I was looking for a personal trainer to get into shape after recovering from back surgery. The owner Mike carefully listened to me as I went through my history and what I was hoping to gain from these sessions. I was paired with Soroush and having spent the past 7-8 months working with him, I can say I have never seen myself progress like this in my entire life. It's a great facility and with an awesome staff who know what they are talking about and know what they are doing. I was worried about reinjury given my previous operation and therefore wanted someone who was cautious, yet kept pushing me forward. That's exactly what I got. I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of this gym. My biggest gripe is that the trainers are not working for themselves. Mike Everts is the owner and the employer of all the trainers. You interview with Mike -- who is, by the way, a very nice guy -- and then he assigns you to one of the trainers in the gym. It's not the best system because you never really get to interview your trainer and it becomes awkward to ask for someone else since you'll have to see the rejected trainer at each one of your sessions. The other disadvantage of that system is that the FIT trainers tend to be personal trainers as a "side" activity. Some are dancers, others are Yoga instructors, and still others are body builders. It felt like the trainers didn't have their heart in it and that they were there just to make a little extra money. One of the trainers lives in the flat above the studio and he would often come down to the gym groggy and half asleep, practically in his pjs. It just did not inspire. Sorry FIT. You're very nice guys but you need to step up your game and hire a few women as well. read more

I've been working out at FIT for close to a year and can absolutely see and feel the results. I train with Soroush, and it's a great fit -- he stays focused on my goals (strength, mental health) and encourages and pushes me without being a drill sergeant, which would definitely turn me off. He takes a holistic approach, which I really appreciate, and I now realize how valuable it is to have someone who has studied physical fitness (I forget what degree he has!) vs. someone who's just a workout fiend. I have never been a fan of working out and have never exercised on a consistent basis until now. I also hate gyms and find them intimidating, so the space at FIT (there's never more than 1-2 other clients working out at the same time with their trainer), and the individual attention is perfect for me. I feel much more confident - both at the gym and in general. It seemed indulgent at first to use a personal trainer, but it's been worth it. I have a family history of cancer and respiratory disease, and I'm afraid of losing mobility as I get older. So, training at FIT has given me the motivation and self-confidence that I've always lacked to focus on prevention. read more

