best! On the rail. Had a table to set drinks on. Private bathroom for upper level guests. Way worth it. One thing I wish they did was sell the 4-tops in twos. They are great. It, it's not always easy getting four people together for a show. Oh. Parking is a breeze. Structure across the way validates for concerts.

I went to the Heated Rivalry Rave and I can say that was such a fun event…read more Purchasing tickets online was really easy and getting in was fast and efficient, I felt like everyone was working together to make it safe and easy. The venue itself is really huge, I've been for a couple podcast tours but it was always seated so getting to come where there was open floor was fun. Lots of space for dancing and letting our little hearts live in the music. Would totally come back or another event here!

Is still well preserved & maintained. There's limited food/snack options and the drinks are a little pricey, but in all fairness, the prices are on par with other Theaters. If you have balcony seating, there are no elevators so you will have to take the stairs..which are quite numerous ....important to know if you have walking limitations.

I was appalled a couple of nights ago at an event at the Civic. Why on Earth are people allowed to…read morebring food into the theater? We sat there for 2 hours with two women next to us eating chips that were sold to them inside the waiting area. I would say there were a good 10 people pretty pissed off trying to listen to things while they're listening to kettle chip bags being opened and closed and opened and closed and potato chips being chomped on. Was pretty terrible. As always with the Civic, the getting out of the theater is always terrible to try to get to the parking lot the elevators always packed and then you figure out the people are going up a flight of stairs and getting on to the elevator up above so you have no chance from being in ground level and getting on to them and then you get into the parking structure and finding your car and waiting to get out but just the initial getting out of the theater and having to walk up all the stairs to your parking level then the smell of urine throughout the stairwell is always lovely. I'm a native San Diegan and have been coming to the theater as long as I can remember and they need to have a new theater somewhere away from downtown to have events the downtown experience is terrible the homeless situation is terrible the urine situation is terrible it's time to move the Civic. And also don't allow people to bring food into the theater it's not a movie.

I've been here before but oh boy I guess it's been a while. Went to see "Colossal" and wow, what…read morea great movie going experience. Apparently there's been a big renovation I wasn't aware of which included amazing new reclining seats (which didn't require being assigned which is usually annoying in my opinion.) they also have a great mix of healthy and high-end treats at the concession stand for pretty much the same price as any other theater charges for crappy low-end candies and snacks. Also enjoyed the amusing guy who introduced the movie, A popular new trend that I think Arclight started. Anyway, if you haven't been here in a while I recommend you come back and support this awesome Landmark theater. We don't want to lose a place like this is not the same as all the other typical AMCs etc. out there.
