So our fabulous food tour guide really hit it out of the park for me with the later stops, and this…read moresmall patisserie place, which was the 4th stop on the tour, was another winner for me!
So firstly - the specialty here is not a Pasteis de Nata, but instead its a dessert called Pastel Feijão (hence the titular name of this place), which is more popular in the North of Portugal. The pastry filling here is not egg, but instead a mix of white beans (which are displayed in a jar on the table outside, so mystery solved ;-) and almonds. So if you have vegan/ vegetarian friends visiting Lisbon who cant eat the Pasteis de Nata, well then this place absolutely comes to the rescue!
Biting into this is like tasting a heavenly pillow of deliciousness. The bean taste disappears and what you are left with is a lovely almond-y smooth taste (and it does not taste anything like almond-butter, but more earthy and fresh). The closest comparison probably is the creme brulee- like soft and milky texture.
The Pastry Chef has won tons of rewards and his Pastel Feijão definitely was a winner for me. I'll be coming back here again when my travels next bring me back to Lisboa.
Note - Day 3 of Lisbon, Portugal adventures
