First time trying this place out - I'm a fan of sandwiches and regularly eat at Subway or Jersey Mike's in the USA so had a certain basis to compare it to. Firehouse is really a step above! I love the theme of the place, the easy menu ordering options and variety. There's plenty of parking, tables for seating and love how the staff greets you as you walk in. Firehouse has sandwiche names you can order straight off the menu so this takes any guess work in terms of figuring out how you want to customize it, however you can also build your own with any ingredients available. I tried the meatball sub and the classic italian on white bread. We opted for the large size and it was plenty if you are very hungry. Everything tasted super fresh and just perfect - honestly the most impressive thing for me was the bread. It it moist and light, definitely better than Subway or any other chain I've tried before. This location has a cool Coke Freestyle soda machine so you can choose from huge selection of drink options, many of them zero sugar as well. Very fun! So I love this location of firehouse subs. The food is always fresh and tasty and the service is great. I got the half and half, I got the engineer and brocolli soup. There was a great meat, to veggie to bread ratio. If you like subs, and want something better quality than subway, give these guys a shot. I hit 'maybe' for recommendation by accident, but it's not a clear cut no question I'd say go type of business. It's in a strip mall and the organization of the lot is not great, but I can see they're going for small pockets so you don't get too many cars whizzing by you when you are getting out of your car. The subs are good. I was asked if I wanted mushrooms and I said yes, but they're pretty sparse. One thing I'd say about the place is it is pricey. I did a combo large Steak and Cheese and it was $25. I got Vitamin Water so there's extra there, but that's a lot of cheddar for a submarine sandwich, a drink and a cookie. Service was a bit slow but friendly. Seriously.....seriously...seriously....I have not had a sub as good as the one I just ate EVER! Popped in here tonight (Friday), and it was pretty busy. Ordered the footlong veggie on white bread with extra pickles and jalapenos and I think I went to heaven when I took my first bite. From the bread to the toppings and sauce, it was delish! I like how you can add on additional toppings when ordering at the cash like pickles or jalapenos. P.S....They actually use real chopped deli pickles on their subs...bonus points for them! The layout is kind of like five guys...you order...then wait...and your name is called when your sub is ready. I also like how they welcome each guest to the store by yelling out "welcome to firehouse subs!". Not too sure how long that will last, but its a nice gesture. Also tried the fresh baked chocolate chip cookie and it was scrumptious! Only comment would be to get better take out containers for the sauces, Hard to get the lid off once its on without it splattering everywhere. Speaking of sauces, they have A LOT of hot sauces as well as their specialty firehouse bbq sauce...SOOO GOOD! Stopped in for a quick lunch and have to say overall I was a bit disappointed. Downsides: Wait - It took 15 minutes from the time I ordered to when I got my sub. This was with not too many people in the restaurant. If you are in a rush, I'd suggest getting their early. Cost - At $9 for a medium size sub with very little toppings, I found it pricey for what you get. That's the price they should charge for a large, not a medium Pluses: Taste - While there wasn't much on my sub, it tasted pretty good. All in all though I don't see much reason to go here over another place. - I have visited this Firehouse location 3x now (still the sole location in Ottawa), and I have tasted their Meatball, Steak & Cheese and Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket - Upon entry, you will be greeted with "Welcome to Firehouse" by the staff - however, this has been somewhat muffled during my visits so far (likely due to the ambient sound, and the staff do not always harmoniously greet). Despite this, it still adds a uniquely refreshing customer experience that none of their direct competitors (Subway, Quiznos) offer. - There is a thematic firefighter atmosphere throughout the restaurant (decked in firefighter equipment, gear and memorabilia, which all has been donated). The murals on the wall are also very appealing. - So you almost want to dine-in rather than take-out (both are offered obviously). If you dine-in, they plate the subs in food baskets, which adds a certain aesthetic appeal over just the standardized wrapping. For take-out, they package the subs in cartons, which I find protects the sub from accidental squashing (my Subway sandwiches have definitely been squashed in the past, as I normally stow food in my backpack when I am on the move)   - Firehouse is also a charitable company that serves the local community. In fact, during one of my visits (shown in one of my uploaded pics), they were offering a complimentary medium sub for bringing in an unopened 24-pack of bottled water. The water was going to the local fire and police departments for distribution to those in need. - One minor gripe about Firehouse was probably the line queuing: I have ordered during the peak and off-peak times. Firehouse does not employ the same order-pay line configuration as Subway/Quiznos. - So the first line at Firehouse is to order/pay, which was always acceptably small. - However, the counter to await your food was about 5 people deep during all my visits. There is no TV monitor to indicate order numbers or progression (as like McDonalds). So there has been some confusion with sequentially fulfilling orders or customer names associated with the an order.   - Circling back to their competitors though, I do not believe that Subway/Quiznos can really hold a candle to Firehouse. Yes, Subway boasts their low calorie menu, and Firehouse conversely promotes to satiate your appetite (it is actually stated on their packaging "we cater to firefighter-sized appetites"). - In fact, here is a brief comparison: 1. These subs are so good. Some reviews quote high prices, but let's be real, the only previously somewhat comparable place for subs was Quiznos and those prices were high too. The service is great, the taste of the subs is amazing. I've been going back regularly, and the food is consistently hot and delicious. My favourite sub so far is the Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket. It's got a great barbecue flavour and the meat is great. I find it interesting how they steam the meat on the subs, this way the meat stays juicy and tender. Great concept. read more