I've been going for 8 months or so and can definitely tell a difference in my health. I think Mike (owner) says he only hires trainer with at least 5 years of experience and a master's degree, so I don't think you can go wrong (I train with Reggie). I had worked with personal trainers at a couple of the area's larger fitness centers. The trainers I worked with were more like coaches and did not seem to really engage with me to develop a program tailored to my age, physique, and goals. At FIT, the owner Mike Everts, spent significant time interviewing me prior to any training. He wanted to know what I liked and did not like about other training experiences, what my exercise and fitness levels and goals were, etc. He then assigned me to Liz Warner-Osborne. Liz has been fantastic, working with me to meet my goals. She has introduced me to many different types of exercises and approaches, which keeps things from getting boring, and also prevents stagnation. Working with Liz has been one of the best things I have done for myself. The workouts are fun, challenging, and I feel progress after each session. While I never felt very out of shape, I now have better muscle tone and definition, superior balance, and great posture. The physical and mental benefits of exercise are well documented. Liz and FIT enable me to look forward to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and physique. FIT also offers several classes. Mike Evert's abs class is a killer that keeps you coming back for more. His enthusiasm and program are just another benefit of going to FIT. I have observed other trainers at FIT, and have been impressed with their professional approach and how well they engage with their clients. I love this place. Mike and Brad are great personal trainers. For the past 7 years I had a weight goal that I never met on my own and after just two and a half months with them I past my goal by 5lbs. I also lost about 10 to 12% Body Fat. They gave me great advice and a road map for nutrition as well, which really was the most important component for me to be able to lose weight. Brad came up with creative solutions in nutrition that I would not have tried on my own that work specifically for me. In the 4 months I have been training they have pivoted and adjusted training and nutrition program to fit my new goals and objectives. They are the best. I came back to FIT last year with the goal of increasing core strength, flexibility and basic functionality. I had lost a bunch of weight, but I was nearing 50 and knew Mike Everts would get me into a sensible program to meet my goals. I was not looking for a body to show off at the beach; I just wanted a body that worked. I see Simon Abrams twice weekly and have achieved amazing results in just six months. The gym is clean, well-equipped and perfect for guys like me that don't lift weights as a social activity. I love these guys so much. Mike is basically the nicest person you'll ever meet, and even though I've heard this is "The Place" to go for personal training, it's not intimidating at all. It's very personalized, and very chill. All ages, all body types with various fitness/health goals. No hints of snobbishness or social class anything. I am not unathletic, but was not very all-around fit. I like certain activities, but I hate exercise for the sake of exercise, so I have really lazy phases. I did rock climbing for a while, for instance, but probably couldn't have run a mile. I also had a knee injury (patella) that I was worried about, and a general "weak knee" issue that I wanted a trainer to take seriously, without just trying to push me through the pain or something. I went in to talk to Mike about pairing me with someone with a specialty in sports injuries, because of my weird knees. He said that none of his trainers have specialties, because they are all so good that they know everything about everything. He may not have said that exactly, but that was kind of the gist. He pairs people based on personality. So I got started with Melissa, who is fantastic. Serious, but not at all mean or drill-sergeant-like. I wanted to get toned for my wedding, and she figured out immediately what my level was, seemingly for each muscle group or exercise. Even in yoga classes I am sometimes afraid of hurting myself because my patella had subluxated during the injury, and I have to be careful with things like twisting movements. With Melissa, the workouts were seriously intense but I never had that anxiety where I wasn't sure if it might be bad for my body, and it felt so good to be able to push myself without that fear. After some weeks of treadmill warm-ups before the serious stuff, we started going outside for my warm-up cardio. I was having knee pain in the days following, and we stopped doing that because my knees weren't so cool with running on concrete. That didn't stop us from continuing to increase the difficulty of the other exercises, we just changed things around based on what my body needed. To strengthen my quads I did loads of squats and lunges, and to my great surprise, my "normal" knee pain (different from concrete-running knee pain) diminished as my muscles were able to better support my movements. These unexpected benefits were what made it such a great experience. I went in for the wedding dress benefits, but ended up feeling so great that I stopped caring how sculpted my shoulders were or whatever other little things a bride obsesses over. I had wanted to lose some weight, but as my body became more toned I became totally happy with the *same* weight, because I just looked, well, better overall. Melissa gave me an at-home regimen based on my original goals (more cardio to lose those pounds I'd mentioned at first), and it actually became harder to stick to it because I was so comfortable with my progress. (Sorry, Melissa!) I even stopped drinking so much - another completely unexpected benefit. Increased endorphin flows or something. I just felt so good and wanted to take better care of my body, and support my hard work. If I could afford to do this forever, I totally would. I recently logged in 10 years as a continuous client at Fit Personal Training. My entire experience at Fit has been productive and enjoyable. I have been training weekly at Fit since March 2009 and the last 4 years has been with Ryan Scarano. Ryan is consistently organized, prepared and focused throughout our one hour together. His drive, work ethic and good humor are also consistent. Sessions include an appropriate mix of strength and cardio training. I am constantly moving which is a style I prefer. I am especially concerned with avoiding injury as I am over 60 years old and Ryan understands that priority and trains accordingly. Routines are changed frequently and I am never bored. Ryan also texts me routines to use when I am working out alone. I find these very useful! I have been training weekly since 1994 with a personal trainer and I consider Ryan to be one of the best during the past 24 years. Lastly, he is a very fun person to spend an hour with weekly. Fit Personal Training is very professionally managed by owner, Mike Everts. If you are looking for a personal trainer, whatever your fitness goals are, FIT is the best place in town. I've been going there for a while, as have several of my friends. All of the trainers I've gotten to know are intensely focused on their clients and are some of the nicest, friendliest people I know. They really put the "personal" in personal training. Don't let the relatively small space fool you...it's an extremely well equipped gym. I like that the workouts vary each time you go so you don't get in a rut with the same static routine and I like that the trainers are very flexible when it comes to scheduling. I have been going to FIT since November 2017. I was nervous about joining initially because I had not been in a gym for over a year and did not know what to expect. I met with a trainer, Brad, and discussed my goals and expectations. It has now been nearly 5 months, and I am still training several times a week with Brad. The workouts are never boring and always challenging. Brad has worked with me to increase my endurance and gain more strength, mobility, and balance. He tracks my weight, strength, and workouts and is always willing to discuss my progress. Additionally, he has worked with me on finding a diet that fits my lifestyle while meeting my caloric needs. Beyond the actual workouts, this has been a highlight of the services at FIT. I have been able to increase my calories with the proper nutrients to maximize my workouts and progress. Brad always has helpful suggestions and goes beyond to offer a meal plan that has defined calories and macronutrients. The gym itself is clean and everyone has been friendly and helpful. I appreciate that it is a private personal training gym where people simply come to workout at their chosen time then leave. read more

