TROUBLE! Had an account here for 23+ years. Transferred a large amount from a money market acct., at the bank, to our checking account. Wrote a check against that account and still kept a few thousand in the acct. They LOCKED the acct. without notifying us. Turns out a paperwork shuffler screwed up. Branch manager lied about what happened. Another occasion I deposited a large check in our saving acct. Despite the fact that I had a few thousand in my checking acct. they locked the savings acct. AND the checking acct. We have NEVER had ONE check bounce, except for when this bank has screwed up. If you can afford not having access to your money, the bank might be good. read more

I have been a customer here for over 20 years, I signed all of my children up for savings accounts when they were young. Me and my family have never had any complaints with this company until just recently. I personally love to receive paper monthly statements, and I get my paper monthly statements for free if I maintain a "large" account balance. If you don't meet the minimum account balance they charge you $5 per month (or $5 per statement since they send statements to me monthly. They're making a large profit on this because the cost of paper, handling and postage shouldn't cost more than $1 per statement). Anyway, I am an engineer so I make a decent income. My balance is almost always above this minimum account balance to receive free statements. When I occassionally don't have enough money in my account to qualify for the "free" statement, I am more than willing to pay the fee since I really like my paper statements. However, if I am billed for a paper statement, I expect to receive a paper statement. There have been several months where FAB has forgotten to mail me my statements, despite charging me $5 for the statement. I have called FAB numerous times only to have some low-paid teenager apologize for the company's mistakes. I personally am getting frustrated with their inability to send me monthly statements, even after I am charged for it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recently, FAB raised the minimum balance on the savings account from $100 to $250 without notifying anybody in my family. The penalty for having an account balance below the minimum threshold is $5/month. My son is in law-school, and he has two accounts: a checking account and a savings account. He receives quarterly statements from FAB on interest/account activity. In his checking account he has over $15k, and in his savings he has approximately $200, which is plenty above the prior minimum balance requirement. Even though my son has more than enough money in his checking account to meet the savings account minimum balance requirements, he was charged 2 months worth of penalties because his saving's account did not meet the newly imposed minimum balance. If he would have been notified about the new balance requirements, my son would have transferred money from his checking account into his saving's account. FAB said they would not reimburse him the penalty fees despite my son having thousands of dollars over the minimum balance requirement in his checking account. My son is withdrawing his $15k+ from this bank over a very silly $10 fee. This just shows how short-sighted this bank's management is. The bank charges 5% on a mortgage; presuming FAB used my son's $15k as a loan on a mortgage, this bank would make $750 in interest off my son's deposits despite paying him 0.03%, or $4.50. FAB is going to lose a lot of money in the future by losing this future high-income lawyer. My son has advised the rest of our family to find new banks. I do not want to leave FAB for sentimental purposes, but the management at this bank has lost the customer focus that originally brought me and my family in as customers. I am currently looking at credit unions that pay much higher interest rates, and are more reliable at sending paper monthly account statements. read more

Terrible customer service! I was a customer with First American for many years and didn't realize how bad they really were until I started looking at other banks. I've used several branches and this one was the worst. Your time and money will be best elsewhere....stay away from First American Bank! read more

Had an account at First American Bank for many years. First they take my cushion away in my checking account that I had paid yearly for providing a very lame excuse. They don't notify you if you get low in your account like Chase does, they send you an email or text message, FAB just dings you with service charges. They shut off your debit card whenever they feel like it, and the newest zinger is service charges. For the first time since I opened the account in 2004 they charged me a service charge of $10. I sent an e-mail asking why, they never replied. I'm a single mother on a very limited income and this kind of stuff has made me close my account. Their customer service is bad, and they charge you for everything...Good bye FAB. read more

This bank has been great for me! I was really surprised to even see a bad comment on here. I was Google-ing the banks phone number, and this popped up so I had to write a rebuttal for the bank. I have 3 seperate business accounts, as well as a personal account at this bank, and they have been great! I have used Amcore and Bank of America in the past, and neither one can even hold a candle to the people at First American. They now know all my businesses and what I do, and I have a great personal relationship with everyone in the bank. I even found out one of the personal bankers lives just a few houses away from me. When I do have problems with my account(s), they are always happy to help, and quickly correct any problems that I may have. read more
