I've noticed consistent progress in my strength, body awareness, and overall fitness. I have a history of ankle sprains which used to make me nervous about working out, but Keely completely takes that anxiety away. She creates a safe, supportive environment where I can focus on getting stronger without worrying about re-injury. She also has an incredible ability to identify the root of any soreness or discomfort I might be feeling and recommend targeted exercises or stretches that actually make a difference. It's like magic. Except it's not. It's Keely's skills, expertise, and depth of knowledge. Relatedly, Keely is passionate about educating her clients on how their bodies work. I understand things are rough in Oakland and downtown with many vacant offices and apartments (less people) but, I must have a gym that I can get to without rushing to after finishing work at 6:30 PM and that has later PM weekend hours. I am unhappy as management would rather see someone cancel who uses the space 1 - 2 days max per week instead of leaving their dues as they were vs. any increase considering the place was usually nearly empty when I did go those 1 - 2 days per week. I was a member for 10 + years before Covid and when the gym was Club One. Current management/ownership should also take members membership history into consideration when they decide to increase dues in today's financial climate amongst cutting hours, classes, and closing the wet sauna. BOTTOM LINE - if you want a GREAT GYM in Oakland, The Club at City Center is the best overall gym for sure.

The locker rooms are gross, a lot of the equipment is outdated, apparently there's a jacuzzi that's been out of order since covid and the only thing this gym really had going for it was the basketball court. I first came here back in 2022, then again in 2026, and the difference is night and day. In 2022 the place was packed. Fast forward to 2026 and it looks abandoned. Either people got priced out, or everyone found a better gym. The funniest part is how they handled their guest pass policy. When my dad signed up, he was told he could send guests even if he wasn't physically there. I had already used the guest pass once before while I was finishing college, and they took all my information down. Ever since then they've absolutely spammed me with texts and emails trying to sell me a membership, even after I told them I didn't live in the area. It was way harder than it should've been to stop the marketing, which honestly doesn't inspire much confidence if you ever wanted to cancel a membership. I recently moved back and figured I'd use my second guest visit. I walked over for a leg day because they have one machine I actually like. The woman at the front desk asked for my dad's information and then asked if I could call him to confirm I had permission to use the guest pass. I explained he was currently out of the country. She disappeared into the back for a few minutes, came back, and suddenly said, "Actually we've changed the guest policy, so even if your dad called, we still couldn't let you in." ...Wait, what? You literally just asked me to call him. So I asked when the policy changed, and she said, "Maybe about a week ago." The whole interaction was awkward and honestly didn't sit right with me. Maybe it really was a brand-new policy, maybe it wasn't. Either way, asking me to call my dad for approval and then immediately telling me his approval doesn't matter makes absolutely no sense. The irony is they spent months blowing up my phone trying to convince me to buy a membership, but the second I tried to legitimately use the guest benefit that came with the membership my dad already pays for, suddenly I couldn't get through the front door. If you're spending over $170 a month, there are far better options. The YMCA down the street has a better value, and if you're willing to spend a little more, Equinox offers amenities that this place isn't even close to matching. This gym feels like it's circling the drain. Poor management, inconsistent policies, dirty facilities, and prices that make absolutely no sense. Save yourself the headache and spend your money somewhere that actually values its members.

I canceled my membership immediately after the transition and requested that my membership end with my current billing cycle. Instead, I was told I would be charged for an additional month because of the 30-day cancellation policy, despite the fact that the studio I originally joined no longer exists. I found the lack of flexibility extremely disappointing. This was not a typical cancellation, it resulted from Orangetheory closing my home studio. I have not used my membership since the Emeryville location closed, yet I was still expected to pay for another month at a different location. Alex unwilling to make what I believe would have been a reasonable customer service exception. As a result, I cannot recommend this location based on how this transition was handled.

Gyms were closed, I was tired all the time, and honestly my nutrition went to crap. I gained A LOT of weight. At one point in my life I was very close to competing in a show but that didn't happen at that point. It's always been something I've wanted to do. Once I got back in the gym and dialed in the nutrition I lost a lot of weights and gained back my muscle. I knew I still had a lot of work ahead of me and I would do better if I had a coach. I looked at several coaches, local and remote. After I had a consultation call with coach, I knew he was the right coach for me. A key factor of whether you will stick with an exercise program is the having a frictionless environment. Truve has validated parking at the Hive so you do not have to be driving around in circles trying to figure out where you can park safely and get into the class on time. When you walk in through the front doors, the vibe is very chill so you do not feel anxious walking into class. Most importantly, the other people working in the gym are extremely supportive and will become your community quickly. Having all these things in place makes a fitness routine so much easier to establish. There are even free community classes if that's how you prefer to give this place a try. The instructors are excellent. Classes are capped at 10 for general fitness classes, and three for Pilates. As a result, their instructors can give you abundant corrections and attention so you avoid injuries and develop great form. If you are worried that you don't know how to use a Pilates Reformer, you can hire a private trainer for three classes to learn the ropes like I did. This is the premier gym in Oakland for rehabilitation from injuries. I am a 7 year cancer survivor who has had numerous surgeries. Each time, I've had to fight back to regain my health, strength and flexibility. My last surgery was major, set me back the farthest, and happened during the height of the pandemic; recovery felt close to impossible until I walked through these doors. Not only have I converted fat into muscle, lost weight, gotten so much stronger and gained so much range of motion over 5 months, but I can keep trying new things like TRX Bootcamp that turned out to be fun. Truve's got a wide range of things you can try to keep from being bored. Week after week, month after month, customers report that machine are broken. Management does nothing to fix them. It's not just the big things like a machine being completely inoperable. It's also the small things , like displays on an entire set of leg machines are broken. I rate many other aspects of the gym highly. But this is inexcusable. You're taking our membership money - treat us with respect and repair your machines!
