He is knowledgeable, patient, and makes the material accessible--while I work in health care, I don't directly participate in codes, but need to know the how to's through an American Heart Association approved training center, which First Response is. The class was great and my instructor was very good. All the main points were covered and I'm a happy customer. My only complaint is that they phoned me the morning of my class and told me it's cancelled. They don't offer refunds and force you to schedule another class with them for another day. There are plenty of cpr companies in the city and my schedule was tight, and because of this policy, the choice to go-to another company on the same day was not an option. I realize it's in their policy/fine print when you sign up but it's still an unreasonable policy imo. ("Hey, pay us a deposit, and we'll tell you when you can come in.") read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! My ACLS and BLS were expired/expiring and i needed to renew. I signed up for a combo ACLS in person and BLS online course. The online portion for the ACLS/BLS probably took me ~1.5hrs total the night before (if you wanted to cheat it would obviously take less time, though...really? you gonna cheat on a life-saving course? *insert judgmental side-eye*). I was pretty flustered when I first arrived, and was confused as far as if I'd signed up for the correct course. Dave was incredibly understanding, offered to re-schedule me for the correct class without making any sorta fuss. Then i realized I WAS in the right course maybe 15 minutes later, and he graciously let me join in despite my earlier shenanigans. Dave was incredible instructor, made sure to emphasize the important points. There was only 1 other student in the course, and they emphasized that class sizes are at 50% during COVID. There was also a really intense dummy to practice on that had a pulse and was connected to the AED - made running through scenarios both more realistic and better for learning. Michelle tested me out of BLS and she was incredibly sweet as well. Prices were good, and I received my eCards immediately after completing the course. read more

No frills, efficient skills session. Found First Response Advantage on the AHA website after having completed the (separate) online portion of ACLS training. Called in to discover that the skills-only portion would not take a whole 8-hour day, but rather a short part of the early afternoon. Skills session consisted of being quizzed over an iPad simulator of rhythm strips and clinical algorithms; altogether the experience was quick, fair, and efficient. Only complaint was that I wasn't offered an electronic certificate (who has time for paper cards anymore?!?), and had to shell out another $11 to get one ordered from AHA. read more

Just completed my ACLS renewal course with David. I was initially nervous to find that I was the only student in the class, but it was a great experience. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and took the time to answer any questions I had. I have also previously taken the BLS renewal with Michelle and enjoyed the class as well. I had a great experience at First Response for the BLS class for healthcare providers. The class took about 3 hours, which went by quickly because of the great new videos that the American Heart Association produced. Say goodbye to the cheesy 80s videos and horrible acting! The practice runs were very helpful and the booklet and insert were great summaries to take back to the office as a refresher and to share the knowledge. Course cancelled last minute less than 24 hours before started - does not sound like a good review. The review is about to start. Instead of getting flustered and upset, the staff is really helpful with alternatives to make you certified in what you want easier. I have only 3 days to get certified and First Response Advantage ensure that I will not leave empty handed at the shortest time possible. While the AHA videos are superb, but the instructor can match it with their good teaching skills. Kudos to First Response Advantage! read more

Decent place - I got BLS recertified and ACLS certified here recently and am returning for my PALS certification. Only complaint was that the ACLS course was FAST - instructor obviously had done it a million times and just wanted to get out of there. Great for if you already know the material and just need the recert but not so great for actual learning and retaining. He seriously sounds like ScatMan John, he talked SO fast!! Course was supposed to be 10am to 8pm, but it was more like 10am to 3pm, no scheduled breaks (people took them as needed which was totally fine) and no real lunch - just a quick run downstairs, grab something and come back up to eat it. Overall I was happy that I wasn't there for 10 hours, but I think it was still a little TOO fast since it was my first ACLS course. read more

Loved the class here! If you're a quick learner or here for review/renewal, this is hands down the best place! I second what another reviewer said- our instructor went through the BLS course FAST. But, he was very willing to stop for questions and to explain things clearly when necessary. He was funny, had lots of great/relevant stories, and clearly knew what he was talking about. I actually enjoyed the CPR renewal class; who'da thunk. And our class only had 2 people.. can't complain there :) If you have ZERO healthcare/science/rescue background, maybe this place is 3-4 stars for you. But for everyone else, recommend recommend recommend. . . . PS: Materials come with registration fee. It's not clear on the website, but some other schools charge you extra for the books.. not so, here. Yay! read more

I took BLS training in July, 2019 and had Michelle Slikas as my instructor. She was wonderful - thorough, warm, and engaging. While the course was taught in the evening and everyone was tired, Michelle takes her job seriously, and ensures that everyone is processing the information thoroughly. During the break, she was particularly helpful when I had a mental block about one of the elements taught. She was tireless and supportive, and made sure I'd thoroughly digested the information before moving on. I was more surprised than she was, I'm sure, when I got a 100% on the exam. I credit this in large part to her exhaustive instruction, and approachable demeanor. I will definitely return for my renewal, in two years! read more

It's also in a convenient location as I grabbed some Shake Shack before I was to be trapped inside for hours. This 1 star ONLY refers to Charles the instructor, not anyone else. I have recertified about a dozen times and his class was hands-down the worst! He was very unorganized and sloppy. He likes to go over and over and over and over practice megacodes with EVERYONE in the class taking a turn. It took hours. 80% of his class is a waste of time, repeating over and over and over basic things most recertifyers know. Not the brightest guy and so he "teaches" to his level. Problem with that is everyone is easily above this guys level. It was like a remedial ESL version of an acls class. After the test, he then grades each test question by question... it took forever. Smarter and more efficient instructors always had a template of the test with correct answers punched thru and held over test sheets to quickly find wrong answers, takes 10-20 seconds to grade each test. So if you want to waste your entire day learning nothing then take his class. Otherwise, make sure Charles is not teaching your class. read more

I came to first advantage for my first ACLS course. I am an RN, but I was still a little intimidated by the amount of information (EKG's etc) that would be covered. The instructor David makes the class very informative and very fun at the same time. He goes through the information to make sure you really understand and have the proper training. The class is fairly paced, some of the information we went through a few times and then applied in megacode scenarios. The class lasted from 10 AM to about 5 PM. I definitely recommend taking ACLS or BLS here. read more
