What a fun time!!…read more Coming from someone who rides horses daily, this was a wonderful experience! I took my friends here for a bachelorette weekend ride and it was perfect! One of them had never been on a horse before and Luke was so kind and willing to make her feel the most comfortable when riding! He explained to her how to safely ride and have a comfortable ride, at that. Not only was it fun learning about the Julian mines along the tour, the horses were very happy! I avoid doing these kind of things because typically the horses are ridden so often that they just become robots and you can tell they're unhappy. That was NOT the case with these ones. They get well-rested and have a lovely space in the shade to relax when they're not on trail. Each of our horses were also very well trained and rideable for even the most inexperienced person. All very sweet temperaments and happy to get their apple slices at the end. Overall, the ride was wonderful, our guide was so respectful and informative and we had a wonderful day riding through the countryside of Julian!

After a lot of research I picked Integrity Stables and I'm so glad I did! Horses are well loved and cared for, the ride was very private (just us and our guide), the scenes were beautiful, and our trail guide (I'm blanking on his name he was young--maybe it was Luke?) was super knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Would recommend to anyone (experienced horse person or not) and definitely plan on going back next time I'm in San Diego! While it is a little drive from San Diego (45 min - 1hr), the little town of Julian was the perfect place for us to stop afterwards for lunch before we made the drive back!

An outstanding "under the radar" waterfall hike is right here in Descanso. The Merigan Trail (aka…read morethe Merigan Fire Road) is closer than you think at just five minutes off the 8 freeway. Once at the trailhead, you will start your hike through an open meadow, passing some shady oak groves then finishing with waterfalls crashing on large boulders. I was introduced to this gem when I was at sixth grade camp, at Camp Oliver. I knew the Merigan Trail was great even then, but now I can truly appreciate how this area was left untouched after all these years. If it is your first time here, you will be back. FYI..there was still snow on the ground when we went in early January. There is no official address, but the place is right off Viejas Boulevard at Mitzpah Lane. Since it is part of the Cuyamaca State Park, they have their own signs, dirt parking lot, port-a-potties and the "honor system" check in station. I guess they ask for an 8 dollar fee to park. From the parking lot, walk to the trail head going left that passes right in front of a ranger's cabin. You can't miss the trail, since it is wide enough to drive a truck through. Stay on the trail and you will pass through a meadow, then an oak grove, this will then turn into a few mild inclines on the trail that will eventually lead you to a fork in the trail. At the fork, you will see a sign with the option to go to the "Dead Horse Trail" or stay on the "Merigan Fire Road." I always take the Dead Horse Trail, and go left at the fork in the trail to get to the waterfalls. The hike to the waterfall takes about 30-40 minutes for the average hiker with a few stops to admire the scenery. On a scale of 1-10 for difficulty, I would rate it at a 3. There are some inclines, but nothing too bad. Remember, my entire 6th grade class made the hike. Although I love Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain as much as the next hiker...those spots are flooded with way too many bodies. Just when you think you hear a coyote or deer up ahead, it always ends up being another hiker. Kind of a buzz kill. The Merigan Trail has always been the opposite of that experience for me.

It's pretty much just as the above review describes. Drive east on I-8 two exits past the Viejas outlets to Japatul rd and make a left. Make a left at hwy 79 and then an immediate left on Viejas Blvd. Look for Mitzpah rd and park in the dirt lot. Parking is $8. The hike to the waterfall is about 30 minutes. Take the fireroad and make a left at the fork down towards Dead Horse Trail. You will start to hear water. The falls aren't big and majestic, but it's quiet and uncrowded. We had 4 kids with us ranging from age 6 - 9 and they all had a good time.

The trail area was once used for navy training and a dump site; now for recreational use. The preserve/wetlands are patrolled and have cameras that are throughout the trails. Communities tucked in Tijuana canyons and US canyons. I'm not your average rider as I love cute mocktails on the beach and sewing in my spare time. Abort mission? By no means. Pony land is a family owned ranch that is also an interactive petting zoo. My tour guide was Rozka and while she was rather quite lovely, however, Lilly stole the show. A calm and gentle gal--yet a playful, curious, and sweet mare. She was not easily spooked by things or noises on the trail. No leaf eating for the horses during the journey, it is bad form. Horses have way more character than I would have thought! I have learned they can push your boundaries or engage in lighthearted mischief while sticking to their training. They do have porta potties on the grounds and customer service was wonderful. They also provide complimentary sunblock and mosquito spray--sprayed bug spray on horses for their protection as well. I enjoyed myself throughly and would definitely do it again. The wind in my hair and the views were breath stopping! Riding along the beach was wondrous and or romantic even--a truly magical experience. Until further notice, continuing to romanticize life. "No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle!" My wife, our four horses, and I have been clients of Len Judd for 6 years now, and we have followed him to the Horse of the Sun Ranch and Distinction Training. We make a 3 hour round trip drive to have Len help us with starting our new colts. We have watched the physical improvements to the facility under it's new ownership and it has come a long way with more to come. We have visited a number of times now, including a couple of 3-4 day stays on the property. We see a nothing less than quality care for the horses in residence. Len and Bethani are particularly keen on the quality of their feed even to the extent of concern for what our horses are fed back at home. These folks have nothing less than the greatest concern for the animals in their care. I've watched a small crew feed, water and muck all the pens on my every visit there. Horse of the Sun is now a training facility with training now exclusively from Len and Bethani, and not a general boarding facility. Len delivers such a depth of knowledge and new skills that we often find ourselves able to go months before we bring him our next challenge. Bethani has a great eye for what goes on with the rider and the horse and her observations have also been very helpful. We feel fortunate to have Len's experience with our first starting of young horses.
