Ruff House Rescue - Does it get any better?

    Ruff House Rescue

Ruff House Rescue is a very caring group of dedicated animal lovers who open their homes and hearts…read moreto abandon animals showing them the love and compassion they so desperately need. Anyone who is looking to make the world a little better can do so by rescuing one of the pups that RHR fosters. Saving animals is not easy for those who volunteer but is worth every minute when they can connect a needy pup with their forever home. Earlier this year we wanted to help out and adopt a pup that needed a home. So we filled out the RHR application and then went through an extensive phone and home video interview and inspection. Everyone involved in the vetting process was very professional. We were impressed at how detailed they were to make sure that if we were approved our home would be safe and welcoming to one of their charges. If every rescue did what RHR does there is no doubt in our minds that every dog placed would end up in great forever homes. Originally, we were interested in a dachshund/poodle mix but had to pass on her because we were not feeling well to bring her home. A few weeks later we went to a RHR foster home to meet a few potential pups. Our original intention was to adopt a similar pup to the one we had to pass on and decided to trial foster a totally different pup who is a chihuahua/rat terrier mix from Korea who was very shy and not very interested in us. From the moment we adopted Ozzy we kept in contact with RHR via multiple texts, photos and videos to keep everyone in the loop as he slowly came out of his shell. It took a few weeks for Ozzy to want to fully explore our home and fenced in yard. Then a few more weeks until he found his voice and proved to us, yes he can bark, especially when we were, in his mind, taking a bit too long to cook his eggs for breakfast. Now a few months later he is part of the family, enjoying playing with his brothers and sisters, keeping up with them and showing that he is truly one of the gang. So if you want to help a pup in need and support the gallant efforts of the RHR organization we would highly recommend that you do so. As a former board member of an Animal Rescue in Massachusetts I can say that this organization truly deserves the support of any animal lover who wants to make a difference by adopting one of their wonderful pups.

I am very disappointed with my experience with Ruff House Rescue…read more I adopted a Great Dane puppy and had concerns about having her spayed at only 17 weeks old due to her young age and giant breed size. My veterinarian advised that spaying her this young was not safe and strongly recommended waiting until she was older. When I brought these concerns to the rescue, I was met with rude, dismissive, and intimidating responses. Rather than having a respectful discussion about my veterinarian's recommendations, I was repeatedly told I would be in breach of contract and would never have licensure of my puppy if I did not follow their timeline. The emails I received were hostile and unprofessional, especially considering I was simply trying to advocate for my puppy's health. I understand rescues have policies, but there should be room for reasonable consideration when a licensed veterinarian raises concerns. The way I was treated left me feeling disrespected and unsupported. I have adopted many puppies and animals from other rescues in the past and have never had an experience remotely close to this. I would encourage anyone considering adopting from this rescue to carefully review their requirements and be aware of how medical concerns and adoption procedures may be handled.

I debated on what rating to give this shelter it's probably more about 3 1/2 stars. To start one of…read morethe employees there George was awesome!!!! He alone is why I would give 5 stars!!! So glad most of our interactions were with him. He's great and informative! To start for a shelter I expected to be dirty and smelly it wasn't. The staff takes care of this place! After losing our old man 7/11/18 it's been one year since we lost him, we decided to stop by the shelter and fell in love with a lab named Lily. Her backstory is her old owner was moving into a new place and could not bring her. Since it was just day 2 there for her she was scared and nervous so it took some time to get her tested for food aggression, spayed and reactions around cats. We have two so it would've played a factor in the adoption process. The adoption process was more than I expected but that's okay. We had to provide a mortgage bill to prove we owned our home and if you rent you have to provide a letter notarized stating you are allowed to have a dog, provide access to your vet to ensure your current and precious animals were up to date on vaccines. This process of testing and application took about 2 weeks. The wait longer than expected but understandable. We would visit her often and unfortunately they are short staffed so sometimes we waited 5 mins other times over 40mins. One thing that was pretty disappointing was this one time there were 3 people ahead of us and 2 behind us waiting on line. This one guy who was number 5 on the line made a call while we were there and got bumped to number one on the list. Understandably at that point plenty were upset as we waited upwards of 40mins. Besides that one incident I generally had a great experience with the staff members. Just remember to be patient as sometimes you have to wait a bit but it's not their fault except for that one incident.

This review does not reflect the dogs what-so-ever, so please come visit this shelter to adopt and give these dogs a forever home/family. The sheer number of dogs that this facility has is massive and they have so many dogs to choose from big and small / young and old. We met a few dogs that we absolutely loved, but at the end of the day we ended up adopting another dog in need from another shelter because we felt the staff was a little difficult to deal with. When meeting the dogs, the staff seemed to hinder on the negatives of each dog instead of seeing how happy we were during the meet and greets. I understand they like to warn potential adopters of all possible negatives, but we felt like these employees weren't even "dog-people". Additionally, we noticed after visiting twice that many of these dogs have MULTIPLE pending applications but they don't seem to be in a rush to get them into a home. We understand that it's about finding the best home for each pet, but it's a little discouraging applying for a dog that already has 3 pending applications. Hard to believe not one of these families are qualified. I hope the facility can approve upon these things and give these dogs into the homes they deserve.

While the pup was not the dog we were looking for, the staff at the shelter made the experience a positive one, under the most distressing circumstances. Here's what's good about the shelter: 1. When most shelters don't pick up the phone or require you to leave a message and call you back, sometimes hours later, not only did BAS pick up the phone to talk to the lost pup's (Rosie, the Mini Goldendoodle) mom, but they looked at her Instagram fotos to see if the found pup might be a match. The BAS staff talked a lot among themselves to share thoughts and ultimately suggested that Rosie's mom come in to see the found pup. 2. When we arrived at BAS, the staff could not have been nicer. They handled our team of 3 women's emotions with great empathy, knowing that we were either going to experience a miracle or another distressing loss, if the found pup wasn't a match. 3. While the found pup was not a match for our missing Rosie, the staff gave us ample time to really be certain. They were kind and patient. 4. As you can imagine, we've been to a number of shelters in search of Rosie. What was remarkable about BAS was the following: -While many shelters wreak of urine or "animal scent" - we noted immediately, that bad odors were not present. The place is clean and organized. - We also noticed that the room that we went into with about 10 dogs, was quiet. There are no dogs incessantly barking or crying and whining. The volume of noise is so loud at some shelters that you can't even have a conversation - because especially the dogs are barking non-stop. It was actually quite stunning. The dogs seemed content and not agitated. - Each pup had their own clean bedding and did not have to sleep or lay down on a hard metal floor. The pup we saw even had a dog bed in her crate. It's a lot of work to keep that bedding clean, as you can imagine. 5. When we left, we could see the team anxiously awaiting our decision about a match. And while it was not, the young woman who took us back to the kennels was optimistic and shared her hopes that Rosie would be found. It was uplifting to hear, given we were all on the verge of tears having been disappointed again. I just had to leave a review given the positive vibe BAS has all around, from the observable care of the animals, the cleanliness of the facility and the well trained and good mannered staff - they made a tough situation a lot less hard. Thank you to the BAS staff!
