One of my all time favorite local spots in SLO County! This off leash dog park in Avila Beach is so freaking amazing, I would come here every single day if I could. My pups absolutely love it here and we always meet the cutest, happiest dogs. :) You can walk the entire length of the beach area very easily and it is such a beautiful spot to watch the sunset, have a picnic or maybe even catch a whale or two in the distance. Parking is great and we always find a spot right by the walkway down to the beach. Added bonus - there are really clean, well maintained bathrooms just steps away from the beach as well. Beautiful beach but it seems no longer a dog beach. Both sets of steps featured a no dogs sign. Unless they mean just not this breed... Head south to Olde Port beach for your doggie adventures. read more

Very small area, far away from town but near something with lots of end of day traffic.

Our dogs were OBSESSED with this spot! The reviews were correct. PLENTY of parking, on both sides of the street. We did come on a Thursday, late afternoon, which may be the reason that there was parking readily available. Not sure if it's still a dog beach BUT we went towards the end...where we saw all of the dogs off leash. I also made sure I didn't see any signs that said that dogs had to be on leash. It was a super windy day so we didn't stay long but our dogs loved every minute of it! read more

I love this beach, and so does my dog. Please be friendly, and pick up after yourself and your dog if you visit this location. It's beautiful, and it would be great if we all work together to keep it that way! There are no signs stating that this is a dog beach, just a doggie poop bag station at the entrance. There are public stall bathrooms at the top before heading down to the sand. Entrance: There are two ways down, by a large ramp (I believe it used to be a boat launch ramp maybe?), or by stairs. There is also an accessible ramp where the stairs are, for wheelchair users, or anyone that finds stars difficult. The stairs and ramp that are together go in a zig-zag pattern. The other giant ramp visible from the road just goes straight down and it's pretty steep. Accessibility: There is a ramp by the stairs. For wheelchairs or to walk on the ramp I suggest the one where the stairs are, rather than the giant ramp facing the road for anyone with walking difficulties. Perimeter: There are no gates or anything to keep the dogs down at the beach, so if any want to escape they can just run up the stairs or up either ramp onto the road, so it is good to have a solid recall with your dog. However, all the fun is on the sand and water and I have not seen any dogs trying to leave. My dog won't even get in the car to leave, he makes my boyfriend carry his 57lb body into the car. Cleanliness: There is washed up seaweed on the shore pretty often, sometimes in large piles, so I would suggest to just keep your dog away from it. Sometimes there are a lot of little flies/insects when there's a lot of seaweed and it's annoying walking through. I might have inhaled a few. Other than that it's a very clean beach. People: I always greet the owners of the dogs my boy starts to play with, and everyone has always been super friendly. I only witnessed one person with a not so friendly dog during one visit. There are people having picnics, gatherings, or just sunbathing, so that's also when having a good recall comes in handy. read more

Omg...dog's paradise. Nice beach for dog lovers to stroll with the dogs. Met nice dogs and people too. All dogs were romping off-leash and it was pretty spread out. We loved that parking was easy and free right on the street. The access to the beach is via stairs or a wide cement ramp / driveway. There are doggie poop bags available at the bottom of the driveway. read more

This is the best dog beach!! My doggo gets soo excited when go here! There are clean public restrooms at the top. A ramp or staircase to use to get down to it. The beach is good size to walk. You can spend an hour or a day. No leash required. ( I carry one just in case it is needed. My dog can run and play till his heart is content! read more

our dog had a great time here, but she has a great time anywhere she gets to swim (even though she does often). all the dogs and their people that we've met here so far were well-behaved, even on a beautiful weekend afternoon. not super huge, if you dog likes to cover ground, but sheltered enough that the surf isn't too harsh for most dogs on most days. read more

OH WHAT FUN! Parking along the main road is ample. Large expanses of firm flat sand made running for the doggies easy. The waves came in ripples so no doggies got washed into the ocean ! All the dogs were friendly and sociable. Please DO NOT bring your dog if they are not good around all dogs both big and small as well as kids cause there are plenty of them all. An absolute perfect find for your dog! This was a stop for my family & two dogs (small & big). From what I can see it's street parking only. Lots of parking (mid Nov.) & not on a very busy street. There are two potties for people lol. There is a bag post down by the beach w baggies in case you forgot yours. It's a very big beach & the day we came it had a fair amount of dogs! I felt very safe with the crowd & the dogs that were there. My smaller dog did well & kept to the smaller dogs. Although, my bigger dog romped with the other bigger dogs & had the time of her life. The owners did hover around & kept a close eye as dogs played. All the owners were very friendly. Do note that when coming down to the beach, dogs will come up to you. My five year old didn't mind but we did have someone walk w her. Bring a water dish!! The dogs play hard & will need water. Not sea water obviously. Please clean up after yourselves & your doggies. Otherwise, clean, beautiful & friendly beach! Let's keep it like that! read more

