Because words hurt, because I am already so vulnerable and frightened to cross the threshold of the gym, I need support, not otherwise. SweatBox is all welcoming, all inclusive type of place. Yes, they are located inside an exact copy of the Globo Gym from Dodgeball, (I got jokes) but just walk to the back of the first floor, to the Sweatbox counter, as far as I understand, gym and them are two separate entities. I purchased a 7-day, $34.00 unlimited trial pass online, came 30 minutes early for the instruction session (important to come early, instructors won't say no to you if you show up 5 minutes prior to class, but ultimately you are shorthanding yourself on the instruction part - don't you want to know as much as you can about bike set up, and components of training? And remember that instructors have other student s  to take care of prior to class) I began my training on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019 and I made sure to come every day, dragging my self in sometimes, even if my body screamed to go get nachos instead. The instructors I've experienced during the trial week were: Alexx G Shawn M Kevin D Ashley D I loved all the instructors, Alexx is all tough love, just as described in his bio, but I love his light show and music choices. Kevin has an amazing aura and energy and makes you feel included. Then comes Ashley, wow. I don't know if she somehow hypnotizes the class, but you get in the zone, stop thinking of outside world, and all you focus on is her voice, her example poses, and her corrections, nothing else. At the end of the class, when you finally come to, you realize that you worked out for a full hour and  never looked at the clock once! Shawn is a rare soul. I have my collection of special, big hearted people, the list is short, but Shawn is on it. First of all the energy during his classes is through the roof, he is so charismatic, you WANT to do good to show him your appreciation. But my experience with him is also more personal. When I felt embarrassed, questioned myself, felt weak, cried like a baby after second class, Shawn in the gentlest of ways supported me, was there for me, helped me get past those hurdles and I cannot be more thankful. He always has words of encouragement, listens with attention, he is present. What an amazing human being. To sum up - 15 lbs. down (results will vary of course) and I signed up for an unlimited monthly. They got me good.

Combined with the music and the trainer giving you encouragement, spinning can be a really good cardio workout. It almost feels competitive with all the numbers and colors on the TV screens too. However, I don't understand the hype with $20-40 spin classes when I can do the same workout at the gym and push myself just as hard. I suppose it's worth it if you need that extra push, but I can't really afford $20-40 per class when i can get a membership at the gym for $30 a month. This was more of a hybrid spin/core class that utilizes TRX trainers, so there's that. And they do provide you with a heart rate monitor strap that gauges how hard you're working and calculate what intensity you should be at based on your endurance. The class itself was a 1:1 that introduced everyone to how a real class would go. We learned the basic movements on the TRX trainers and then were taught how to use the bikes. But it felt really rushed. The trainer was speaking so fast, I couldn't even really understand half of what he was saying. All in all, i got a good workout in though and I enjoyed the cold scented towel at the end.

They have plenty of cardio machines with two stairmasters, quite a bit of treadmills, and several elliptical machines. I usually always get access to a squat rack as they have five racks. They do a lot of classes here, including Pilates, yoga, cycling, HIIT, etc. I haven't been able to attend one yet but from what I have seen, they look good. The price is a little steep, but I love that this gym isn't always fully packed. It's small but mighty. My favorite touch is that they offer a minty cold wet towel for you to cool off with and have a coffee machine if you need a little boost after your workout.

