My friend and I are big seafood eaters and wanted to eat some local fish, our hotel recommended this restaurant. We mostly enjoyed the food, the fish was a little bland but cooked well. This was a really cute restaurant to visit during our stay in Hallstatt. It is on the second floor of the hotel, located right in the marketplace. It has very charming decor - on theme for an Austrian ambiance. We ordered the pumpkin soup, lamb with rosemary potatoes and pumpkin ratatouille and the grilled deer with green beans, apple red cabbage and potato croquettes. Everything was really delicious! They have a limited wine selection on the food menu but when we ordered, the waiter showed us their complete wine menu which was much more extensive! Overall we had a great experience here! We also loved the traditional Austrian outfits the servers wear. Adds a nice touch. read more

Great selection, tasty food, interesting drinks. We came here for dinner in winter when many of the restaurants were closed but it was the best place we found in the whole city. Waiting staff were polite and helpful and happy to explain the many interesting menu options. After eating here, we came back the next night. It was my introduction to schnapps, and I had the pear the first night and apricot the second. If you like traditional American martinis, order one here. You may not recognize it since it's like 1:1, and vermouth is actually good, and there are ice cubes :) read more

In a town with lots of tourist traps, we were relieved to find Seewirt Zauner. It is a hotel restaurant, but it's professionally run and the food was yummy. We avoided the spendy local fish dishes and got a pork/potatoes thing and something vegetarian. The pork dish was huge and enough to feed me and my two little kids! While there wasn't a view of the lake, the interior was nicely appointed Austrian mountain decor, which was enjoyable. There was 1 other kid. It was pretty quiet. Overall happy w/ this and recommend it. read more

Pretty good for a small town! We got the mixed grill for two and the 1000g mixed fish for two. The fish plate was pricey (€75) but quite delicious. It came with three whole fishes (trout, like, local reineck) and tasted fresh. Service is not the most attentive but overall solid choice in a small town. read more

Man, food is hard to come by in Hallstatt and good service is even harder to find. Luckily we were able to find this restaurant open and with average service. The décor is great, the employee friendly but slow. They have local beers on tap which I always appreciate. The menu had many things to choose from so no matter how picky you should be able to finds something. I had the schnitzel and my husband had the local fish. Both were ok, not bad and not great. The location is good and easy to get to no matter where you are in town. They seemed to be open more often than other places so this is a good safe option. read more

We had a magical time at the restaurant. We were there to celebrate my birthday. How can you beat a snowy night, beautiful Christmas music playing and some of the nicest people we have ever met. We had the Kabob platter, the lake fish, the Cheese and the beef soup with pancakes and we were given a tasty piece strudel and schnapps shots on the way out. Bill came to about $107 Euros. But we were given complimentary dessert, champagne shots and had great service and great food. In the end it comes down to atmosphere, and hard to beat an authentic Austrian restaurant at such a great time of the year. 5 stars for great food and a great time. read more

Get the mixed grill plate and grilled fish from the lake. We saw a lot of good reviews on this place and decided to give it a try. The restaurant has a very nice decor. It was recently renovated after some great flood in Hallstatt a couple of years ago. The restaurant was pretty crowded the night we arrived but luckily I saw two open tables in the balcony. I asked the waitress if we can sit at the table on the balcony. She asked some other server and then told us one of them is available. Lucky us. There were quite a lot of options on the menu so we didn't know which to choose. But having fish that came from the clear water lake does sound like an intelligent choice so we decided to get the biggest fish option from the menu (they give a choice of what size fish you want). We also decided to just get a mixed grill plate instead of trying to decide which meat option to get. And I'm happy to say that both of those choice were PERFECT! They were cooked just right and they were umm umm great. I would strongly recommend these two choices when you are there. The kids ordered the smaller mixed meat with egg/potatoes and kabab with rice. Both were very flavorful and did not disappoint. Staff were very friendly and came and chatted with us when we had some questions about their beautiful town. Prices were very reasonable for this touristy town and such wonderful food and service. I would come back again and again on my future visits here in Hallstatt. read more

We stayed at this hotel. It was a warm summer day. We sat outside, enjoying the square full of tourists. We got the grilled fish from the lake and Austrian beer. The waiter was very friendly and helpful. The price was high as expected from the season. One downside was the annoying summer wasp which could look pretty terrifying. read more

We made reservations here in January and arrived on the scheduled date in October. After a long train ride we got to the hotel only to find it completely closed. The following day I went to speak with them about it and met a very loud, "all talk and no listen" woman. She was adamant that we had cancelled and that it was all my issue and I didn't know what I was talking about. While still yelling, she went and printed her "proof" of my cancellation. I did cancel a prior reservation in July of 2020 due to Covid and this was the date on her copy. I had in my hand a copy of my later confirmation for my new booking in January of 2021. She continued to shout we cancelled showing me her dated cancellation message in 2020 while I had in my hand the latest confirmation in 2021, yet she had no interest in even looking at what I was trying to tell her. There are many, and better choices in Hallstatt. I'd recommend you don't subject yourself to this totally overbearing, even when she's wrong, woman running the Seewirt Zauner. read more

Great dinner here last night. We had a reservation and got a reserved table out on the balcony. Started with a smoked fish appetizer and the zauner soup. Both were great. Let's see--very over priced, horrible service, and just ok meal = meh meal. Our big night out while in the Salzkammergut was to be this restaurant which I had heard was fabulous. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. The service was extremely slow -- possibly because the waitstaff expended so much energy seating and/or redirecting the large number of eastern tourists with large cameras click click clicking in the entrance way and blocking traffic-- but more likely because they just didn't have it together as there seemed to be a large number on hand. After a half hour wait at our table I finally asked if we could order a drink and possibly have some bread. 15 minutes later we were asked for our orders. 45 minutes later our orders came (we both ordered the fish platter) and was just a platter of cooked trout with no side vegetables or garnishment as was depicted in the picture. The waiter hurriedly asked us if we wanted to fillet the fish ourselves?? I realize this may be part of the presentation of uber fresh fish but I declined the invitation and asked if he would do it for us. I then asked him when we could expect the vegetables that were to accompany the main dish and he said "oh that's right--they'll be out right away". They came 20 minutes later in a ceramic bowl. The fish was fresh and good but for 35 euros a person--basically about $90.000--a few pounds of fresh trout was an exhorbitant price. What was definitely good however was their Kaiserscharm...the best I've ever had. I hope Zauner Grill can resume their credibility as an excellent restaurant but it appears that they have a ways to go. read more

We came in late in the evening on a Thursday and the restaurant was fairly empty. We were seated quickly and the service was prompt and polite. This is a very nice restaurant, and we had a nice meal here. It's just that the prices are not equal to the food they are serving. The food was good, but not great. I'm not even sure that the fish they are serving is fresh from the lake, as I saw an employee taking cases of fish from a freezer up to the kitchen while we were here. The dining options in such a small, touristy town are limited, but for the price they are charging the food really should be better. read more

Food overpriced and confusing service. I wanted to have the local fish, as depicted on the menu and, when I tried to order it, the fish was not available because it wasn't in its season. That's ok but they could have at least warned about it being a seasonal fish. Then I tried to order the 400g smoked trout (there were 4 size options in the menu) and again I couldn't, the smoked trout was only available in the 300g version. In the end, I just gave up and ended up with the 300g version, which was served cold. The bread served as a starter (€1,7 each small bread) was warmer than the fish. I have to agree with what others said, the food is definitely overpriced for what it is. Also, our waiter forgot part of my order until it was too late and I didn't want it anymore. Food is very average, the fish looks kind of sad on the plate. read more