Firehouse Subs, is a fresh alternative to the big name sub and sandwich restaurants. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by friendly staff and a clean open environment. Although I would argue the price is a little on the steeper side, in relation to their biggest competition, I was extremely pleased with the quality and quantity of the brisket in my sandwich. I got a medium and even though I was content with my meal, I'll definitely stick to a large sub moving forward. It's a really really good sub. But it's still just a sub. The brisket on the smokehouse is some of the best I've ever had. It's seasoned well and melts in your mouth with a great smokey flavour. The bread regardless of what sub you get is always fresh and good quality in my experience. I've had a couple others, hook and ladder half and half and the pastrami Reuben. Once I had tried a few others I realized nothing competes with the smokehouse really. I mean it's a meat and cheese only sub...come on. Staff is always friendly and restaurant is clean. They have a giant assortment of hot sauces for you to use if your into that sort of thing. I know you pay for what you get. Complimented by the simple and standard fully involved topping selection (Mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions and deli mustard) that offers a refreshing crunch. American-style submarine sandwiches ('subs') with mediocre quality (for the price), especially since they downgraded their menu to only have basic toppings (i.e lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, onions) available. You can find the same basic subs at any pizza place in Ottawa half the price. None of the specialty sub combinations look appetizing (too many different meats in one place) and you can't add BBQ sauce or bacon to the regular subs, which only come with the basic toppings. Unless you want to strip down an expensive specialty sub yet pay the same price, there's not much to the place except cost and meat. They barely put any lettuce on my sandwich even when I asked for extra, and the toppings on the sandwich are sliced so thin you can barely taste them, including the cheese. I'm still not sure IF there was any cheese in my sandwich. The combos come only with bottles of Coke or water, despite having a larger selection of (smaller) canned drinks. If you're looking for a good submarine experience, this is not the place. If you want an expensive sandwich, you'll easily keep them in business! read more

Had the steak & cheese sub; it was good, but wow - the price. Over $11 after tax for a six-inch sub, no drink or chips. And $4 more for a large. I hate to think what a combo is. If it was a large sub for that price, I wouldn't mind, but spending near $20 (after tax) for a fast food meal is too pricey for me. Sadly, I won't go back. read more

I stopped by on my way home from work on a Friday night. It was relatively busy when I placed my order. I got the cheddar BBQ brisket sub. I went with the large sizer and donated some money to the local firehouse rounding the bill out to $15. While the sub was pretty tasty I did find the price a little too high. The brisket wasn't as thick cut as I was expecting however the sauce and whole sandwich in general was pretty good. Unfortunately, for $15 I feel there should be more. I don't think I can justify going back at that price point. read more
