But…read morewhen overall wear-and-tear began to creep in, I decided to join this neighborhood gym to delay the ravages of time. Since the last time I did weight machines was in the Jack LaLanne/ Bally Total Fitness era, I decided to hire a trainer to give me a kind of orientation and help me launch a fitness routine. Liam came highly recommended. He customizes our sessions to reach my goals, and modifies them as my goals change. Liam knows my medical conditions, which he works with, and weak areas, which he helps me to strengthen. He suggests exercises I feel comfortable doing on my own in the gym, or at home. Liam can point out details of how a position or motion should feel, so I know when I'm doing it correctly. I have the attention span of a flea, yet he designs routines that are challenging and entertaining. He checks in often during a session, yet he can somehow inspire one or two more reps out of me than I believe possible. Befitnyc has a variety of classes which I've just begun to check out, from barre-pilates and tai chi to cross- and interval-training to zumba, all included in the very reasonable cost of membership. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the facilities are clean and well designed for a relatively small space. Best of all, the laid-back, diverse clientele makes me feel like I belong.

Classes are without barbells, abmats, ropes, rings, and for the most part, boxes for box-jumps. There are pullup bars and barbells. 2. The workout is 30 mins, not a full 55 mins or 60 mins. This means, basically, that there is no warmup, and no strengthening phase. If you are part of the over-40 set, this might be a deal-breaker, since it spells pain the next day and cumulative pain if you have joint issues. There are good points: - Coaches pay attention and will help you get it right. Kudos to coaches. - Workouts (which are mostly body-weight workouts) have a good flow, and are just fine, if you don't care about the warmup or building strength on a bar. - Nice group spirit among participants. There are bad points: - Gym is quite dirty. The ritual of spraying windex where you sweated is a little absurd; somebody needs to come in and mop the chunks of dirt up -- at the end of the day, at the very least. - No locker room; you had better live nearby. - Gym is cramped, dark, with a low ceiling. Saturday morning classes are packed too tight. - No a/c in the warm weather -- maybe not even fans, sometimes. In sum, I found that the gym wasn't delivering enought for $199/mo. Really not a good deal; I might have stayed for $150 or $100. Too much pain per gain.

This place was such an exciting discovery that it got me inspired to start Yelping again, after 4…read moreyears! I moved into my boyfriend's house in the S. Bronx this past January and am slowly getting familiarized with the area. Being a b-girl and all, it was inevitable that I would end up in here at some point, right? =] For anyone who knows me, I've been a dedicated Brooklyn-head and Harlemite during my time in NYC. Yes, I've also been known to sneer at the hardcore gentrification of both of my old 'hoods, but I definitely got used to the wine shops/health food stores/restaurants that come with all that. Due to the 2008 market crash, the "SoBro" tag has yet to fully realize itself, but there are a few signs that it's encroaching. One could say that South Bronx Yoga is a sign of the times, but it's not a snotty, overpriced yoga studio that caters solely to the local gentrifiers. The teacher/yogi Amy Moran has been running SBY for about 8 months out the beautiful 810 Studio, a mere 3 blocks away from and in the shadow of the most overpriced thing in NYC: Yankee Stadium. Classes are $10 (or $3/sliding scale) for an hour long class that begins with some centering, chanting, poses, inversion, rest and end chanting, making it both affordable and accessible to all. It was not too packed, and people varied in levels from beginner, to people who had taken 5-10 classes previously, to me (dancer and former yogi-wannabe). Though home-grown, SBY provides a limited number of yoga mats, as well as support blocks, straps, blankets, and tissues. Classes are only a couple of times a week and clearly listed at www.southbronxyoga.com. Definitely go to the website and reserve a spot in class if you plan to go. I have to say that I've taken a LOT of yoga classes all over the country, ranging from the real stuff to the craptastic-$20-run-through-poses-scary-fast-just-so-you-sweat-but-the-teacher-don't-know-shit classes. I went in with an open mind, and Amy's guidance got me centered in a way that I have missed over the past few years of not practicing. I can do all this stuff by myself, but it's definitely better to practice with this humble sangha. Anyone in the neighborhood can benefit from Amy's dedication to her yoga practice that inspired her to start SBY. Overall, it's a great place for a beginner or an advanced practitioner who would just like some guidance from a well-centered yogi and to practice with others. And it rocks that if you live in the BX that you can walk here!

And just a good person overall. It's easy to feel safe with her, and she knows how to make workouts fun and challenging at the same time. She doesn't do it through dumb gimmicks. She does it through being authentic, and that is a priceless experience. I wish more gyms like this existed. Where women can go just for them, to build skill, to be in community. Most women's gyms seem to be focused on losing weight or for appearances, or they're run by owners with a tendency towards shitty policies that screw over the consumer or treat them like just a number. This is not that. This is priceless. Please continue to flourish. And please find your way to creating a second branch in LA lol. Thank you.

Assume you can scan in via App or Apple Wallet/Watch **Note: I am a Blink user with entry possibility of all their NYC area gyms via an Add-on to my Classpass membership. (I did not want to deal with Blink corporate in case I needed to cancel and wanted to avoid a startup fee or annual charge). I do not take showers at the gym and tend to go off-peak hours.

I paid for 2 semesters access, but probably only went a handful a times -- needless to say, I seriously wasted my money. After doing some research for other gyms in the surrounding area, this gym started to look better -- price, location, amenities, and options-wise. I, once again, paid for access for 2 semesters but this time went quite often. I've come to understand that this gym takes some getting used to. The top one being the issue of signing up for machines. I find that if I go during off-peak times, I can usually sign up for the machine I want with no issues at all. You just have to be open to options if you're going during the busier hours; i.e. running on the track instead of going on the treadmill, etc. They offer lots of classes as well, but I haven't gotten a chance to try them yet. I'm planning on trying to catch a Zumba class one of these days. The BF plays basketball a lot here, but that is definitely where this gym lacks order. There are sometimes groups of people that will hog the court and not be fair with allowing everyone the chance to play. It gets a bit "heated" and I feel like one day may break out into a huge fight; which could easily be prevented by just setting up a type of list that makes things fair for everything there ... like how they do the machines. Unsure why they haven't had anything set in place for that yet.