There had to have been like 15-20 other dogs there at this time. People were so friendly. Seems like everyone picks up after themselves because we didn't see dog poop anywhere. Any dog beach gets 5 stars in my book. We had a lovely time here. It's a clean beach with a wide area of sand. Lots of friendly dogs and happiness! I think most of the dogs were friendly and the owners tended to clean up after the dogs. I definitely recommend checking this beach out. It was very fun! Parking is easy and on the street. My dog had a great time playing. Minus one star for some weird toxic waste looking stuff by the water. Not sure what it was but it was gross and stained my skin yellow/orange until I washed it off. read more

SUPER DOG FRIENDLY! You don't have to have awesome dogs to come here, but if you do, this is the spot for you and your fur babies. I was not as lucky as the prev reviewer and came here on a sunny day in April. I thought I had died and went to hell. My skin sizzled under the CA sun. I was well done and charred outside in 2 hours. Come prepared. No shade whatsoever. Your furbabies won't want to leave and you can't make them cuz they will give you the eyes. So unless you want to turn lobster red, bring a beach umbrella or canopy. read more

We're dog people. They are more than our dogs, they are our kids. We search out all play areas/dog parks/dog beaches for our boys. We were staying in Grover Beach and someone we met at the dog park in Aroyo Grande told us about Avila Beach/Fisherman's beach. We did enjoy this beach a lot. My only gripe is that the highway is right next to the beach. I was constantly watching my dogs to make sure they didn't venture too close to the short wall that separates the beach from the highway. I preferred Avila Beach, but thats only available to dogs before 10am and after 5pm. read more

The best I personally think it was good because my dog couldn't get out my dog and she went in the water for one by herself and it was it it was a good exercise from the actual beach had breakfast by the actual beach and it is a kind of for a while but it's a good exercise so I think that it gave a good experience and I do it again. read more

Came here yesterday with my two dogs. Expecting it would be off-leash, I let my dog roam around and said hi to all dogs and people. Ran into so many beach-posers who told to keep my dog away from them. Also, one guy was walking his dog and kicked my dog because his dog got aggressive with my dog. Seriously!? The people who attended the beach were mean and nasty. First of all, do not bring your kids to this beach and expect any dog to be recalled immediately. There are many things going on and they get overly excited. They are animals. Secondly, there is another beach that does not allow any dogs. Thirdly, you should not bring any aggressive dogs onto the beach. read more

This is a great place to bring your dog. You've got about a half mile of open beach that is enclosed on both ends so your pooch will always stay in the dog-approved area. It's clean, owners seem to pick up after their pet, and people pick up after themselves. read more

Fisherman's beach is awesome! Super dog friendly. I have 3 and when they got out of the car they just went nuts! The sand is beyond soft but super sticky to your hands! The water is crystal blue. There are waves but that didn't stop my 3 from having a great time. As the day wore on more and more dogs showed up and all played together. Dog bags are there for your use if you forgot your own! We were there on an over cast day and it was beautiful. I can only imagine (until we get up there again!) what it would be like on a sunny day! I see a picnic with my pups in the future! read more

Amazing place to take your fur babies. All the dogs are running around and having fun!! Just be careful if you bring food as the doggies tend to follow their noses, but all the dogs that are wandering are friendly! Love coming here in the summer. Fun beach for dogs and their humans! No kelp and tons of flies like at our dog beach in Santa Cruz. Few flies here. Our dog hates flies and wasn't bothered at all here. If you have a friendly dog, this place is a MUST! We don't usually take our dog off the leash, but here we did so without hesitation. She was in heaven!! She ran free with other dogs and in the water and along the shore. It was a lot of fun. I never worried about her because there is no where for her to go. It's also very family friendly. My kids swam, built sand castles, played frisbee, etc. This is our new favorite beach!! read more
