This review is based on other similar style restaurants/bars. My expectations were low when we came here. St Helen's does not have a lot of options for lunch and my friend said he had good experiences before. My friend insisted that the portobello fries were good and we ordered the appetizer - and he was right! They were actually very good! The batter was light on them so I appreciated that as it did not make it too heavy. My hubby ordered just chili for lunch and he was surprised it had as much spicy kick to it as it did - and that was a huge plus for him. I ordered a salad with seared tuna - I forgot to get a picture of it but there was a decent amount of tuna. The salad itself was fresh and crisp with a good Asian dressing. read more

This is such a cool place to dine, so much to look at. Firefighter memorabilia, items from fire departments from all over the place, just a cool place. The food was fantastic. I had the smothered chicken and a cup of their signature pot pie soup that was absolutely awesome. My wife had the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and she said it was very very good. Our server did awesome and it was her first day. Watching the support from the other staff get her up to Speed was really nice to see. read more

My boyfriend and I like the firehouse for fun vibes and quick food if we don't want to drive far. We like to go Friday nights and listen to the karaoke The food isn't outstanding, but the burgers are yummy and the vibes are always a good time! Came in and it was not busy and our waitress was prompt till our food order went in. I had to take our glasses to the bar to get refilled. Had over hour wait for our food to arrive and a couple entrees never arrived. Ended up waiting over 2 hours and had to ask for chec, when I complained about how long everything took the waitress became snippy when I suggested a discount. She complained that a waitress quit mid shift and that they were very busy-"what did I expect?" Well, when we arrived 2 hours earlier It was NOT busy, it's not my responsibility to do your job and refill drinks or remind YOU what our table ordered. That's YOUR job! Used to be a great spot, but after Covid everything changed. Wait time is not the best, even when business isn't busy. Staff also isn't the best. Wouldn't suggest mixed drinks, as they aren't made correctly. Check food because sometimes meat is under cooked just by looking at it. Karaoke night is great when it isn't blaring across the entire bar to where you can't hear your friends or family speaking next to you while being on the total opposite side of the stage. Large flat panel Tv's so it's a great place to watch a game when your up north in the area! Highly recommend! Try it out when your headed up skiing! It is easy on easy off! went there on a Saturday early. about 530. it was a two hour experience. waitress had to come back several times to ask questions or tell us something was out. 15 minutes before we got our first drink. then another 15 minutes and I ordered a bottle of wine since I knew she wouldn't be back in forever. then they were out of the appetizer. comes back another 10 minutes later then they were out of top sirloin. then they were out of ribeye steaks. when the bill came the wine was more then stated on the menu. the rude manager said they charge more when they have live music. too bad as it looks like a nice place but now we know why it wasn't that busy at dinner time read more

Well first the good, the food was pretty good both of us in our group had steak, one rib wye and one sirloin. They were cooked wonderfully medium rare as requested, ribeye didn't have a lot of flavor but sirloin was seasoned well. Now the challenges, the wait 52 minutes for the two steaks to come is way to long, not all seats were full so they should be able to handle it. The other thing is the general atmosphere the facility is themed well and seems like a pretty neat atmosphere but it was ruined by everyone trying to shout across the tables from each other to have a conversation. They had a band not bad pretty good actually, but if amps volume only go to 10 these two guys had ones that went to 20, ruined because of sound way to loud for facility. Unfortunate as a sound engineer you could tell they were talented, but it was a rush around us to see which table was going t leave first. Unfortunate when they took a break someone from behind the wall shouted "thank you", which was only followed up by "aaaarg!!!" from another table when the bartenders turned on there music to fill also to loud. I can only assume most of the staff is deaf at this point because when the band came back from break he had to ask multiple times to have bartenders cut the loud filler music Too bad really they are apparently trying for a concert vibe but do not have a manager watching the crowd. Same with band "learn to read the crowd" if every table is shouting trying to carry on a conversation something isn't right, playing louder doesn't grab attention it pisses people off hence the exodus prior to break. It was interesting to watch and entertaining. Maybe we will try again another time a little earlier in the evening. . read more

