We stopped here for an early breakfast before touring the town of Salzburg. This place was one of the few that opened early (before 8am). We got a croissant and a coffee and both were excellent...the croissant was flaky, buttery and deliciously warm. Our server was very nice and friendly. We really enjoyed the breakfast here. We saw a nice display of tortes in the dining area and our mouths watered with the selection of them....desserts seem to be a specialty here. I guess you have to go here for the experience but it is painfully average. The service is super fast because they have non stop waiters/waitresses that rotate tables. It is a tourist trap so it is a churn and burn type of spot. They serve you fast because they want to get you in and out and open your table back up. After our Sound of Music tour, we were so happy to find Café Tomaselli right in the middle of St. Stephen's Square. This place is charming and filled with energy, and we found a balcony seat on the second floor -- perfect for people-watching! We had kombucha tea, passion fruit soda, and apple strudel, all light and refreshing. Service was friendly, though there's no AC, so it can get warm on hot days. Historic café. Mozart visited this cafe when it was under a different name. The cafe has dark wood chairs with papery mesh seats, classic portraits of various persons on the walls, and dark wood wall accents to complement the cream-colored wallpaper. To order a pastry, you examine the pastries at display case and then tell your server what you want to eat. I tried the Haustorte. It was more dense and dry than I prefer, but I think that is consistent with the Austrian style. Overall, I would recommend visiting Café Tomasellí for the novelty of consuming a dessert in a historic space. read more

This was one of my favorite places when I came to Salzburg back in 2015, and it's still good, just not as amazing as I remembered. Their hot chocolate is still elite, but their breakfast is kind of mediocre. Their desserts looked fantastic, so please try one for me! In my mind, a long train ride is like a little slice of heaven. I've become infatuated with the timelessness of it all, the way stepping into a traincar feels in some ways like stepping into another chapter of time. I love how it's sleepy and invigorating all at once, the way I'm lulled to sleep as we slip over the tracks yet am periodically woken up by the excited voice of a conductor, a reminder that I'm traversing land that begs to be seen. On this particular day, I found myself on a train from Vienna to Salzburg. I was swapping out a bustling city -- one that had enchanted me in just a few days' time -- for a sleepy mountain town with two very distinct claims to fame. The first is the renown that comes with being the birthplace of Mozart, the place where one of history's most distinguished composers found his footing. The second is the glamour derived from being the shooting locale for several scenes from The Sound of Music, a widely beloved film whose music had enraptured me just as it had enraptured much of the globe. And on this day, I can promise you -- the hills were very much alive. When I finally disembarked in Salzburg, I realized that the train station was in a part of town far more contemporary than I was expecting. By the time I passed both a Burger King and a Subway, I was verifiably confused. I thought to myself that Julie Andrews would have never stood for this, yet I continued further toward the town center, dodging small raindrops along the way. By the time I laid eyes on the Mirabell Palace, the first of many sites from the film I'd encounter that day, I was sold. It truly did feel like stepping into a storybook, a movie. A town that existed only in fiction, as if too picturesque to be part and parcel of reality itself. I strolled down cobbled streets lined with little shops hawking mozartkugel and other sweets, the pastel-colored buildings looking almost like treats themselves. A historic cafe near Residenzplatz in Salzburg, it is rumored that this is the same place that Mozart and his family frequented. We showed up at 735, shortly after they opened and were promptly seated. Newspapers are available in German for people to read while enjoying a morning coffee. The pastries were not out yet and were still being prepared. We ordered two large coffees with cream, a cheese omelette with a croissant, and two sausages and a roll. The sausages where juicy and light and were served with fresh horseradish and mustard. The cheese omelette was incredibly cheesy and buttery and went well with the pastry. Dogs are allowed inside and you get a chance to see how the locals enjoy their mornings in this sleepy mountain town. Service was friendly and quick and our waiter was fairly attentive. It's definitely a place to go visit before embarking on any major tourist attraction in Salzburg. read more

