Just…read moreminutes from the ferry you'll find this gem of a restaurant in the bustling "downtown" area. They sit directly on the water of Hallstätter See with views from a fairytale book. But that's not all, the food and service is spectacular. They are fast and efficient (so don't be alarmed if there is a little bit of a wait) you'll be sat with in no time. What they don't rush is the food.. wow. I cleaned my plate. I got the bacon wrapped chicken with the pasta and when I tell you it was the best meal I've eaten in awhile.. I mean it! The chicken was very moist considering it was wrapped in thick pieces of bacon and the creamy sauce complimented the saltiness perfectly. Pro tip: I'm not sure if I was supposed to but I did cut up the chicken and mix the pasta in with the sauce. Overall, a very charming dining experience that makes you feel like you're in a romance movie. Would highly recommend. *** NOTE THAT THEY ARE A CASH ONLY ESTABLISHMENT, THERE IS AN ATM NEXT TO THE BUILDING THAT CHARGES $2.50 TRANSACTION FEE ***

The menu, like most in Austria, was clearly marked with allergens present in the food. There was not much to choose from as far as vegan options go. I selected a potato and vegetable medley. I wasn't expecting much. When the dish was brought out, it looked a hundred times better than what I expected. The veggies appeared to be fresh and were nicely roasted. I took a bite and was blown away. Perfectly oiled and salted with an excellent texture. This was a great veggie medley. Overall, my wife and I were pleased with our experience here.

Service was super efficient and the servers speak good English. Price is not bad, given this is such a touristy spot. Be aware, it's difficult to find seating outside cause everyone wants to sit by the view. And no reservations. So you will just have to wait for tables to become available. Highly recommended!

If you want a cup of coffee/tea then it's worth it to sit outside to enjoy the view. Otherwise this place is way over priced and the service was not pleasant. If you want coffee, order at the bar and pay. Stand there and wait for your drinks. If you want to dine in, go seat yourself. There are more tables upstairs. The same person taking coffee orders at the bar was the same person that took our orders so you can imagine the wait once we were seated. He was the same person that brought out our food. In the end, if you pay cash, then you'll have to pay at the bar because they don't carry change. Or you can pay by credit card on the spot. The menu selection was limited. Austria is all about the schnitzel so we got that with a side of potato salad and cup of cafe melange. The food was okay and knowing that you could get more options for much lower price at the village was killing me.

This review is for overnight stay, not the restaurant. Good location, but disappointing. Felt more…read morelike a hostel than a hotel. We stayed in October, but the amount of tourists flooding this tiny waterfront town was astounding. I can't imagine what it's like in summer. Thus most hotel prices in town were still extremely high ($300 a night??), and this was the only affordable one advertising through Priceline. A free shuttle drove us from the P1 parking lot. The hotel owner was not pleased with our presumably late arrival at 8 or 9pm. Our room was on the third floor (no elevator). The bathrooms/showers were shared. In our room was a sink and a heater, which we made use of. There was an electronic tea kettle available outside the room, although no cups in sight. There was also a communal microwave and mini- fridge. No utensils or plates, though... Since the sleepy town didn't come alive until 9am or so on a weekday, our frantic morning search for coffee ended in a fancy hotel nearby. Tips for staying here: 1. Bring cash - no cards accepted. 2. Bring your own cups and utensils if you plan to make your own hot beverage or eat leftovers. If I visit Hallstatt again, I plan to stay in Obertraun, closer to the ice caves. The hotels there are less expensive and not very far from Hallstatt.

After taking a hard look at the $200-300/day options, we decided on Cafe Restaurant zum Muhlbach as it was one of the few that were reasonably priced. The owner (I think) was friendly and spoke English well. She also helped us find the closest swimming spot and someone brought our luggage to our room while we were out. Awesome! The room itself is small and nondescript but we did have a pretty patio with a fabulous view of the lake. The shared bathrooms (which I was dreading) was actually not an issue at all. On our floor alone there were 3; they looked renovated and were super clean! The only thing I had a major issue with was the quality of the bedding. I get that we're not paying for the Ritz, but the slippery, polyestery, heat-trapping sheets and blankets in a non-air conditioned room on a hot June night was unbearable. I had a terrible night's sleep and was thankful to only stay one night. Overall it's a fine B&B for the price and the bedding issue is such an easy one to remedy. I couldn't sleep at all but others may find it ok. The location is super central and there's an affectionate chubby cat for company.
