When my parents came to visit recently, we stopped by Emerhoff's Footwear to get me a new pair of sneakers (mine had holes in the heels) and also to find a solid pair of shoes for my upcoming internship. The service was amazing--from the wide selection and quality brands to the genuinely helpful staff. I was able to try on a bunch of different sneakers until I found the right pair. Then, when it came to the work shoes, they helped me test out insoles and different fits until we found something that worked perfectly. A special shoutout to Chloe--she went above and beyond. They ordered the work shoes in for me, and instead of making me pay a ridiculous shipping fee to get them to my dorm, Chloe personally delivered them. Amazing service and knowledge of their customer base, I am proud to say that they value quality and service in high regard. Huge thanks to both Chloe and the store owner for the top-notch service, not just during the purchase, but all the way through until the shoes were in my hands. I HIGHLY recommend Emerhoff's if you're in Ames or anywhere nearby. You won't be disappointed.

Staff members Amanda and Michael were so impressive, knowledgeable, and friendly. I love their huge selection of shoes, and their pricing is superb. Given that it's a retail store, you would think they would have a professional attitude, or at least act like they are ready to help customers when they walk in. I have been there 4 or 5 times, and every time (including one time when I called the store) the staff seemed like they would rather be out on a smoke break. A couple times they were flat out rude. If it was always the same person helping me I would think maybe it was just that one person who was the problem. I have been helped by several different people, though, and it's always the same. This most recent experience was the last time I visit Brown's. If you need shoes, I recommend Emerhoff's. The people there are helpful and polite, they have a good selection for a town as small as Ames, and the prices are decent. There is also a Shoe Carnival that opened in Ames recently. They don't have as many higher quality shoes as Emerhoff's, but they have a lot to choose from and they offer good discounts.

It has a good selection of stores, and a place with rolled ice cream (intriguing, but sadly I didn't have the time to try it out). The restrooms were nice and clean. About the only strange thing was the kids play area, it was filled with young guys - mid to late teens, and about 8-10 of them. They seemed to be hanging out in there, and when we came near, they made no attempt to move. I hadn't planned to use the play area unless it was amazing (with a good slide, etc), but since it wasn't I wasn't too disappointed, but it was strange and there was really no room for anyone to go in and play with their children.
