It's a popular spot and not a large place, so make reservations. Hubby had to try the Morton Bay Bugs- delicious, tastes like a small lobster. I had the King Prawn tempura- yum! Batter was very light and cooked perfectly. We ordered glasses of wine with dinner but the do allow BYOB. Service was great, they were very busy but we were in no rush. read more

Really good food in an old historic and quiet section of Sydney near the Rocks. Found this on Yelp, on Saturday night I took a long walk up to Millers Point and waited for it to open. At 6pm it immediately filled up. The staff are smart about the food and drink and steered me to the mixed crustacean platter. Very good, first bugs for me and they were delicious. It's a cute restaurant on the corner! As you walk in, you are very lucky to get a table because they are busy any day of the week and weekends are tough to get in! But so worth the wait! As we sit, the server greets us and gets our drinks going! One bottle of delicious wine suggested by the manager of the restaurant! Then we ordered pretty much every dish on the menu! The appetizers are all good! The entrees are cooked to perfection! The flavors in your mouth from every bite of every dish here will WOW you!! We loved it so much, we went back the next day for lunch! Ordered everything again! There's a fresh prawn appetizer that is stacked up high and excellent! Every bite I was amazed! The seafood pasta I had twice and the mussels are so tender, they melt on your tongue as soon as you put it in your mouth! Wow! Barramundi was disappointing, as was the other fish dish my wife had. They were fresh, just not real tasty, and a bit pricey imo. Limited seating and no waiting area so reservations are recommended. Wow! Just arrived in this beautiful country, and if your place always has this fresh of fish, we're in! For starters, we had the calamari, it was amazing! Lunch included King prawns grilled served with stir-fried asparagus, spinach, shallots and ginger in a spicy butter sauce and my husband had the Whole Rock Lobster w/lemon butter and pear salad. Small, seating maybe 30 downstairs and a few more upstairs. Casual, intimate, and great food. I started with Sydney rock oysters, au natural. They're always good, and here too. Then tiger prawns, butternut squash thinny sliced, on a delicious gnocchi. This is a well-established restaurant and they stay with good basic recipes. Absolutely delicious. We shared a couple of good Aussie whites. All with excellent service. This is definitely not a tourist destination, while claiming to be part of The Rocks. Its a healthy walk from the main part of the Rocks, with plenty of taxi traffic to grab a cab afterwards. Definitely worth the effort if the locals haven't booked all the tables. read more

Recommended by our concierge at the Marriott as a local place. Reviews can't do it justice. Soft shell crab on the specials as an app (entree in Aussie) was better than any in Maryland. We're tourists, not from this country and I've never has worse service in my life. We didn't have a reservation and I would have been happier to be told sorry we don't have room than to be told sure sit at this table. It took 30 minutes to get a drink order. Entrees took another 30 minutes, then they had the audacity to say the seafood pie took 20 minutes to cook (not mentioned on the menu that it needs extra time). I had read and heard a lot about this restaurant prior to my visit to Sydney. While I was in Sydney, I made a point to go to this place. I went on a Monday for lunch. It's located at the Rock, a few blocks away from the main tourist area. The restaurant has two levels and a patio. It was not busy at all and I was quickly seated. There were only six or seven tables occupied on the first level. There was only one server who was helping all the tables. She was running around but it took her a while to get to me and bring me water and a piece of bread. After seating for a while, I tried to ask her what she recommended on the menu but she asked me to wait because she was busy. She finally came and suggested a few entrees and a few main courses. She also explained that the entrees were basically appetizers and they were very small. She also explained that I could order an entree in a larger size (double size) and the price would be doubled. I found the appetizers pricy. I have been paying the same amount in Sydney for main dishes at some good restaurants. I ordered the dumplings with salmon. It was tasty but nothing to die for. My overall experience was very average. I don't have a reason to go back there. read more

First time in Sydney, and Fish at the Rocks did not disappoint when it came to the seafood. The service was lovely and very attentive. One of my dinner mates ordered the flounder, and then later saw the specials menu and changed his mind and the waitress was extremely accommodating even with the lateness of the change. The bread was great - I can only eat bread in foreign countries it seems- light and fluffy on the inside with a crusty outside, it was delightful when dipped in the oil and salt on the table. They had a lovely wine selection as well, and we ended up ordering the sauvignon blanc, as well as a merlot. The merlot was yummy, but the sauvignon was wonderful, a crisp fruity wine that paired exceedingly well with my seafood. I ordered the calamari for my first entree, and then the seafood salad for my main, and finally topped it off with the creme brulee for dessert. Everything was spectacular. The calamari was cooked perfectly, none of that rubbery texture when overcooked, and had a yummy sauce with it. The seafood salad I had was also very tasty, a fair amount of seafood (prawns, scallops, sea bug, and salmon) was placed over some lettuce and other small sliced veggies. It was very filling and delicious. I then had creme brulee for dessert and it was honestly the best creme brulee I have ever had. It had the perfect glass like texture of the sugar layer that was very satisfying to crack. The vanilla bean creme brulee was to smooth and thick and delicious that it took me a couple of small bites to get to the bottom where I noticed some berry compote or some sort. I think it may have been raspberry or strawberry, either way it was incredible and unexpected. It paired perfectly with the other flavors, and really elevated the whole dessert. The only poor thing I had to say about this place was that we were seated right by the door, and at one point someone held it open for quite some time and there was a very brisk, cold breeze. We had a very unpleasant experience at Fish at the Rocks. We had just flown in from the states today and our hotel recommended them on Valentine's Day. When we arrived there we were told they had reservations for months previously and we could sit outside if we like and were made to feel like second class citizens with subpar service. We ordered an entrée platter for two which was listed for a minimum of two people including salt and pepper calamari (5 small pieces) two dumplings, two small crab cakes, two shrimp, and a small green papaya salad. When we returned home we realized that the $24 for the entrée for two was doubled at $48! We called the restaurant they said that it did say in the menu it said planner or two but then it also said pp in small type. We were also given a Credit card surcharge even though our credit card had no conversion fees. A restaurant that is supposedly highly rated should not have misleading menu charges nor poor customer service as we experienced. read more

Ate here last night with my daughter on recommendation from hotel. Best meal of my Australian trip. Highly recommend this spot. Started with naked oysters and mussels in tomato wine broth for two appetizers. A+ rating for both. Oysters were fresh and meaty and mussels were great. Got extra bread to sole up the sauce. My daughter had pasta with shellfish which I tried. It was very good. I had the curry whole fish (burrimindi) and it was really good. I had a nice glass of NZ SB and there was a good by the glass wine list. Service was fantastic and price was not too bad (about 45 dollars American each pre tip). Fish at the Rocks came highly recommended to us and our experience did not fail to live up to the hype. Upon entering the quaint restaurant perched, we were warmly greeted. From the moment we were served the delicious crisp yet soft bread, it was a great culinary experience. We started with the scallops which had a delightful polenta and sweet onions with tomatoes style jam. The seafood raviolis were amazing and had a refreshing broth. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the salmon which was accompanied by perhaps the best feta cheese from Tasmania we have ever had. The Barramundi was also quite delicious with perfectly crisped skin. To cap it off I managed to devour the Rhubarb Apple Crisp. Would highly recommend. read more
