Our dogs were OBSESSED with this spot! The reviews were correct. PLENTY of parking, on both sides of the street. We did come on a Thursday, late afternoon, which may be the reason that there was parking readily available. Not sure if it's still a dog beach BUT we went towards the end...where we saw all of the dogs off leash. I also made sure I didn't see any signs that said that dogs had to be on leash. It was a super windy day so we didn't stay long but our dogs loved every minute of it!

I love this beach, and so does my dog. Please be friendly, and pick up after yourself and your dog if you visit this location. It's beautiful, and it would be great if we all work together to keep it that way! There are no signs stating that this is a dog beach, just a doggie poop bag station at the entrance. There are public stall bathrooms at the top before heading down to the sand. Entrance: There are two ways down, by a large ramp (I believe it used to be a boat launch ramp maybe?), or by stairs. There is also an accessible ramp where the stairs are, for wheelchair users, or anyone that finds stars difficult. The stairs and ramp that are together go in a zig-zag pattern. The other giant ramp visible from the road just goes straight down and it's pretty steep. Accessibility: There is a ramp by the stairs. For wheelchairs or to walk on the ramp I suggest the one where the stairs are, rather than the giant ramp facing the road for anyone with walking difficulties. Perimeter: There are no gates or anything to keep the dogs down at the beach, so if any want to escape they can just run up the stairs or up either ramp onto the road, so it is good to have a solid recall with your dog. However, all the fun is on the sand and water and I have not seen any dogs trying to leave. My dog won't even get in the car to leave, he makes my boyfriend carry his 57lb body into the car. Cleanliness: There is washed up seaweed on the shore pretty often, sometimes in large piles, so I would suggest to just keep your dog away from it. Sometimes there are a lot of little flies/insects when there's a lot of seaweed and it's annoying walking through. I might have inhaled a few. Other than that it's a very clean beach. People: I always greet the owners of the dogs my boy starts to play with, and everyone has always been super friendly. I only witnessed one person with a not so friendly dog during one visit. There are people having picnics, gatherings, or just sunbathing, so that's also when having a good recall comes in handy.

Omg...dog's paradise. Nice beach for dog lovers to stroll with the dogs. Met nice dogs and people too. All dogs were romping off-leash and it was pretty spread out. We loved that parking was easy and free right on the street. The access to the beach is via stairs or a wide cement ramp / driveway. There are doggie poop bags available at the bottom of the driveway.

This is the best dog beach!! My doggo gets soo excited when go here! There are clean public restrooms at the top. A ramp or staircase to use to get down to it. The beach is good size to walk. You can spend an hour or a day. No leash required. ( I carry one just in case it is needed. My dog can run and play till his heart is content!

OH WHAT FUN! Parking along the main road is ample. Large expanses of firm flat sand made running for the doggies easy. The waves came in ripples so no doggies got washed into the ocean ! All the dogs were friendly and sociable. Please DO NOT bring your dog if they are not good around all dogs both big and small as well as kids cause there are plenty of them all. Dog bags available but be sure to bring water and a shady place for your pup to rest.

An absolute perfect find for your dog! This was a stop for my family & two dogs (small & big). From what I can see it's street parking only. Lots of parking (mid Nov.) & not on a very busy street. There are two potties for people lol. There is a bag post down by the beach w baggies in case you forgot yours. It's a very big beach & the day we came it had a fair amount of dogs! I felt very safe with the crowd & the dogs that were there. My smaller dog did well & kept to the smaller dogs. Although, my bigger dog romped with the other bigger dogs & had the time of her life. The owners did hover around & kept a close eye as dogs played. All the owners were very friendly. Do note that when coming down to the beach, dogs will come up to you. My five year old didn't mind but we did have someone walk w her. Bring a water dish!! The dogs play hard & will need water. Not sea water obviously. Please clean up after yourselves & your doggies. Otherwise, clean, beautiful & friendly beach! Let's keep it like that!

Awesome beach! Beautiful stretch of the coast, and so many dogs! What's not to love? This was our dog's first time at the beach and she loved it. There had to have been like 15-20 other dogs there at this time. People were so friendly. Seems like everyone picks up after themselves because we didn't see dog poop anywhere. Love this place, and can't wait to go back.

My pup had the best time at this beach. I recommend this beach to anyone who has a dog! Nicely closed in beach away from the street. I will be back.

Wonderful off-leash dog beach for dogs to run free, enjoy the waves, tennis balls, the sand and sun and each other. It's so much fun to watch them. There are fire rings to enjoy with family and friends. People can have picnics but please don't complain and get mad if dogs get all over your businesses, they are animals and you are in dog beach!

Very small area, far away from town but near something with lots of end of day traffic.

Ask the Community - Fisherman's Beach - Dog Beach

Is there a shower to rinse off after?

Google reviews say dogs are no longer allowed off leash. Is this true?

I just went to A ila dog beach today and had my pup off leash so did many others. No signs

We don't usually take our dog off the leash, but here we did so without hesitation.

Actually, I had never known about Avila Beach until one night, as I was scrolling through instagram, it showed up on my feed. Someone I was following had posted a short reel and I immediately took to how pretty it was. Anyhow, fast forward to just a few days later (and this is the part that seemed 'meant to be'), we were on our way to Pismo for a little weekend trip when I see an exit for Avila Beach just shortly before Pismo. "No way!" I thought .... This whole time it was just right there? And so, as we checked into our hotel in Pismo we quickly diverted our original plan - rather than Pismo it's off to Avila we go. Just a short 10min drive and there we were. Shops, restaurants, the pier .... Just beautiful. I have to say - that little discovery really made our weekend memorable. I don't know what it was but my family and I really enjoyed the afternoon that we'd spent here. There was something for everyone. I had my jolt of much needed caffeine from Kraken coffee (located right off the beach), my daughter got ice cream (husband did as well). The whole afternoon in this little newfound escape was perfect. The beach is beautiful, there are a few shops and eateries that offer both sweet and some savory. It's a lively place to hang out and relaxing enough to bum out too.

We enjoyed this scenic trail, which had multi-million dollar homes to our right, and the beautiful ocean to our left; and a somewhat steep incline up to the dirt parking lot and Cave Landing trailhead. Good thing the weather was perfect and there was a lovely breeze; otherwise I would've stopped walking and demanded to go back to the car. Once we got to the trail, it was a fairly easy short walk to get to the cave. After taking in the stunning views from the cave, we trekked to the cove. Be cautious going down, as it's a steep dirt path and a couple flights of stairs. Also note that clothing is optional, and you may run into people in their birthday suits on this secluded beach.

While visiting SLO, I was looking for an ocean hike to complete and found this hike on All Trails…read moreso I went for it. I took the long way traversing through a million dollar neighborhood of gorgeous homes lining the street. Once I was in the dirt I could see the cove from above. The beach is beautiful and not crowded. Of course, clothing is optional but I didn't come for the beach. I came to see the cove. You have to hike down to the cove as it sits on the water, but no biggie. Hiking back up and out for some may be challenging for some so just go at your own pace. When I arrived there was a guy playing a guitar so that was nice, not too many peeps around which allowed me to take a couple of pics. The cove itself is picturesque but the graffiti sucks!! Why must people have to paint on rocks in nature?? I just don't get it!! Go paint on abandoned buildings etc. I stayed for a few minutes then I walked out on the rocks and took in the views of the mighty Pacific Ocean. So gorgeous! I could have sat there all day. You can also access this cove and beach by driving directly to it and then following the path down to it, but I preferred the mini hike instead. Remember to Leave No Trace always.
