Haven't been mopped in years. The men's bathroom is very old, used and dirty feeling. But what about Brad? How does he feel about it? He loves Keno. Z18 has not got Keno. He wasn't happy. Well they refinished the floors. Nothing else has changed. We literally just had to walk out after sitting down and waiting 20 minutes only to have no one wait on us or even acknowledge us. We literally watched the waiter walk over to a party that had just walked in and still no service. Cant say much about the food considering we didn't even get a drink of water. read more

Wow!!! American Dive Bar for sure.. Has a sour smell to it. Wondering when the beer lines were cleaned last, the beer was warm and skunky. Never in my life have I been in a Bar where there are servers or bartenders sit around and crochet. The place needs to be closed snd deep cleaned by professionals. Also needs to have an exterminator come as there was Mouse Droppings on the Pool table. The Server had no clue as to the menu, didnt know the specials and treated us with unkind gestures, eye rolls and no professionalisim what so ever... We were intown scouting a venue for a Poker Run for Charity ride. It wount be Zone 18. Thats for sure. Pretty bad when a group of Bikers cant handle a bar.. That never happens. This is your standard "up north" tavern complete with no frills menus, staff and clientele. Fridays they have great seafood specials (all fried of course) but stay away from the smelt. Also, if you are so intoxicatedly inclined, they serve their long islands in 22 oz beer mugs filled to the top with booze; definitely not for the light weight. Great "dive" bar with good burgers and fries! That should be enough to make anyone want to go but I will elaborate a little. LOL! This bar is about 30 minutes from our cabin but we head here for a burger quit often. It's out of the Houghton Lake hoopla and kind of in an area on its own. That's a like for me! Walking in you can tell the bar has been here for a looong time. Old wood floors, old signs on the walls, shuffleboard table (beat up), etc. They are both MI and MSU fans and basically decorated half and half. You must check the bar itself out. It is one of the old bars where the bartenders have to walk down a few stairs to get behind the bar. Great concept since the bartender is eye level with the people sitting at the bar The last time we went to Zone 18 there were 10 of us and we sat at a high top table and ordered all kinds of drinks. Their Bloody Marys are good and they have a decent selection of beer and booze. Friends got big 22oz bears for cheap and a few of the ladies got the Long Islands that they really liked. I think we all ordered burgers all different kinds and all of us enjoyed them. They are a large bar burger! We did order some chili fries and cheese to help with the hangover from a long night. I was surprised that they were good. Not good like Detroit Coney Islands but good and I would order again. I really enjoyed this place. It's a little bit of a dive but in all the good ways. It's kind of dark on the inside which is surprising since it is a rather large place. I went for the Jalapeño Burger and it was really good. The Jalapeños had really good heat to them and the burger was cooked perfect. I'm not sure if it was because I was one of 5 people in the place at the time or what but my food came out so fast. The service is also extremely friendly plus there is a pool table and shuffleboard there. I think I found a new spot up north. read more

I used to work there and deb is the worst manager I've ever had. She always tried to say EMPTY bottles were coming up missing and would dock our pay. FOR .10 cents? When no one stole her damn cans. One busy weekend, I had a $100 walk out. She said she was taking it out of my paycheck so I tracked down the guys and called the police and got the money back, she told me we don't call cops and we lost a customer?!!? And almost fired me. We arrived and had our server request our drinks. When we asked what they had, our server stumbled on what was available. We then just asked for bottled basics (Corona, Miller Lite and Bud Light). We put our food order in and after 40 minutes (with no food update), with only one check-in by our server, we were done. We had our two children with us and enough was enough so we (over) paid for the drinks, told her the issue, and walked out with no resolution. Stopped in shortly after noon for a quick drink and to check out the place on our way up to TC from Houghton Lake, and were treated nicely by the staff. This looks like a great sports bar, but there were no games on the several well-positioned TVs. Menu is standard bar fare, but we didn't eat anything. Restrooms were clean, and pool, bowling, and other games were well placed around the bar, with plenty of tables and nooks to settle into. I'd like to come back during football season or to watch the MLB playoffs, as the atmosphere is inviting and conducive to a good time. $2 drafts on Fridays are another nice touch, so look for us some Friday afternoon in October! read more

