Upgraded to 5 stars. After all, it's the results that matter. And it's working.

The cost is $260 for 1 month which is not cheap but also not like, Equinox prices for personal training. Will likely continue in the summer/fall 2022 if they have the space. Parking is a little tough if you do not have a Somerville Permit (need to find a meter in the AM or just hope you do not get towed in front of the Car Wash place). Overall a great spot in the Cambridge/Somerville area. Reminds me of Ethos in the South End.

I'm updating this review since it's been a year and I'm still getting to the TR at least once a…read moreweek. My favorite class is the Thursday 6am spin class. Derek and Regan are my favorite instructors for different reasons. Derek is great at creating a class that mimics an outdoor ride. Whether we're modeling our workout after part of the Tour de France or just taking on a series of hills, I always feel like I left with a great workout. Regan always choose fun, upbeat music that helps you to power through her drills. I feel like sometimes a class can be repetitive, but the music and her attitude make the class go by pretty quickly. I also recently tried a Wednesday 6am bootcamp class that meets outside at Conway park. I'd never worked with the two instructors (with Sean + another instructor who I hadn't met before). I normally DESPISE bootcamps, and it can suck being the new person to a group. But the instructors had great attitudes, were really funny, and made the class enjoyable by changing up our activities frequently. It involved a lot of partner work, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. AND--I felt twinges in my abs from all the planking for at least a week afterward. (Which means I should probably do this class more often.) The only downside to these classes is that I would really love another 6am spin class (although obviously not possible if the indoor space is already in use). I feel like a lot of people would do a Friday AM spin class if it were offered. I'm giving 4 stars mostly because I've only found the 6am spin class to be the one class that I really consistently attend, but the Training Room is an awesome place to take classes if you want a low stress, low-commitment trial with a new activity.

However since it is closer to the city, it's small and has limited amenities. They offer a variety of classes, but their gym space is very crowded. I found their spin and yoga classes comparable to boutique club classes. Their other cardio/lifting classes are better suited for beginners. Their staff is very friendly and they have some tables to work. The only thing outside the small space is that it gets VERY crowded. Which means you're waiting on equipment, the bathrooms get dirty quickly and hard to find locker space. They only have a tiny sauna in the change room which is always full during prime hours. I would not pay a hefty membership fee for just this location.

Unfortunately, that completely changed after taking a class with the instructor, Alexander Liviner. From the beginning, his attitude came across as arrogant and superior -- exactly the opposite of what I was hoping for. At one point, he made fun of me for being slow. It was completely unnecessary. If he was trying to be funny, it wasn't funny at all. It felt humiliating rather than motivating. I also got a little confused with the weights and accidentally grabbed the wrong one. Instead of guiding me or correcting me in a professional way, he made a facial expression that made me feel like I was stupid. A coach's role is to support and teach -- not to mock or belittle someone who is trying. It also felt like he clearly favored more advanced participants, giving them more attention while others were left feeling invisible. I left the class embarrassed, disappointed, and honestly regretting that I took it. It was a horrible experience. Lifetime should choose instructors who lead with encouragement and professionalism -- not arrogance or favoritism.

A few weeks ago I complained yelp style about the epic wait/disorganization (who wants to wait 3…read moremonths to start PT?) of the scheduling staff. This is still true and will likely still be true for me (and you) in the future. But I wanted to update about the quality of treatment because it stands out. I've been getting PT for chronic pain for the past year and a half and have worked with 5 physical therapists at different practices. 4 out of the 5 didn't seem to know what they were doing with me and I got hurt pretty badly. Sometimes more than once if I stuck with that person because I thought that's how PT worked. The only PT who seem to know what they were doing was private pay ($$) so I didn't have the highest hopes for this program. But after my first day of finally starting with a PT/OT regimen I realized they really understand chronic pain. Which is great, because literally everyone I have worked with so far hasn't. I love that they have OT here, no other chronic pain program I have been to or looked into has it, because they teach you how to properly do things so you can protect your body. They also build in biofeedback, stress management, coping, and CBT. Holy comprehensive. So if you've started going to a pain clinic and found that it doesn't seem like the best fit, get a first appointment here (2 months + out) then expect your PT/OT eval 3-4 weeks later, and first appointments 2 weeks later. If they recommend the weekly group program the wait may be longer. Stick with your crappy pain clinic until you can finally get in here and I think you'll be glad you put up with waiting like I did.

I was a patient at Spaulding Medford about 5 years ago. Ostensibly, it was a rehab program. I was…read moreso excited to do PT, OT, etc. Instead what we patients received was gaslighting and cruelty. I was not there for pain, as my condition does not cause me to experience pain, I was there for physical rehab. Depsite that, I was told every day I was focused on the pain (what pain?!) and that it was "all in my head"-- despite the fact that I have a serious, progressive neurological condition. I asked OT to teach me ways to do chores and errands with my conditions limitations. Instead, she made me do Tai Chi in my chair for every session twice a week for 3 months. I learned nothing. They not only didnt help me physically, but the damage they did to my psyche is permanent. 5 years later, I still regularly think about what they did amd said to us patients. Their social worker was especially horrific, and should never be allowed to be work with patients. Some of the things she said to me will never leave my brain. As soon as I left the program, I got myself into a *real* PT/OT program at MGH and it made a huge difference, especially as I received all the medical and mental support one needs during a major recovery. The regular Spaulding programs are fantastic. The medford clinic pain and rehab program should be avoided and shut down. Many such clinics across the country are being shut down (such as Philly CHOP's,which this is based off of) as more and more evidence comes out about how these programs' approaches irreparably harm patients. Please avoid this place and find a regular OT/PT office. This is not the place to go to heal.

I like that they do a mix of resistance, cardio and hybrid workouts. They typically have a little bit of everything in each day. This is more cross training based so expect to lift light and fast. The crew that comes here is pretty hard core and they have a wide offering of classes- as early as 5am (!) for the first class of the day. I loved their music, too (straight hip hop generally and no techno like other F45 locations). The parking situation is pretty good and there is a really good nail salon right next door for those wanting to hit a gel mani right after the class. I was highly impressed with the motivation and instruction this class gave me. I had a baby within the year and after 7 straight days of this class I felt like I legit dropped the 10 pounds I had left to lose. This is the perfect work out for mothers - 45 mins in and out and Saturday you can treat yo'self to that 60 min work out. I am attaching a pic here- I've gotten more and more fit the more I go. I did have to join the Somerville Location b/c it was closer to where I live in Cambridge, but I really loved the Medford spot. If not for the traffic I prob would have joined here.