This also makes me feel less self-conscious because there aren't a ton of people around, and if there are half of them are from out of town and I will never see them again anyway! I have started doing personal training with Emanuel and after two sessions am confident that this man is going to whip me into shape! He really knows his stuff and I feel like he is genuinely interested in helping me reach my goals. I haven't taken any of the group classes yet. There are not very many to choose from, so if that is what you are mostly interested in, this probably wouldn't be the gym for you. I am looking forward to the pool opening next week -- I really like the fact that it is also the hotel pool, which means you can order food and drink poolside! On Friday nights supposedly they set up a walk-up bar, which sounds fun to me, too. :-) I have a feeling we are in for a super hot summer and I love that I will have a private pool just four blocks away. As a member, I also have access to a huge grassy area for laying out, picnicking, reading, etc. It would be a great place to watch the fireworks. Even simple questions, like whether they have towels, are met with a dismissive "I wasn't here yesterday." The front desk staff is either absent or completely unhelpful. The management lacks basic training in simple tasks like updating my credit card. I've spoken to management more than once in the past 90+ days. I was given their email to help with communication. Not surprisingly, the disappointing customer service begins at the top. Two weeks later, I still haven't received a response. Lifeguards appear inconsistent in enforcing rules. Some are so diligent that they engage in heated arguments with guests when their children splash or require an infant flotation device, while others are too preoccupied with sunbathing and playing on their phones to care.

I've tried out a lot of different classes and bootcamps over the last 2 years in DC and this is, by…read morefar, my favorite. Terrence's boxing bootcamp is exactly what I was looking for. It's a high adrenaline workout that varies every time you go, and you feel like you're getting a solid workout in, while still learning a lot about boxing and the right technique. The bootcamp is usually between 45mins-1hour of cardio, some weights, boxing, etc. It's pretty much circuit training and we rotate on 2 minute cycles. We go through them all about 2, sometimes 3, times and have group stuff like abs or burpees at the end, if there is time. I've really enjoyed the one-on-one time we get with Terrence with our gloves on. I've been going for about a month (2-3 times a week) and feel like I've learned a lot so far. You also learn a great deal just from listening at your circuit when he's working with someone else on the gloves. Terrence is great - he remembers everyone and knows the different levels they are at, so he adjusts to their skill level. You definitely sense you are improving from week to week. They are small classes of 3-8 people so there's a nice sense of camaraderie in the small groups. I definitely recommend this to someone who is looking to change up their workout routine with a different style of bootcamp, learn about boxing, and sweat their ass off. It's the first bootcamp I actually look forward to going to each week.

You come in at specific times to work with your trainer doing specific lifts; the focus is on lifting rather than cardio. I wasn't sure about the approach as my primary goal was fat loss, but it has both been successful and gives a great return on investment of time. The gym itself is better equipped than any facility I have seen, and the UP app is been helpful in tracking nutrition and workouts. But I think their trainers are the key. I started working with Zach last summer, and have been very happy with the results. I've lost over 30 pounds and have never been stronger. He is a great resource regarding technique in lifting and motivation during sessions, but also makes them enjoyable. Zach developed and adapted workouts and nutrition throughout, modifying to help me continue making progress, and helped me understand nutrition (which I thought I did before, but didn't). The program at UP worked better for me than anything else ever has, which I find remarkable as I am in my 50's with a busy life including job, family, and travel.

They and my RtB classmates were super welcoming, supportive, and encouraging. Programming-wise, RtB is similar to CrossFit. Every workout starts with a warm-up that is related to the day's main workout. The main workout is usually a compound lift plus conditioning/accessory work, intense conditioning work, or some kind of running/sprinting. The coaches make sure to work with your level--what they ask you to do is adjusted for whether you have been doing heavy back squats for years or can't squat to parallel, whether you can do five unassisted pull-ups in a row or are working up to assisted pull-ups through inverted rows. They also happily work around whatever injury you may have, coming up with alternative exercises that avoid stressing the injury. And they keep track of your progressions on various exercises and recommend how much weight to lift/how deep to move, so you don't have to guess what you should be doing. They can do this because class sizes are capped at around 8 people. It's as much attention as you might want from a one-on-one personal trainer, but much, much more affordable if you work out frequently. In the three months that I had the pleasure of attending RtB, I did an unassisted pull-up for the first time in my life and vastly improved my form for both Olympic lifts (with which I had little prior experience) and powerlifting lifts (with which I had years of prior experience). I was having trouble progressing beyond intermediate strength standards because my form was off, and RtB has so noticeably improved my form that I look forward to seeing what I can do in the upcoming year.
