This Whole Foods is in a convenient Park Ridge location but we've never been much of a patron and…read morehave generally found them to be pricier than we like for groceries.  However, I came in on this day to try their Friday promo of 12 raw oysters for $12.  You do need to have an Amazon Prime account to get the deal.  I heard about this deal from a neighbor pal who is a big fan and oyster lover.   I would say it was an ok deal, and I'm going with 3.49 stars, as the oysters are all on the smallish side.  They're regularly priced at $1.99 apiece, and for comparison if you have them say at Shaw's, they go for $4 apiece there fyi.  You can't really enjoy them in their dining space though unless you want to buy lemons and/or cocktail sauce, as none is provided, so we did a carryout which is apparently the most common approach.  Carryout is fine as they are iced and as long as you eat them within 2 hours.  They had 3 types of oysters and they are the typical offerings year round we were told - Atlantic Blue Point, Rappahannock Atlantic, and Atlantic Wellfleet.  I queried a bit with Terry, one of the two seafood staffers on duty, and he told me Blue Points were the most popular and Rappahannocks were the biggest.  I don't know anything about the multitude of oyster varieties, but I do like the idea of getting the biggest for the buck as they all taste pretty much the same to me.  I also noticed they were only about 1/4 to 1/3 the size of the big oysters we get in a Chinatown restaurant(!), duh, but that's an aside.  Anyway we ordered 6 Blue Points and 6 Rappahannocks.  They made for a nice lunch side at home and a nice little foodie treat.  The two varieties tasted very similar but the Rappahannocks might have been a little fishier tasting.  Kyle was the staffer who did the shucking (and Terry said he was the best shucker in all of Park Ridge!), and he indeed did a masterful and excellent job as you couldn't even tell they were shucked as the shells were carefully reassembled so beautifully.  I actually raised my rating by 1/2 star just because of Kyle's fine work ha.  It was all fun, but probably still a one and done on the promo unless I find out they are going to bigger oyster varieties some day!

There is only one place where you can enter this store, and even when I was here around 5pm on a Thursday this created a backup. To add insult to injury the doors are enter or exit only doors (though I can't remember if there's a barrier between them--so maybe you can fudge it). Other than that, standard Whole Foods. They have an Amazon return counter on the side opposite of the entrance (since that's the least convenient place they could have put it for people making returns, I can only assume it was by design and they're hoping that people will do some shopping whilst they're in there). At that end there is a single exit-only door right by the Amazon counter, so you can avoid temptation by leaving there.

I had no idea Larrabee Herbs existed until I found it via Google Maps. I wondered about parking prior to visiting, as the storefront sits along W North Ave, but it ended up not being an issue. There is a small parking lot right outside the building on N 76th Ct, with a decent number of spots for the number of customers they get. Keep in mind that parking is also available along W North Ave if those spots are ever filled. After entering, I immediately started looking for the products I needed while an employee helped another customer at the register. Once he finished, he immediately asked me if I needed any assistance, and of course, I took him up on it. The employee was very informative about which products were available, as well as when the items I was looking for would arrive, as they were in high demand. All the items were displayed in alphabetical order, making it easy to find what I needed. I ended up purchasing 1-ounce bags of kola nut, licorice root, black walnut leaf, and cloves, since my original target products were not available. I really loved everything I discovered about what I purchased. All of them have wonderful results in combating bacteria in the stomach, and I hope to incorporate a few of them regularly into my dietary routine. As for kola nuts, I learned that they are caffeine-rich seeds from the African cola tree that are used to boost energy, enhance metabolism, and aid digestion. Containing around 2% caffeine, they act as a central nervous system stimulant, reducing fatigue and boosting mental alertness. Licorice root helps eradicate bacteria, especially alongside medical treatments. It inhibits bacterial growth, soothes inflamed tissues, and boosts protective stomach mucus. Other benefits include contributing to healthy skin and relieving colds and coughs. Black walnut contains compounds--particularly juglone in the hulls--that exhibit antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic properties. Studies also show that regular consumption reduces inflammation and inhibits associated gastric damage, making it a promising nutritional approach. Lastly, cloves! Out of all the herbs I found, the cloves made me smile because they do wonders for the body that I had no idea about. It was the first of the herbs I had with dinner, and I really loved the smell of it. The taste sent chills through my body as I heated a small portion to drink for the evening. Cloves also inhibit bacterial growth and reduce the inflammation it causes in the stomach. I am very pleased to say that Larrabee Herbs and Health Center has played a key role in helping me take better control of my health. I will surely visit again, whether for these exact herbs or others. ~ Live. Laugh. Love. ~ Thomas G

YE OLDE SUPPLEMENT STORE…read more Everybody knows this place stocks healthy stuff like B-12 pills and whey powders, so why the antediluvian spelling?? Whatever. Sometimes you need an energy boost, metabolism kickstarter, or just a miscellaneous pick-me-up and Vitamin Shoppe has you covered. The sales people are friendly and helpful (if perhaps a tiny bit pushy) and pointed me in the right direction for what I sought. They carried bottles of Korean red ginseng (my alternative to a can of diet Coke) as well as a Red Bull-esque canned drink that didn't suck. Prices are reasonable -- I think? -- and upon checkout I was given a free energy bar with my purchase, so yay! Selection of products appeared vast, so if they don't carry the exact item you're looking for, odds are good that sh*t doesn't exist. Vitamin Shoppe, you're not fooling anyone with your goofy old English name. C'mon now. Just smile and sell your protein shakes :)