Still at FIT. I really thought I would take a break after training for a bit since I had a lot of travel coming up. Mike provided me with great workouts to do on the road, and I've been back for a few weeks now. Obe thing I can elaborate on more that I probably understated in my previous post is how informative he is. Even in past training experiences where I have done well and liked my trainer, never has there been this much focus on bringing me in on the plan and explaining how the workouts are put together and why. I get more out of the training knowing that there is a reason for everything and what aspect or aspects of fitness we are primarily focussing on in a given workout. Goal setting is also really important to me and understanding how results and progress are compared and measured is a huge plus. I am going to be dropping money here for a while I suppose. read more

I have been going to FIT for 1 and 1/2 years now. It has become an important part of my life. Training with Ariel Osharenko has been a joy. He is endlessly enthusiastic about his clients and with an extensive educational and practical background in physical fitness and strength training you could not be in better hands. His tireless work ethic and constant good mood are something I did not find in other trainers. I have been to the big clubs and worked with their "best" training staff and I now know better. If you can get an appointment with Ariel it will be the best money you have ever spent on your health and well being. I have also trained with Mike Everts, the owner, when Ariel has been on vacation and with his in depth knowledge, education and decade or more of experience his abilities are impressive. I've been going to FIT twice a week since 2006. I started working with Mike Everts after a year in physical therapy for some lower back problems. Mike's expert knowledge of how the human body works has been a life saver. We've built up core strength and reformed most of my muscle mass. I've also lost 70 pounds since my first session. The gym is very laid back and personal. One trainer per customer, no more than a half dozen customers in the place at one time. All the trainers are professionals and have great personalities. Each works with customers to meet and exceed goals -- I've seen a lot of people come in well out of shape and turn into healthy regulars. I love the place and highly recommend it for people who want one-on-one, customized workouts. This isn't a poodle/poseur gym -- it's customized personal training to meet individual needs. After having a subpar experience with a trainer no longer with FIT, the owner Mike Everts contacted me, refunded me my money for the sessions I had purchased and additionally personally trained me for several sessions to make up for the earlier mishap. Mike is extraordinarily accommodating and flexible with timing and fitness plans, able to work with atypical clientele diets - I am a gluten-free vegan, also practice yoga and somewhat biased against gyms. He set me up with a routine practical for my variable travel schedule, went out of his way to analyze my different diet and assessed different imbalances in the body due to injuries. He made it challenging, yet aligned with my values and concerns. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him as a trainer. Mike also keeps it real and also very skilled at what he does from having a broad understanding of human mobility as well as much more than a trainer but a genuinely kind human being. After a long debate with myself, I spoke to the owner, Mike about my physical health concerns, lack of athletic prowess and general fear of going to a gym. He made me feel at ease and invited me to a free consultation session. It was here that I met one of my trainers, Natalie. She was very positive, thorough and genuinely interested in not only my needs but also my feelings. I have several injuries (not from FIT) and she always takes them into account to ensure my comfort level but also that I am strengthening those weak points. Natalie personalizes my workouts and really tracks how I am doing. I can tell this by what I am expected to do at each session. I often tell her, "no way Natalie, I can't do that!" But she is right, she pushes and believes in me when I am afraid to believe in myself. And she is right, I can do it! I also see a second trainer, Ryan, twice a week at FIT. He and Natalie communicate with each other about my progress, strengths, weaknesses and whatever else super qualified trainers discuss! He is very calm and organized and you can just feel that he wants to help you succeed. He understands the importance of balance and mobility and has really helped me to build myself back up. Ryan also offers these "tips" or talking points at each session and sends them on to his clients in an email. He is a self-professed nerd and can explain in detail why and what we are doing and how it will effect daily life. He is always saying, "the more you do, the more you can do" and he is completely right. I've joined gyms in the past but never felt comfortable there and would often go in like gang busters and hurt myself by not knowing the correct form or technique. I've also joined gyms and would just quit and end up paying my monthly fee that ended up being a donation. Here at FIT, I pay as I go and receive an email when I am due to make a new payment. This is a no frills place, it is just downright friendly and serious about making you a better person by reaching your fitness goals, no matter what they might be. The other trainers and clients are encouraging and friendly. There are older clients, younger clients, people working on training for marathons, mobility issues. Just people working at their own personal levels of fitness with differentiated instruction from their trainers. I never thought a gym like this would suit me, but it does. It is not the gym, but the amazing trainers and clients that make this place what it is. If you think you can't join a gym like me, just try the place out and I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised. I know I was and I've been going since May. I actually miss going when I have a scheduling conflict. Me, the supreme hater of sweat and exercise, MISSES exercise! I feel better, look better and have more energy. I've always heard it is a "lifestyle" change that is needed and Mike, Natalie and Ryan have helped flip that switch in my brain, I'm a believer. I bought a Groupon type deal for 2 personal training sessions at this gym. The first session was awful. I was alone at the gym with the trainer and he was entirely inappropriate and unprofessional. I considered leaving mid-session multiple times. He made comments about my body that made me uncomfortable and also mentioned that if he was younger he would like to date me. Then, when I called for my second appointment I gave 3 days that I would be free for the following week. Well, today is Friday of the following week and they never called me back. read more