The food was OMG amazing! Their Italian panini was the best panini I have ever tasted, and their pickle chips were heaven! I liked how there weren't too many so you didn't fill up on them before your food came. I ordered an Octoberfest and they asked me if I wanted it rimmed... I was skeptical, since I have never heard of such a thing, but it's rimmed with Carmel and cinnamon sugar. It was the best beer I have had! So different! I'm a little adventurous so why not?! Just ate here on Sunday, as we were visiting my sister-in-law who just bought a place in the area. Atmosphere: great, as many have shared it pays 'tribute' to firefighters with memorabilia throughout the place. My dad was a firefighter so it made me smile walking in. There was plenty of seating, so we found a table for 5 and sat down. It's not lit real well, so if you need good light to read sit near a window. Food: the food was fantastic!! We had gator for an appetizer and it was outstanding. I had the buffalo burger and it was cooked perfectly...and the sweet potato fries were wonderful. Service: the service was good...a little slow, especially at the end of our visit, but good. Cost: It is not cheap, but seriously i've had way more expensive meals and not been nearly as satisfied. I would absolutely go there again and would have no reservations about recommending it to family and friends. Try it out! read more

This place is a wonderful diversion to the madness, and humdrum fast food options that is the West Branch exit off of I-75. So glad we gave it a try. Extensive menu, and daily specials, offered something for everyone, without being overwhelming. Homemade soups are a plus! Bad food. Awful service. Very expensive for what you get. 2 adults and 1 six year old cost $53.00 to eat. My wife ordered ribs, which were very dry and tough. I ordered steak and shrimp, the steak was more fat than meat and the shrimp were not even peeled. My son ordered a cheeseburger, which turned out to be worse than what the school cafeteria would serve. They didn't even put cheese on it. Our waiter started out ok, but took over 10 minutes to refill my pop after taking the glass. He also through had an attitude when we asked for cheese on my son's cheeseburger. We quit going here for quite a while...slow service, bad food that would take forever....I'm not sure if they changed owners but we went in January against my wishes and our burgers were awesome and cooked perfect medium. Since then we've been back four more times and the service has been fantastic and the food is great! Had fish and chips Friday and it was fantastic! Clam chowder was great too! Stopped here on our way through for lunch. It's definitely a northern Michigan bar. Not super clean and definitely needs updating. Service was awful. The bartender was new, and did not know anything. She took forever for everything. We had to ask twice for menus. Finally ordered our food. We got, chili cheese fries, portabella mushroom fries, and a BLT pizza. We meant to order the amazing looking pretzel, but somehow we didn't get it. The food was really good. The chili on the fries was obviously home made, the mushroom fries and the dipping sauce were so good, and BLT pizza was great. I think it is poor management to put someone who does not know how to be a bartender behind the bar. There was another server working there, and she seemed very capable. There were only 2 tables for her to deal with as opposed to the full bar the new girl had. The experienced worker should have been behind the bar. If I'm ever in the area again I will stop because the food is good. We just had a horrible experience with service today. read more

Pizza and Paninis are amazing here! Such a great place to hang out, they have a pool table, claw machine, and a life-size Jenga set that is played in the center of the dance floor, which is a lot of fun. Saturday nights they have karaoke, other nights the DJ takes over. read more

Excellent food and service. Great beer selection and plenty of TV's with sports playing. One of the best places I have found yet to eat at in Northern Michigan. Their Thanksgiving dinner there hands down is the best. Worth the drive over from Houghton Lake to have lunch or dinner. read more

Great place tucked away just 2 miles off 75 in St Helen's. Just had drinks but fun friendly atmosphere and super friendly bartender. We will be back. Great stop if you are heading back to Houghton Lake after a day of outlet shopping! read more