My must-go whenever I visit Salzburg, Their Esterhazy torte and their Nusstorte are legendary, but make sure to try their almond milk -- that's cow milk with almonds, not milk made from almonds, a Mozart favorite -- and, if you like weisswurst, Cate Tomaselli is one of the few places that serve it after noon, and it's very good, with the traditional pretzel and sweet mustard (but no beer). A very delightful place to sit in an outdoor cafe and people watch. Since the place has been open since 1705 I'd say they are doing OK. There seemed to be a surprisingly local crowd for a rather tourist area. The place is neat, clean and ever so high quality coffeehouse/cafe. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient and seemed to keep everything flowing quite well. We had a "Lobsters lemon and mint" drink and a tall glass of a chocolate ice cream drink, both very refreshing. It came with a side of water on a beautiful serving tray. They bring around a large covered tray of pastries should you decide to have some. We declined but it looked very tempting. Came in for brunch after 10am mass at the Salzburg Cathedral, and was able to sit down right away inside. We were waiting for someone to come seat us at first but another kind customer told us that you seat yourself. Food options included ham & eggs, omelettes, mixed platter (turkey, salami, cheese), croissants, etc. We ordered a couple - nothing outstanding but decent. Coffee was rather good, however. And of course, we also got cake. The coffee cake had a tall layer of coffee mousse in the middle with a sort of meringue crust and topping. Really light and delicious. The truffle cake was alright - dense and seemed to have a lot of nuts. The food/drinks and desserts are to be ordered and paid to separate waiters/waitresses. I believe it was cash only. Although it's pretty touristy, this is a really great cafe/coffee shop in Salzburg. I grew up eating some pretty amazing strudel that my aunt would make and it's been hard over the years to find a strudel quite like it. The last few times I've been through Austria (and even Salzburg) I couldn't find a place that made it quite right until I came to Cafe Tomaselli. By the time I took my first bite, I was sold. Knowing the history of this cafe, I know it won't close down anytime soon so my only hope is that they never change the recipe for their strudel as it is so hard to find it made in this exact style. You don't get vanilla sauce with it which is fine as it doesn't need it and it has the right amount of powdered sugar sifted on top of it. I pretty much only drink coffee in German speaking countries as its the only coffee I like and the coffee from this cafe is pretty exceptional smooth, a balanced flavor, and the addition of cream of sugar (to me personally) makes it really fantastic! I came on a Sunday morning (around 8:30) and the cafe was not busy. The gentleman who seated us was pretty rude and I didn't appreciate that but our server was really friendly, helpful, and kind. I WILL come to this cafe every single time I visit Salzburg. The strudel is just perfect! read more

In this area of Salzburg, expect everything to be touristy. This place, especially. Cafe Tomaselli is among the oldest cafes in Austria, and even Mozart came here (this dude was born in 1756). Besides a history lesson, Cafe Tomaselli offers a huge variety of breakfast items and cakes. I've tried some other cafes around here, but this place is my favorite. I didn't get to try this because I came at 7:00a, but in the afternoon, the second floor balcony is open and it overlooks the plaza. Everyone recommends sitting there for people-watching. I think it's worth it. My friend Sherry and I came here twice, and we ordered eggs (scrambled and soft-boiled. I prefer soft-boiled), croissant (must-get), muesli (oatmeal, really good and filling), and apfelstrudel (apple strudel, a general must-try in Austria). I had my first European croissant here, and I was hooked. It's so flaky and soft... We also shared a hot chocolate, which I really loved! So rich and chocolaty... TLDR: Go to Cafe Konditorei Fürst instead! Worst service in all that we experienced in Salzburg. Multiple events caused us to leave prior to eating. When we first entered, we were told to go upstairs. We went upstairs, noticed that many tables were reserve, found a table not reserved and sat down. Waiters scurried by and we finally flagged a young man down for a menu. He gave us one menu to share between the four of us. Ok fine, we can deal. Then another gentleman approached us and rudely told us we can only sit outside. Ok, not a problem. We don't mind sitting outside despite the drizzle. As the drizzle became more intense, I told my sons let's move inside as I don't