This place is exactly what it looks like: An old townie bar during the day/off-season with outstanding half-pound burgers. Nice people. Juicy, flavorful burger with a bunch of topping options and the standard condiments brought separately so you can add as many pickles as you want. My 10 year old son is a "burger expert" and he ranks this burger in his Michigan Top 5 (which is amazing for a little dive bar outside Houghton Lake!). If you're drinking on the cheap, order a $1.25 pint of their "house" beer. It's really Natural Light but, if you're here, you have no problem drinking Natty Lite. Sit at the bar for the best food and drink service. Now, despite the outstanding burgers, the hubs and I won't go there on Friday or Saturday nights during tourist/hunting season. We've seen patrons arguing with waitresses, bartenders ignoring drunken patrons and people just overall ready to cause trouble. No thanks. My Husband and I have been in the Zone 18 a few times their Taco's are delicious, and Sandy is wonderful, friendly and very efficient. We raved about the burgers and the Fish. However, we stopped in the other Friday after a long drive up there. We sat at the bar for a while but they were busy so didn't think anything was amiss. Finally after a good few minutes we were served by the owner. We ordered the fish dinner and a couple of drinks. We were not asked by her if we were ok or if we wanted another drink again yet, oddly enough, the people sitting next too us were asked multiple times. I tried to get her attention as she was serving them but, nothing. We watched as she took orders from others coming in after us. They were busy so we were patient. Then i was watching the people that ordered after us get beautifully served dinners!!! we had been waiting pretty close to an hour!! Finally getting her attention i asked " just wondering if maybe our fish order got missed" I was told NO it is coming right now. We waiting a few more mins before our food was finally slapped down in front of us.................and we were warned more fries were coming. The dinner looked like crap, we got 7 maybe eight fries that were all crispy looking like the fryer scraps.... the fish was dried up and very pale like it was not actually cooked. Before i could say anything she was getting our silverware, when she came back i asked for the bill as were not eating this...... I said I would pay for the fish though. She left and came back with boxes, at this point my husband was out. I told her i didn't want the fish but would pay. She proceeded to ask what was wrong i pointed out we had waiting an hour and look at it, not very appetizing is it? I again said I would pay she proceeded to wave the boxes in the air screaming she didn't want my money, like we had done something wrong. Wouldn't have been even so bad if we had got a "sorry it took so long" or even an "opps we lost your order" nothing. Bottom line... if your not a local lower your expectations of getting treated nicely or served timely. Actually this bar is called zone 18 bar and grill not zone 17. It is located on m18 so the name is reflective of the location. Aside from that, this bar is an awesome, dive type bar that anyone who appreciates dive bars would love. Its a family atmosphere in the sense of the show Cheers where everyone knows your name and regular customers are plentiful. Drink specials are amazing allowing anyone on a recession proof budget to atill have a great time. They boast and stand by having the best burgers in town and i can say the southwest and mushroom swiss burgers are amazing as well a their fish n chips on fridays (their dry batter is my fav). I never go to houghton lake without stopping here. You wont like it if youre looking for applebees or tgifridays (chain bars with no uniqueness whatsoever). read more

Probably the worse burger in town is what we got served tonight. We ordered medium and mine was well done. My wife's was totally burnt. Last time we were there we got a nice serving of fries, not this time. Could have counted them on my fingers. Just happened to think of this also, we were suppose to get slaw with our burger basket. This bar is now called Zone 17. This place is kind of on the boring side if you are looking to be entertained. They no longer have a DJ or karaoke which makes it pretty blah if you are going there to hang out for the night. The drinks are pretty good though. I use to go here quite often but the boring factor is to overwhelming now. read more

My Houghton Lake favorite. Defintiely don't expect any frills. As previously mentioned, it's a dive in all of the good ways. Menu is simple, and food was surprisingly good. We went for lunch and our server was very attentive. You can't beat the drink prices. And I expect people take advantage of that later on in the evening and it become a bit more rowdy.
