Specialties
First Nebraska Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. We offer many of the same services you find at other financial institutions, however we are motivated by service rather than profit. Our focus is "People Helping People" and our goal is to strengthen the financial well-being of our members.
We are owned and operated by our members - their savings represents a "share" in the cooperative. The benefits of membership are returned to our members, with better rates and lower fees to provide significant savings! Members are insured by NCUA to at least $250,000 per account.
We are proud to be ranked in the top 100 for four years in a row (2016-2019) for "exceptional fiduciary responsibility" by DepositAccounts.com, the independent third party evaluates the financial health of every federally insured credit union in the U.S. (more than 5,700 total). This is not just a great honor - we are the only credit union in Nebraska who has earned these high rankings four years straight!
We are open to the community! We offer membership to family members of our current credit union members, people who live, work, worship, or attend school in eight counties around Omaha & Lincoln; people in the education and healthcare field in Nebraska and Iowa, of Methodist or Lutheran religion, are a student in Nebraska and Iowa, or an employee of a select employee group.
History
Established in 1964.
First Nebraska was founded to provide benefits for employees and their family members of smaller businesses that could not provide benefits of their own credit union. Over the years a number of credits unions have merged to become part of First Nebraska. This includes serving educators with the merger of Educators Credit Union in 2000 - with roots going back to 1932. Other mergers included credit unions for Nebraska Methodist, Lutherans, World Insurance, Physician's Mutual, Alegent, First Data, and Greater Omaha.
Our charter has been changed to be more inclusive, by expanding membership to students and people in healthcare or education in Nebraska and Iowa. Then in 2016, we were able to open to the community. Now anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, Saunders, and Washington counties in Nebraska or Pottawattamie county in Iowa may join the credit union, along with their family members.