want to eat wet cake. As I made my way downstairs an old man yelled at me for taking my menu. As I turned around to return it, he yelled at me twice more "put the menu back!" That was it as I refuse to be treated this way. We made our way across to Cafe Konditorei Fürst and experienced the COMPLETE opposite. We had warm and friendly service. The cake and coffee were great! Great coffee and dessert in a classic Salzburg Coffee House My wife & I recently went to Salzburg with a Tour Group. One day a group of friends I was with went to Cafe Tomaselli. One of our group had said that Rick Steves had suggested this was a good place to go in Salzburg. Well. He was right. We all had some delicious coffee - several different types and flavors - and some dessert. These folks were smart. They bring to your table a tray full of actual desserts you can eat right then and there. Yes, "instant ordering" with no wait does work. Yes, the coffee was quite enjoyable as well. I decided to try a different coffee for me - the Melange. Although it appeared to be similar to a Cappuccino with more milk than coffee; it was still quite good. The chocolate cake was very good as well. Of course, you simply cannot go wrong when "Chocolate" is one of the ingredients in your dessert. Turns out we did right by listening to Rick Steves - of course. If you are looking for good coffee and dessert in Salzburg, you will also be glad you decided to check out Cafe Tomaselli as well. Ate here without knowing it was a place that Mozart used to chill at when he lived in Salzburg. That aside - nice outdoor seating, nice indoor decor, and a nice selection of stuff. I went with sausages for breakfast because my blood-pork level was getting low, and it as a good decision, as weird as coffee and sausage is, I was totally happy about it and didn't get a funny look from the waiter or anything. I didn't sample any of the cakes or sweets, but they had a good assortment and they looked good...I just can't vouch. Adorable historic cafe in Salzburg. We were there on a very rainy day and it was beyond packed. Everyone seemed to be happy to be in out of the rain and enjoy the cozy warmth of coffee, breakfast and pastries. I had tea and the traditional apple strudel, and my husband had an egg and sausage breakfast dish and a fruit tart. The fruit tart was our favorite of the items we tried. The servers handled the crowd expertly. If they were annoyed, they didn't show it. I was amazed at how they could so efficiently keep track of al the people and tables coming and going, particularly when everyone seats themselves. Great place for desserts and coffee. I came here one morning for breakfast and split a couple of pastries with my sister. Waiters walk around with trays of pastries and you basically just pick the ones you want. We had a chocolate and strawberry one that was amazing. It was such a perfect day to start the day. The ambiance is great. It's a very refined cafe and you can tell it's a place where locals frequent. The breakfast menu offers a huge variety of everything you'd need to have a truly authentic Austrian breakfast. There are also small private rooms if you want a little more quiet and privacy to read your morning paper. The cafe is truly beautiful. As Austria's oldest coffee house, and as a place that was frequented by Mozart himself (his house is right down the street), Cafe Tomaselli is always packed. You will definitely have a difficult time trying to find a spot here to sit as locals battle it out with Asian tourists on their Sound of Music bus tours to find a place to have some afternoon coffee with cake. One of their specialty drinks is the "Mozart's Almond Milk," (4€, literally just almond milk with cream) that was said to be the favorite of the composer himself. That's right, this place has figured out how to charge roughly US$5 for a glass of milk. They also have different coffees and hot chocolates that you can order, all around 4,50€ each. Go with this option. Don't be that tourist that buys a glass of milk for US$5 because you're in Salzburg and it has the word Mozart in it. A slice of the various cakes will cost 4,50€ each as well, and they are a little bit more hit or miss. Their double chocolate cake was not nearly as good as their chestnut cake or cheesecake (which was a lot fluffier and lighter than the American version that I'm used to). Since 1705 (because there were definitely credit cards then), this place has been cash only - you will also be charged separately for drinks and cakes. If you manage to come on a day with good weather, I highly suggest sitting on the balcony to get some great people-watching views of the plaza right across from the restaurant. If you're visiting Salzburg, definitely take a stop here before you explore the rest of the core of the city. read more
