What a relief it was to find First Call Garage Doors. I usually use Yelp to find local companies to use for services. We had used another company prior to finding First Call Garage Doors and after a bad experience with a different company I figured it was time to try someone new. I request a quote from three different garage door companies on Yelp. All prices from all (3) were roughly about the same which was a good indicator that the price was fair. I then like to look through the reviews and see what others are saying. In this case, I am also considering a new garage door for an improved aethestic in the future and I really liked the look of the ones First Call was installing. Sandra replied to me almost instantly with the quote which was nice that she was so responsive. When I decided to move forward, I called them late Sunday afternoon expecting to leave a message, but to my surprise Michael answered my call and scheduled an appointment for me the next morning between 9 and 10. Michael showed up promptly at 9am which was no small feat considering it was pouring rain outside. We went over the work and expectations and agreed that I needed to replace the two torsion springs. He finished the work in under 30 minutes including tuning up my garage. I could not be happier with First Call Garage doors! They are professional, reasonably priced, courtesous, on time and quick! Mike came out and did an excellent job. A power surge had fried the sensors on one door and had to be replaced. He also lubricated both doors (hinges and rollers), replaced the old key pad which hadn't worked since we moved in over 2 years ago, and programmed our car opener buttons to open the garage doors without the portable fob. Our garage door came off it's tracks in the evening and we were in panic mode. It was night time, we couldn't manually close the door and lock it, and we were preparing for a road trip the next day. I sent a request for an estimate through yelp, and within minutes, I had a response from them. I called their number to give them more details, and their technician, Michael, came out within the hour (this is a Sunday morning). It took him less than 30 seconds to figure out what was wrong with my garage door. He gave me different options, and I opted to have both spring coils replaced to spare me another round of misshaps in the next year or so. He finished the job in less than an hour also. 01/22/2021 "First call garage doors" came to service garage door as it was creaking. Husband was told - the spring needs to be replaced. We paid $480 for the new spring & associated upgrade. The receipt says "broken spring repair" but the spring was not broken, the technician told my husband that "it needed to be replaced or it will break". So a $65 service call became a $480 repair. 12/14/2022 "First call garage doors" (same technican) - Tony came out to see if the garage issue I was facing may be covered under warranty & may be repaired. The garage door was making a creaky sound and shaking but it was going up/down (but not smoothly). When I made the call, I spoke to Michael (business owner) and requested for someone to come help look at my issue and he said it would be a $60 service charge. I asked him if the technician would at least service the other garage door, I was looking for someone to lube the door and check it out. Tony (technician) came, saw the garage door and the noise it was making and incorrectly diagnosed the issue as a bad motor. He said that its a bad gear/sproket or a bad motor. Upon pressing to repair instead of replacing, he also told me that the gear/sproket can be fixed but it won't last. He then went on to tell me that the motor I have is old and needs to be replaced. He also told me that the current motor I have is "builder -grade motor" i.e., cheap quality. It's a 1/2 HP LiftMaster motor from 2015 and is working fine.I asked him to service and lube the parts for the other garage while he is here and he basically sprayed some WD40 around. Also he told me that the motor for my other garage may break even if he opens the garage door so he won't even touch it. We have been using that motor for 9 years, no issues at all. Continued to try to upsell me to replace motor and wanted to charge me $700 for replacement. I comparison shopped around and that price comes up higher by about $100 to $200 (depending upon who you ask, for the same motor). Labor I was quoted was $165 to $180 for replacing a motor.I didn't want to just bite the bullet so I called LifeMaster to see if the unit was under warranty or if they could help diagnose the issue. Over the phone their technician told me that the motor seems to be working correctly. Then I decided to get a second in-person opinion to see if it is the motor or the gear or the sprocket that are broken and if it can be repaired and as it turns out it wasn't the motor at all. The garage door bar had disconnected from the wall. Most likely when the technician (Tony) did the work back in 2021, he didn't connect the bar correctly to the studs and over time those screws that hold the bar to the wall just became lose and came off. Or he probably did shoddy work and was waiting for when it would fail and we would call him back and he would upsell us something else. What is most infuriating about this saga, is that the technician didn't even try to look for some other cause for the noise. He didn't stop to look around to see if everything was connected properly. In my opinion the business owner (Michael and technician Tony) don't want to help customers, they only want to make money by upselling unnecessary services and options. They also meet customers when they have a problem that they know very little about and so are most vulnerable to be cheated and pried upon. I want to warn my community to be aware of their unscrupulous behavior. I gave Michael a chance to simply refund the money and I wouldn't have posted this as he is a small business owner and mistakes happen. I have given him every chance to fix this be refunding me the money. Save your money, by not calling First Call Garage. They will upsell and repair stuff that may actually be in good working order. read more