How do I give zero stars? This place and it's "trainers" are a joke. I had a quite difficult time trying to get an in home consultation. I have a gym in my building and wanted someone to help me use the equipment properly. I do not need to lose weight, I am 6'3 and 175, I would like to tone a bit for summer but this full priced package with the owner, which contained multiple sessions kept being pushed on me. I never even got to meet with anyone because I wouldn't pay upfront for a package I didn't need. Unhelpful and more focused on my money than my need for physical fitness. I would avoid unless u have the need to overpay for nothing. Maybe the extra money could go towards buying the owner some manners and possibly a qualified staff? read more

I've been going to FIT for personal training once a week for the last couple of years. What do I like about the place? First and foremost, my trainer, Evan. When I arrive, he is prepared -- in other words, no hemming and hawing about what the day's activities should include. But, he's also flexible enough to alter what he's planned for the day to help me with specific issues I'm having. He is extremely knowledgeable and loves sharing his knowledge. Since I'm a person who likes to know the why of things, this is perfect for me. And, Evan knows how both to push and encourage; as a result, I've been able to do things I would never have done on my own. Mike Everts, the owner of FIT, has also been great to work with. I've used trainers at other facilities that require that a specific number of training sessions be completed in a given amount of time. Since I travel a lot, that does not work for me. Mike has been completely understanding of my sometimes bizarre schedule. It can take me months and months to complete the 30-session package I buy, and I never get any pressure to speed up the process. With all this praise, why 4 stars and not 5? Maybe I'm just a tough grader, but to me 5 stars means perfect and, as others have mentioned, FIT is pretty minimalist. The bottom line, however, is that I'm extremely satisfied with my experience at FIT and would not even consider taking my business elsewhere. read more

This is the first place that I have felt compelled to update my review twice. FIT continues to impress me as the most professionally run businesses in DC. When I work out with a trainer, I don't want loud music blaring and dozens of people around. I don't want to waste 10 minutes of an hour long session doing cardio, which I could . do myself before or after a session. At FIT my trainer Steve Swank is superb. He has worked me through several minor injuries (that I have received elsewhere), knowing exactly what exercises that I need to do to get me back on track. The owner, Mike Everts, checks in with me on a regular basis to ensure I am meeting my fitness goals. One review on here from a bitter sounding woman mentions that there are several out of shape people that she has seen at FIT. THAT is why I love FIT. They work with people at all levels of fitness and help them improve. Today's out of shape client is tomorrow's FIT, happy and healthy client. I was surprised by the one very harsh negative review posted here, which doesn't reflect in any way my own extremely positive experience with FIT, my trainer Mark, or owner Mike Everts. Contrary to that reviewer's comments, most people I've encountered at this gym are not at all in bad shape, but are instead looking for an individually-tailored unique personal training experience. My trainer Mark is nothing short of exceptional at what he does, coming up with creative new exercises each week to meet my own specific fitness goals. In barely 3 months, I've somehow managed to lose *12 pounds* using his regimen, while actually gaining noticeable muscle, both in absolute terms and relative to my BMI. (Moreover, I was an active and regular gym goer when I started training with Mark, so this is not a "Jared from Subway" story here.) Even still belong to another well-known larger gym where I continue to work out, I can honestly say I've had better results in my short time with Mark than with any other trainer or anywhere else I've ever gone. read more

I trained at FIT for over two years, primarily with Zach and once in a while with David. Both are great trainers, though with different styles. I started at FIT after returning to DC after an extended period abroad during which time I got really out of my fitness routine. I needed something to kick start things again. Zach was great. He came up with interesting and effective routines that were challenging, but not impossible. He was great at motivating me to try new exercises and to push myself. He, and the other trainers, were also extremely approachable and personable and the time seemed to fly during the sessions. I have worked with trainers at other gyms and found FIT to be a much more professional and higher level training gym. The trainers there really know their stuff and take their profession very seriously. I only recently stopped going because I moved away. I really miss FIT! I would highly recommend it. read more
